Okay, this is me being serious for once.:pinch:
Having just got back into bikes after a 13 year absense, I'm freaken lovin it. My last bike was a GPZ250 so it was quite a jump to a litre bike. After reading all the reviews the CBR seemed to be the most forgiving so that's what I got. Add my dirt bike and the street magic and I'm turning into bike freak. But it doesn't stop there.
Because of the traffic, I've decided to sell my pride and joy car and get a street bike to travel to work. This is a big decision for me cause I've always been a car nut and I'm really attached to it. However, I only use it to go to and from work and on the weekend I'd rather ride than drive. I've still got an SUV that the misses uses so we'll still have a vehicle.
I normally wear a suit so I'm getting a wardrobe at work so I'll get changed there. Sorted.
Now I've looked at the BMW 1200R and KTM Super Duke but I keep coming back to the MV Agusta Brutale. There's an R version coming into the country shortly so I might get this.
Big step! Whatta yah reckon?

Ditto, Im starting to get hooked too, and my ex-pride and joy mega pony cage is fading in appeal. Sorry, I have no opinion on which is the best daily rider... but I had to agree how its easy to get hooked!

An embarrasing 3.6 k's but from one side of the city to the other. 20+ traffic lights and queues everywhere. Sometimes it takes me 40 mins but only 10 on the bike.

Sweet dude, sounds like a motard is what ya need. Nice, skinny single cylinder (or Aprillia twin), easy to chuck around, cheap to crash...Mike at Mt Eden is pretty in to them and I'm sure he'll have a few to sell to ya...

Supeduke is a pretty horn bike Finn!! I wouldn't look past it!!
Good on you for that call! I have done the same, had it forced on me by my Honda cage blowing a head gasket! And they call subarus unreliable!! Two honda motors melted down on me! NSR not too surprising, but a legend??
Anyway, good on mr suzuki for making such horn bikes, and pulling me out of the cage!!
Good on anyone who is two wheeler, (and sometimes one!!)
Go the superduke!! and move up north so you can enjoy the lane splitting all the way in to the city!!

First off: for having a full license AND the $ to make proper use of it, I would like to pronounce you an official bastard. Please don't take it badly.
Other than that I see a profile of a grey faced man on a Repsol blade. Ummm, why not bike into work on that? Brutale's have, ah, brutal depreciation problems. I know this because there appear to be a number of older 750 Brutale's around $20k and not much distance. They also have fuel consumption issues but that's a different question.
You *could* get something more restrained and commutery like an SV650s or ER6. But I don't see why you're not riding in on the blade...

It makes me really hate the fact that I have a company car. I called in at home one day last week just before I went back to the office at the end of the day, jumped on the bike so as I could have a wee fang after work. My boss looked at me carrying my helmet and I could tell he had me sussed for taking half the day off, wish the hell I had!!
Company cages suck, like a freakin home detention bracelet.

'WHAT IS IT? This is the ‘R’ (racing) version of the gorgeous MV Agusta 910 Brutale. The standard Massimo Tamburini-designed 910cc Brutale is already one of the most beautiful naked bikes ever and is essentially a stripped down, shorter-stroke version of the Italian firm’s iconic F4 1000 superbike. The R is just that bit more special, with more power and mouth-watering chassis goodies.'
'Chassis Heaven'
'Most sports bikes aren’t as raw, stiff and purposeful as the Brutale R. Even a ZX-10R or a G S X -R1000 feels soft and cuddly compared to this. Stiff suspension keeps it composed when entering corners, steering like a race bike and staying rock-solid on full lean.'
'Is it still a hoolgan?'
'Although our test bike didn’t have the race exhaust fitted, like the one Finn is getting, the motor still feels fresher and more urgent. The action of twisting the throttle seems to send signals to the Brutale’s electronic black box, telling the bike to assault you at every opportunity, wheelie like a lunatic, scream blue murder through the pipes and pull arms from sockets – just imagine what it must be like with the free-flowing exhaust!'
Nighty night poos.

Hey Finn,
99% of us can't afford the bikes we lust after, so it's common courtesy to provide a link to some porn and some dirty pictures so we can "satisfy" ourselves.:msn-wink:
http://www.mvagustausa.com/web-mvagusta/Brutale_910R.html
MV AGUSTA BRUTALE 910R
The Brutale 910R: Captivating style, a great temperament and engine technology par excellence. But also a fanatical eye to detail and sophisticated fittings. All these qualities have long been recognized in the both the 750 and 910 Brutale.
Now just try to imagine these properties boosted by improved performance, better braking and the dynamic handling characteristics of a full race machine. This would be the 910R. It is a motorcycle for everyday use but, under the right circumstances, capable of rewarding its rider with the behavior and riding sensation that are more in line with full race machines. The MV Agusta Brutale 910R derives from the S version and keeps the same elegant lines that are so much loved by the general public. There are however several modifications that make it even more dynamic and aggressive. As far as appearances go, the R version features changes relating to the frame and mechanicals in comparison to the base model S.
It must be said that this has great style value making the machine identifiable by means of various elements like the red rocker box cover, the black forged aluminum wheels and the Brembo brakes with their distinctive radial calipers and enlarged discs.

