Police will get computers in their cars soon, they'll be able to keep up to date with Kiwi Biker while they're on the road.
Anyone know when they'll fit them to the bikes?

Quote: They will then be rolled out progressively to as many vehicles as justify the investment, she says.
To be an investment one has to expect a return. Let's hope they don't mean that this crime fighting tool will be used to issued tickets faster.

Thats a great move. It will free up a lot of radio traffic, which will enhance safety and allow for crime fighting initiatives to be conducted move covertly, rather than broadcasting details for all to hear.

Give the bike patrols these oqo's with a 3G wireless card and voice recongition software. Could help cut down the paper work / office visits as well with a few well written apps.

That and RFID tags , just think , you could do the an entire motorcycle shop inventory and stock take in a few hours. People and poor process create paper work , most people don't clearly spec or understand what their requirements are so put manual systems around the computer systems as well.
Put it this way , say your going to have a customer function for a few hundred to promote your latest product lunch and want to encourage a few new ones.
Do you
A, go through your filofax and get peoples numbers and start dialing a few hunderd customers and miss the ones that you haven't recorded.
(Days of work)
b, go through each individaul customer record on your database , write that down on some paper , and call and email each one
Days of work)
C, Click on customer notifcation app , mass email those customers that do have email , and give you a list of numbers for people that don't.
(Hours of work)
D, none of the above , Just put one post on Kiwibiker.

Big advantage for me is that scanners won't be quite the useful tool to crims they are at the moment (Like SC says).

Fucken brilliant idea for the police, this will make them a lot more productive in their job of giving out infringement tickets and harrassing people.
On the other hand, this is brilliant for people wanting to avoid police.
They'll have more electronic equipment emitting unique frequencies making it a lot more easier to develop detection equipment to indetify police vehicles on the road.

So they're gonna give them laptops and a secure website? (I didn't bother reading the article) Seems like something that coulda been done ages ago. They'll only find an excuse to can it anyway and increase the workload for those that do have 'em. I wonder if the lads will be able to do their paperwork while out and about instead of having to trundle back and forth to the stationhouse?

No I think the emphasis is freeing up the Communications operators from doing the mundane tasks such as QP's and QVR's (checking up on people and vehicles).
Quite often police have to wait a fair duration to get a response and the whole process can be delayed if your working in South Auckland when your passing over the name of an Islander. Takes foreverrrrrr.

They'll still need radio to coordinate chases. So those who rely on the scanners will be OK. They may get hit if they move to secure digital radio but. Biff knows something about this, but he's not talking. I have a nice big pair of balcksmiths tongs if anyone wants to persuade him.

Just need a laser quided missile ready to launch from the front of the car and a big "FIRE" button then there would be no need for typing. ;)

Given that there are only 25 or so bikes in the country, I'm picking they will put it in the too hard basket initially so it could be a while. Who knows, they (i.e the IT chiefs) might surprise me but it would be very handy. The upside to not having it is the AVL (automatic vehicle locator) wont be installed either so Comms cant see me moving around like they will be able to with the cars.

That's if you get the correct name. There are so many 'internationals', not just islanders (eg. chinese) that have their given name and an english name. Consequently they can get a liscence under two different names (with a passport etc)
My wife works for AA and had exactly that situation on Friday. A Chinese man came in and wanted to renew his p endorsement, because of a disqualification he was told he could not. So he leaves. A little while later he comes back goes to a different teller and starts getting processed. My missus notices him and goes to check what the story is (she gets a lot of shitty people) He has a passport with his name in it and an english name and he's getting his other lisence updated! Sucker, my wife got his passport and canceeled that lisence too!
The point is that computers are still just tools (good tools though). I just hope that politicians won't see them as being a solution to all our policing woes.

The only real advantage of computers in patrol cars is that they will free up heaps of radio traffic by cops being able to run checks on vehicle registrations and drivers licences without calling comms. Depending on the type of system they go with they could also be utilised for covert communications, which would be a huge advantage when executing search warrants etc.

I wasn't talking about car chases, I was talking about anti crime measures. However the computers will apparently utilise GPS as well, which will assist comms in directing patrols to intercept fleeing vehicles etc. They will still need to broadcast details over the radio though.

I'm here - just got back from there. Playing catchup at the mo'.
What was the question?
Using radio for data transmissions? Well the cops current system is capable of carrying small amounts of data, but the article talks of them using CDMA, a public bearer. The same one you, the public, can download small video clips from now, and send photos of your rude bits to your missis. Telecom users only. Vodaphone uses GSM/GPRS>3G.
But there is a project underway to buy a new digital network, probably based on the P25 standard. Nice n secure. While having a better data throughput than the cops existing analogue radios - P25 will still be narrow band (offering about 8K gross). So no ordering donuts via the Tinternet just yet. So they'll have to continue using another data bearer for efficient access to the the internet and other bandwidth thirsty happylications. GPS/AVLS, basic data base enquires (such as SQL, WAPLite thingies), small images etc.
Want to disarm their data capability? Easy - everyone send a text message from central Auckland at midnight on new years eve. Overload the public network, so no-bugger can get through.
Bored you yet?
I have a nice big pair of balcksmiths tongs if anyone wants to persuade him.

So should I sell my scanner on tyrademe then before its worthless???
Biff
28th February 2006, 20:10
Nah. There's plenty of life left in analogue scanners yet. Even when the police do eventually buy a digital radio system, unless they fork out even more money for decent encryption system, you can buy digital scanners that'll allow you to hear pretty much everything but the most sensitive operations (druggie busters etc). I'll even sell you one. I'll charge a fortune for it as well. Or you could Google and buy a half decent one from the states, and save a truck load of money to boot.
Chances are they'll out out any new radio system in the three major cities first anyhoo. And that's unlikely to begin happening for another 2 years +.

Part of me can understand why its a good thing, but the major chunk of me screams "bugger this!"
I spent alot of my teens/early 20's listening to cop scanners. Great entertainment they are. Makes it heaps easier to go rubbernecking at crime scenes, when your bored you just listen to the scanner and drive from crime to crime. When the cops pull you over (and when your a car full of gents in black jeans with shaved heads they do that an awful lot), you can sit and listen to them telling base they are on a traffic stop with suspicious person, and giggle hysterically over having soem stupid little thing over them.
Listening in to everything the cops are doing is a goddamn national past time, dont change it!

The fun thing is when you suspect there is a scanner in the car and you say something derogatory about one of the occupants on the air while you're back in the 'work' car - and then when you go back to speak to them that person can't resist complaining about what they heard being said about them - and all his mates start punching him and hissing "shutup ya dick, they'll know we have a scanner" or say "ha ha, he called you a..."
