I've been riding for a while now (about 3 years). Started on an Aprilia RS125 and have been on an '05 ZX6R since October last year.
Problem is, every time I do long distance rides on these bikes, it screws my shoulder up something fearful. Went from Auckland to the Awakino and back (about a 5 hour round trip) a couple of weekends ago, and by the time I got to Auckland I was in agony, and could hardly move my damn neck without it feeling like someone was stabbing me in my right shoulder (I checked, and I don't carry a mystery pillion with a knife ;) ). It's still giving me grief now, a week and a half later!
Has anyone else had these problems? Am I destined to trade in the sports bike for something a bit more comfy? Will the world keep turing if I'm not riding a bright red bike wearing bright red and orange leather looking like the fifth power ranger? Have I put too many questions at the end of this post?

It sounds like an OOS problem, have you been to a physio or occupational therapist?

I think we all have some discomforts at times, especially as we "mature"
But just by what you are saying there, I would get it checked out. Maybe it is your back that is out. See a chiropractor perhaps. Persevere.
But don't give up the bike:Oi:

I've found a tankbag to lean on helps, take the weight off my arms. But I am never in agony (Cept for my clutch hand) so you have it bad...

Sounds like a visit to a chiropractor or an osteopath is in order. You probably have a vertabrae out somewhere, pinching a nerve and is aggravated by sprotsbike seating position.

Welcome to my world mate, I get radically sore shoulders, almost like a Stabbing pain in my shoulder blade fucken hurts,as well as sore wrists and legs, I love the 636 but these machnes and other 600 super sports bikes are only built for the track, Im over it and moving onto a more relaxed position, and that again is a challenge when youre used to a sports machine.
i chose the ZXR1400 as the next bike for me, more relaxed but not loosing that sports bike feel and look.
Good Luck mate

I would gues it's probably your back muscles at the base of your neck, and that it's from holding your head up with the weight of your head / helmet etc. ratehr than olding your body up.
This is a pretty unusual thing to get your body to do (having a heavier head than designed). I'd suggest doing some exercises to stretch / build stamina in the muscles at the back of your neck, with your helmet on (might want to find somewhere out of public view).
Would get better if you go faster though as the blast should hold you up.

Yup I've experienced it. So I stopped riding sports bikes.

Cheers guys for all the helpful (and not so helpful) comments.
Think I'll try the doc first, maybe progress on to hippie tree-hugger natural therapies if that doesn't work, and as a last resort go for the old virgin-sacrifice-to-the-biker-gods trick. Anyone know any virgins...?
Incidentally, I don't seem to have any problems when I'm at the track. Short bursts of speed, coupled with the extra wind holding up my head might have something to do with it. Now if only I could replicate those speeds on the road... "Yess officer, I was doing 250 km/hr, but I have a note from my doctor saying I have to ride that quick or I risk damaging my shoulder"

I used to have a problem with my shoulder on the bike, but not to the extent you do. I found it was because I was holding the throttle too tightly and also because I'd spend periods resting on my left elbow on the tank, causing me to sit crooked. Using my legs to hold me up and relaxing my grip and arms in general cured it

Where about is the pain exactly?... Anterior deltoid, middle deltoid, posterior deltoid? Upper trapezius? Supraspinatus? I could advise some exercises that would isolate and strengthen them if you give me a little more detail......

Will give that a go, thanks.
Fishslayer, the pain is in the shouldery bit, below the necky bit, but above the backy bit, sorta near the army bit. I'll ask teh physio tomorrow to narrow it down for me :msn-wink:

I used to have a problem with my shoulder on the bike,
Had that same problem but soon realized i broke the fucker. I take it the hint should have been that the helmut fell off as I got up. my first thought was I swear these motox helmets has a chin guard!
to the original question. When i broke my collorbone it took about 2 years before it could take presure again. (The bone is not realy attached to anything). It took alot of "shoulder" type exercise ie anything that execises the neck actualy exercises the muscles from the shoulder bone to your neck. Go to you local gym ask around they will be able to piont you in shoulder muscle exercise that might help. The other sad part is that you might just be getting old.

I would suggest seeing a sports doctor or an Osteopath for your problem mate. Ask them for some excercises to do to strengthen the area, if they can't then get the details of the muscles involved and I will help you out. :apumpin:

EZAS and i did about 700k on saturday and i think the thing i complained about the most was an incredibaly sore arse! That and some sort of giant insects which insisted on trying to take my head off the whole way back from tauranga:mad:
I did used to get sore arms and wrists when i first started riding but the problem was solved when i relised i was freaking out the whole time and clenching all my muscles once i relaxed things were sweet:banana:

Take up yoga. Do some proper stretching. That should harden you up in no time.

I'm not opposed to anything involving two birds and one bone :innocent:
Let's just hope it's not that I'm getting old... being only 25 and all.
I hear the GSXR 'thou K6 is actually a pretty comfy bike to ride? Might have to take one for a nice long test ride and see for myself.