Finn for a regular communter i would think get a bike, that is cheap on maintiance and the like, the brutal is nice bike but wouldn't it better to have your nice bike as weekend ride. and just something around down, that you can have fun on, small bikes(400cc) or something super motad are good for this, (small. narrow) so get betweeen cars, easy to park, not total worried that something is gonna, knock if over, etc etc.
Cause if you do alot of communting on your bike, you are gonna have alot of close calls with cagers.

The exotics sound great, but for a commuter? Why not try a Superduke or Speed Triple? (the latter is a better town bike)
I'll bet that after you've had a naked bike for a while the CBR won't get used much.

Do it - seriously. I did that exact same thing 3 years ago and love it.
My one word of advice - don't get anything that'll depreciate to quickly. You WILL put miles on it as your daily commute... if you do the numbers it could be cheaper to buy a little rat bike for the daily commute and save the other for fun.
I've found the RF is a good crossover between the two, and being a cheap(er) bike the depreciation doesn't worry me too much. I'll hanging onto it till it dies... giving it CPR till it dies again... etc...
You get the idea.
Also - pack a spare pair of socks and daks a dn keep them at work. Nothin' worse than getting there wet, and staying that way all day (or having to go commando in suit pants...)

Thanks for the feeback guys. Given the dosh i've pissed down the drain on exotic cars, this excersize isn't about money. I've considered the supermotard and the KTM Super Duke but for raw, ass out fun I do dirt biking. It's not just going to be a commuter and as Lou says I may struggle getting on the CBR once I get a naked bike.
As for wheel stands, Two Wheels says it a wheelie demon.

just buy it. It will make you smile every day on the way to work. Who cares if it depreciates. If you want a bike that is slow to devalue buy a classic and never ride it. boring.
Buy the MV, thrash it daily. smile at the plebs in cars as you rip past.

My first thought was the Touno as well, (new model but, not the older one like on Trademe) they'd be a weapon in the traffic - the only prob I have with them is that butt ugly front fairing. Looking at the commute you are doing tho, anything like that or the brutale is bordering on sacreledge. I'd second the opinion of a super motard - perfect for 20 lights in 3.5ks. Then keep the
Money not withstanding (sounds like it isnt in your case) my weapon of choice would be this (http://www.aprilia.com/models03/offroad/eng/modello.phtml?id=98).
As a point of interest tho, that Brutale 910R looks the shizzle for open road blasting, how much does one of those go for?

Why anyone would want to keep changing gears on a city-only commute is a bit beyond me, but having made that decision I'd probably say go for summat non-descript and reliable like the stuff mbike couriers ride. One important point is that even though motard are skinny they have fat arse bars so it dont reall matter how skinny the bike is as the bars are the bit you have to sneak though shit.
Also the mirrors and bars on a motard are higher than say a NC30, this puts them up around mirror height on the majority of cars again a pain in the arse , see I can duck under alot of mirrors on JAFFA's land tanks with me bars.
oh I vote duke with a full evolution akrapovic system

And for this you're looking at 200kph+ bikes?
Get a 50cc scooter. Will be faster than any big bike through that lot , keep you dry, cost zip to run, no wof cheap rego.
Or, walk. I walk 3km every evening (well, most evenings). Takes 20 minutes. Or, a treadley. Should do it in 10 min max. AND you get to have fun mowing down pedestrians when you take to the footpaths.
Or, if you want the kicks of traffic light GP starts, get a looney 125 two smoker.

MV Agusta Brutale 910
With an all new 910cc engine, the MV Agusta Brutale 910 has 70.8 ft. lbs. of torque, and 136 horsepower! Visually, the 910 is similar to the 750 in terms of color schemes (except with the addition of the 910 logo on the tank), and a tachometer with a new numerical scale and Brutale Logo
The 909.1 cc engine follows the same characteristics as the 750EV, but features new updates that are similar to those on the F4 1000. The increase comes from the increase in bore and stroke (73.8mm to 76mm, and from 43.8mm to 50.1mm). Although there is an increase in capacity, there is no increase in engine size externally.
Brutale 910S Brutale 750S
Capacity 909.1cc 749.4cc
Compression Ratio 13:1 12:1
Bore and Stroke 76.0mm x 50.1mm 73.8mm x 43.8mm
Max Power 136 HP @ 11,000 rpm 127 HP @ 12,500 rpm
Max Torque 70.8 ft. lb. @ 7,900 rpm 57 ft. lb. @ 10,500 rpm
Primary Drive Ratio 50/79 47/81
Final Drive Ratio 15/43 14/41
Speed Ratio 16/34 14/31
Other additions (similar to the F4 1000S) are the adjustable footpegs, quick-release rear sprocket, and the 120/70 ZR 17 front tire. The frame is still the only four-cylinder production category to be made from chrome-molybdenum steel tubing. 50 mm Marzocchi Magnum hydraulic forks with rebound-compression in the front, and Sachs single shock absorber with rebound-compression damping and spring preload adjustment in the rear.
Two specially made six-piston (opposed) "Nissin F4" calipers for front breaking, and the Nissin F4 unit with a four-piston (opposed) caliper in the rear

Went to see Sarge at Colemans today (don't worry Lou, your turn is tomorrow) to pick up some info on the MV. Guys, I gotta say that the GSXR 1000 K6 in one sexy beast in the flesh. If that had been around when I was looking I probably would have got one. Okay the welding looks like it was done by a pre-schooler but it's pretty damn fine.

