You know what? I'm :puke: sick:puke: of the TAB adverts on Sky TV. The one with the little guy in the middle (on the yellow seat with "Super14" on it), surrounded by all the "big" guys around him (on yellow seats with "Super 14 with a bet on") at a rugby game.

I mean, there is NO way you could possibly enjoy watching sport or racing, unless you have a bet on it. And, if you don't have a bet on it, you're not "one of the guys". It's good that gambling isn't addictive (Tui...), otherwise it could ruin peoples lives! Also, even if it were, noone in NZ would get into that sort of stuff. I mean, it's too hard anyway:baby: , you would have to use your sky remote to run up a huge sky bill. Reaching for the remote is WAY too much effort (but that's ok, you don't have to pay it till the end of the month anyway, it'll be sweet...:killingme )

I think you raise a good point here Dave, and it's [pssibly one that could be raised in the Broadcasting Standards Tribunal.

You see, we have rules about alcohol advertising that you cannot glorify the drinking experience, and DB has certainly pushed the boundaries with the Export ads.

I'm not too sure about the rules regarding the adveritising of gambling products (more of a suit's problem than creative where I hang out) but you could put a case to the Broadcastings Standards Authority regarding glorification of betting...

Im certainly not averse to a bit of a punt, however Im not so keen on sports betting. The few times I did, I found myself hoping that X would score before Y, or that Z wouldnt score because that would ruin the split. Far from adding to the game, I found it detracted.

I guess David Kirk must've fluked that Rhodes Scholarship seeing as how rugby people have such low IQ's. pretty dumb move being CEO of Fairfax too!

Doesn't putting a bet on a game or result change your enjoyment of it? I would have thought that I'd like a return on placing a bet, so knowing what or who I've bet on would detract from the enjoyment of the game. I wouldn't give a f*ck about the game itself, just the result.

I wonder why we have to spend so much on taxes when the government is encouraging gambling so much? They are the same thing aren't they? Coz let's face it they wouldn't encourage it if there were more winners than losers.... Then it would just be called a benefit ...

I don't gamble but I can understand its attraction. I play virtual super14 and if I got maximum points one week I'd be devastated I didn't put a $10 multibet on it which would have netted me $53,000.

Gambling is just another form of entertainment as I see it. Some people waste money on alcohol, others on a horrifically overpriced dinner or some concert. As long as you treat gambling as entertainment and not an answer to your problems then its fine. Its the sheltered treehugging PC types that are brainwashed into thinking gambling is the path to destruction. Just like alcohol or driving there will always be a few lost causes but this is by no means an accurate representation of the greater whole.

If my mates wanted to fire up a game of cards to pass the time I'd have no problem resigning $20 to the cause. No different to seeing a movie or playing mini-golf or a round of beers as far as I'm concerned.

I am appalled at New Zealanders' attitudes to many things. Domestic violence, violence in general, violins in particular...

But gambling takes the bun. Pokey machines everywhere. Casinos (except Wellington, one thing our city council has got right). TAB via Sky decoders. It's ubiquitous.

But the thing that annoys me most is that legalised gambling generally takes money off those who can least afford to lose it. It is not a sign of being "grown-up", sophisticated or mature. The gambling genie is too far out of the bottle. I will be interested to see whether our elected leaders have the guts to try and push some of it back in.

An no I don't gamble and actualy don't understand people that do to the extent it becomes a problem.
More so because in a previous life I collected gambling debts, an the mugs were always total loser/worms that would sell their kids to fund their habits.
If it's legal to push that shit on NZ TV then it should also be legal to push P.
It has a similar end result for a lot of people.
Just the wrong people making the money with P I guess.
