I was told that the 10kph over the posted speed limit discretion applied in the NI - is not applied in the SI.

Sounds like bullshit to me??   What's the story SIers???

Cheers
Bill

Never heard that one before. Besides do cops have the ability to apply descretion?

My Bros-in-law are in Blenheim and that 10kph threshold is the one they calculate to...

My understanding is ( and I am sure that I will be corrected on this by one of our resident law enforcement guys) that the officers have the discretion up to 10kmh over the limit. That does not mean they will not ticket you for 105 in a 100 just that they dont have to. Once you are over the 10 kmh they do not have a choice but must issue a ticket.
I would imagine that they have the power to ticket you for travelling under the speed limit if that speed was considered excessive for the conditions i.e heavy fog .

Same rules apply down here, 10kph max tolerance, except for schools, which it drops to a 5kph tolerance.

A week or two ago they went on a huge clamp-down, spent the entire week trawling the city pinging everyone who was speeding or didn't signal whilst exiting a major roundabout.

they don't even have the equipment to apply discretion

Last time down south, we were warned that the West Coast cops were writing up anything over 5 k's. Apparently the ticket numbers were down.
This was from an impeccable source.

and foggy conditions wouldn't be for speeding - more likely carelss/dangerous

It's best to be behaving yourself over this way, theres heaps of em and they are ruthless.
They have regular backup from the visiting fuzz from the Nelson district as well so there is never a shortage.

Don't go to the police stations for any matter whatsoever tho as they are now unmanned outside of business hours due to staff shortages :tugger:

Aha so that's why this happened ...

My mate was followed down Lineside Rd by a mufti cop, into Rangiora and through the roundabout when the cop then pulled him over and congratulated him for indicating through the roundabout, and gave him a ticket for 111kph. Apparently he had reached 111kph as he passed a car, so the cop followed him all the way down Lineside Rd in case the opportuniy arose to get him for something else too.

This was about 2-3 weeks ago.

A fair nicks a fair nick, but that's a waste of time, time he could've used to do something useful.

I have to disagree with that, from my (many) experiences with the police they have been pretty reasonable folks and have often been willing to exercise discretion provided they are treated with a little respect and they know that you know you've been a bad boy.

Try it sometime.

Of course if the copper happens to be a complete wanker as well (common, or garden, complete wankers can be found anywhere you know), well thats just bad luck.

There has been a lot of talk about zero tolerance on Otago roads but it seems to go in bursts. My kids have been casualties of it. (101kph) :pinch:

Maybe Scumdog could shed a little light on it. if he's able to. Is that official policy in Otago SD? :blip: Cheers, John.

It must be getting tough for the poor old Higway patrol , I travel a lot in my job and have noticed that speeds have reduced and its rare that anyone travels much over 105kmh in cages now. I have gone from Napier to Rotorua , to Tolaga Bay and Back to Napier in one day travelling around 105kmh and not held anyone up and only had one car overtake.

They have to ping you overtaking or gaining a bit of speed down a steep hill now to meet targets I guess.

I would be happy to see a blitz on Texting and Driving , thats scary !

No way, you are fucking kidding me. 101kph?? Was that the only offence? There would be no way I would stand for that.