If we were sensible, we'd all have died of boredom by now......

For a moment I wondered if you was coming out of the closet. Dunno about everyone else but I reckon just get exactly what you want if you can afford it. I got the DRZ for the same sort of thing with the added bonus of riding offroad. Since you have that sorted and have the cash I reckon ride the lot and then decide exactly what it is that your after.;)
Man you're in a lucky place Finn. No matter what you pick - you win. Life's too short to drink the house wine so go top shelf. Either the MV or Superduke will make you smile every inch of the 3.6km commute. I've ridden the Duke and Speedtriple and I'd go for the Triple. Good point someone made about motards with wide bars. I thought my short spell with an America to ride to work was clever. Backfired for a commute - Bloody wide bars forced me to back off on half the lane splitting.
You're a suit too hey. Makes it hard to use the bike when you got to keep the 'work overalls' spick and span - have to pick my days to use the bike carefully.

What a poser! Apart from the criminal aspects of using such a nice bike for such a mundane chore, 3.6km for God's sake. A flash scooter would be more sensible (yeah yeah I know, when did good sense come in to a motorcycle decision), something like an Italjet Dragster. Superb style, plenty fast, CHICKS DIG THEM, and Italian.
What wanker needs a bike with "more power, oversized brakes, tight racebike handling, etc etc" just to ride 3.6km in heavy city traffic.

Look peasant, I'll explain it to you in simpleton terms. I no longer want to use a car to get to and from work. The traffic drives me crazy. I've always wanted a naked bike so here's my chance. I will also use this for rides when I feel like a different "ride" than the CBR.

i was delighted to read that the economics of choosing your bike didn't matter- you can please yourself-yay.
if it were me, i'd spend avery last dollar on a bike that oozed style-performance comparisons hardly matter when these choices are between the bikes you are looking at. please the eye i say- the bike that has nothing wasted in the design, beautiful components, no nasty plasticy bits... (i rekon the super duke has got some nasty plastic moments close up but looks great from a distance...took a ride on one last year). i think style esp important in a bike cause when we get off them we look like such hacks with all the gear...
good luck with the purchase & don't think for a minute that mosta these guys wouldn't love to be making this choice!

Sorted.

Courtesy of MCN Jan 2006
'WHAT IS IT? This is the ‘R’ (racing) version of the gorgeous MV Agusta 910 Brutale. The standard Massimo Tamburini-designed 910cc Brutale is already one of the most beautiful naked bikes ever and is essentially a stripped down, shorter-stroke version of the Italian firm’s iconic F4 1000 superbike. The R is just that bit more special, with more power and mouth-watering chassis goodies.'
Typical MCN crap. It is NOT a downstroked version of the 1000, it is a bored and stroked 750. the 1000 didn't fit in the Brutale frame.
I reckon you should go for the Brutale. Bloody good garage there Finn, and don't forget to post pictures.

I'm well pleased that it's a total prick of a job to choose! I thought, great, money no object, lets go wild on ol Finn. However, even with max dosh to drop, it's a pretty hard choice. Big ccs are a bit of a waste, and a big bike isn't the lane splitter needed for this mission. Scooters are well ghey, scratch them too. Hate to say it, still looking like a SuperMotard is still the way foward! Having said that, saw the 06 R6 and man is that tiny! Could definitely split hard out on that baby.

obviously your not a splitter of Auck traffic but the wide bars of a motard would be a downer alot of the time, could always pop in on to one wheel to fix this though

Just buy a cheap helicopter, one of those single seater things, such as the M500 or check out those two seater scorpion things you can buy from an Australia firm (Rotoway.com) they sell those for around $110,000. Probably the same price as any exotic type sports car.
Whats best, a few of those helicopters are classed as microlights, so you don't need to get a pilots license... persey.
 If you like, I can fly you to and from work
EDIT: $110,000 was the pricing I received about 6 months ago on request from their South Australia office. That was for the pre-assembled version, you can buy kitset versions for much cheaper. Prices are quoted on request.
Something to seriously think about, as there are a few buildings in Auckland that faciliate Helicopter pads, or alternatively you could possibly land at Mechanics bay and walk/taxi/motorcycle to work.
Nice way to spend the weekends too.

The only surfing I do is on my computer. Stick a motor on it and I might show some interest.

Finn, email me off line (I don't check KB much anymore) and I'll give you as much info as I can about the Brutale. I had mine for 18 months and did about 20,000k on it. Commuted every day and did a few big tours on it.
