Went and breezed through my full bike licencethismorning, after being lazy for too many years. The only thing that i gotblack marked for was road posistion. I was riding on the right hand side of my lane, aka in right hand wheel tracks of cars. This dick failed me on that saying i was mad, told me, and I quote... "I want you to keep right left, hug the footpath when you can".

Now i disagree with this... Read the motorcycle road code, it tells you i was doing it right!

I will atach a diagram, mirroring the one he drew to tell me where i should sit.

But my major beef here is... isnt he suposed to test me on what the roadcode says, not what he thinks?

Feel safer in the right tyre groove personally, ya can see what is coming better & of course thats the side to pass all those cages on too.

I nearly passed my restricted test coz the prick thought I was going too slow. Well sorry buddy, but if you want me to go & borrow a 250 for your stoopid test, dont expect me to be familiar with it.

I had never heard anything bout this ride on the left caper, i bought our rodecode not a month back for the missis to use to study up before he restricted, it still says "right hand wheel tracks"

I got the same thing o9n my full 3 or 4 weeks ago. Open road riding, I'd take a line into bends that meant I was over nearer to the oncoming traffic.

I was told not to do it in case an oncoming car had a blowout and crossed into my lane.

Seemed dumb to me, but since I had passed, I just took my licence and smiled nicely. It isn't going to change how I ride, though.

Congratulations on passing your test... well done.

Ok maybe it is worth contacting their office and ask to speak to the general manager of that branch and ask him/her where a m/bike rider should be... then when he quotes you from the road code....

Then tell him what the testing instructor told you...
But only tell him AFTER the GM has given you the correct info.

That way he will find out what his employers are doing.

I absolutely cruzed through my full a few months back... I spent most of my time on the right hand wheel line, but I did cut around my lane a fair bit as well (situation dependant). The instructor said my riding was faultless, but did complain about my speed... or lack there of... I was doing about 46 in the begining

Congrats froggy!! Woo hoo no size limit for the frenchman now eh?

I'm a right rider too and I would have politely done my chips if a testing officer had said that to me! Granted I just recently got my L's currently but I've been riding for some 23 years total and about 18 on the road (yeah I know stupid stupid man no licence!).

Arent these testers supposed to be riders too? I wonder if that moron had met any car doors or pedestrians in his left side riding?

Try riding through Wellywood on the left and you'd be collected real fast, not to mention have a cage beside you.

Lou Girardin
21st March 2006, 08:18
I hope you don't leave it at that. Contact LTNZ and ask them to have the tester corrected or others may actually be failed.

You should raise the matter with the appropriate authorities. This belief is not uncommon amongst the uneducated, but I would not have expected it from one who should know better.

It is an exceeding dangerous one, I personally knew two people who died as a direct result of it - one rode into the back of an unlit parked truck, one was knocked off by an opening car door, and went under the wheels of a car.

The Road code is quite clear on the matter, and devotes a number of pages to it.

Jantar
21st March 2006, 09:41
The tester was correct and the road code is wrong.

Believe it or not, one of the rule changes that came into force at the same time as the round-about law was a requirement to keep as far left in your lane as practical with a fine (I can't remember how much) and 20 demerit points for failing to do so. The stupid rule makers did not make any allowance for motorcyclists.

So now if you ride safely you are theoretically breaking the law. I for one will continue to break the law in this regard and ride in the same position on the road as if I were driving a car, ie where a car driver can see me in his rear view mirror.

Hey congrats Froggy - and well done spotting the last test the government put in the new licencing scheme... patience!

WHAT AN IDIOTIC RULE.

Stay left at all time... so you minimise your chances of seeing and avoiding obstacles... AND you minimise the chances of anyone seeing you!

Yeah - like that works...

I can't believe this. Do these testers have to pass an exam in stupidity? Take it further mate. And if I/we can help just let us know.

Patrick
21st March 2006, 09:54
The tester is being pedantic...he may be right but surely logic should kick in.

Car drivers say they can't see us when we are in the middle to right hand side of the lane... how the hell will they see us if we are "supposed" to be on the left side?

Supposed to be all about safety, isn't it? Raise it with his boss. The road code is what we all use and study and it says "right wheel track" (for optimum vis for the rider and for optimum likelihood of being seen by others too... or so I thought, as it seemed so obvious...).

Congrats too by the way.. only 6 weeks before I go for full...and then get a bigger bike!

Also if you keep well left car drivers can't resist trying to pass, which can also be very dangerous. I've lost count of the number of scooter drivers that I've seen boxed into a bad situation with a parked car or other hazard because they were riding 1 metre from the kerb. I keep wanting to pull them over and tell them to not give a rats &^%#$ about taking up the lane......

was a requirement to keep as far left in your lane as practical

Practicable being the operative word. It could easily be argued that riding so close to left presents a greater danger to the rider.

A bit like exceeding the speed limit when overtaking really, isn't it?

"As practical" is the operative phrase.

Even in a cage, one would not dodge in and out of parked cars so as to keep as close to the gutter as physically possible.

However, I do remember someone (I think it was that guy that was on here for a while) taking the LTSA on about it at the time, and the LTSA declaring that it was not intended to apply to motorcycles.

May be an opportunity to remind them of their words.

I wonder what they'd do if a trials type rider turned up and DID ride all the time in the gutter?

NONE of my speeding tickets issued are for overtaking... May be in a passing lane, but not overtaking anything, they usually did that kms ago and forgot to slow down past the schools...

I think we'd all agree that CAGES keeping as far left "as practical" would be a really good idea (provided they're not weaving in and out erratically).

Speights_Bud called the LTSA or what ever they are called now.:mega: They told him there has not been a law change.
They are advising that people drive to the left of the lane. So that is why you did not get failed Froggy.

Speights_Bud is out cleaning his bike for his test tomorrow. Good luck Speight_Bud. Get rid of the L plate and up to 100Kmh is free from here on in.

He was pretty old.

A greater concern would be riding a line round, say, a left-hander where you're setting yourself up to go into the corner by moving over to the right, and meeting some bull-barred twat coming the other way who can't resist crossing the centre line as they take the corner.

Cabbit
23rd March 2006, 10:29
Well, I for one HATE the left side of the road, no matter who's driving/riding on it.
#1 It's dangerous, car doors, pedestrians stepping out, the occasional parent shoving their child out onto the road via the pram. etc etc.
#2 All the crap that builds up there. When people ride/drive on the left, i all gets thrown up at whoever's behind them. It's NOT COOL. D=

So, bugger their rules. it's mid/right side of the land for me, unless some 'tard decides to pass someone by going straight through me, then i might move, after making sure they know my displeasure, of course.
