Unfortunately I haven't managed to get to a track day yet, and sort of regret not doing it on my old 600 before selling it. I'm looking at trying a different bike on for size in the very near future, ie. a sports tourer or naked or similar, and am unsure about track day protocol....

Are track days limited to supersports bikes only? Can I rock up on a bandit / z750 / monster etc and safely participate? [smilie=1,32,19]

Any bike (in safe condition) is OK. Trackdays are about having fun & trying things out that you wouldn't do on the roads, and to discover/increase your handling skills.

Harleys on a track, go for it, personally i'd love a screaming eagle V rod, and with that neat wee supercharger kit bolted on :shifty: for a day on the track, reckon it'd be a blast, dont hassle the harley people :Punk:
Any bike you can get your hands on can go to the track, check out Frosty's thread and come along, good day, espeshly if it's your first track day.

I'ma gunna be there on the KTM. As long as it'll pass scrutineering you're good to go is the usual policy.

Cheers

This might be a dumn question but are you allowed out on the track at open days with kevlar jeans or do you have to be in full leathers?

Yeah, I had to bribe them heavily and got White Thrash to give one of the clerks a lapdance.

I saw a husband and wife (I presume) at a trackday with his and hers sportsters and matching shoei XR1000s  . At the same day I saw a Harley get denied by scrutineering because of his tassled saddle bags  He said it was too hard to remove them and stormed off in a huff. So run what ya brung, but leave the hard luggage at home. Then get addicted to it and buy a gixxer so you can own the racetrack.

GSXR ROCK!!! Go for gold, I took my piece of crap ZZR 250 monster, and they let me loose!! All depends on who runs the trackday as to how stringent the rules are, but just give it a go... WARNING can be addictive, and force you to embrace debt to go racing.... don't say no one ever told you... Ah, don't wait, buy the GSXR now!!

It TOTALLY depends who's running the track day.
One extreme would be a pukie open track day -Note i said OPEN not run by amcc or a bike only
On one of them ya rock up pay ya money and its up to you what you wear.
The oposite extreme (not blowing my own trumpet ) would be a KB track day.
I expect your bike to be able to pass a WOF and have mirrors taped and glass headlights taped as a minimum.
Gear wise Its full face lid in good nick full leathers or two piece cudura -or a mixture of both. Motorcycle boots and leather gloves.
I reccomend that ya gear is joined at the waist -even if its by duct tape.

Interesting...
Ruapuna Trackday (org by Sportszone in this case)
Only leathers (2 piece, 1 piece, over shoulder trou allowed): definately NO cordura. Helmets within racing standards for age, wear etc.
All bike to be wired/taped up, mirrors removed etc. and up to racing standard.

personally i think it is good to have higher standards...better and safer for everyone who is out there.

Saw a guy with a small child on the back of his bike at manfield about a year ago on a track day.One of the guys i was with went and told the organisers about it but they did,nt seem to concerned.Might have been a different story if he came of and the kid was badly hurt or worse.Dont know who was running it but it was,nt the brightest thing iv,e seen.

Pretty sure they don't allow ball gags and having your bare arse hanging out of leather leggings is a definite no no so you're going to have to wear something else at Taupo mate.

I agree with that, higher standards are better. But within reason. That Sportzone day sounds like it's aimed mainly at racers where as the ones Frosty runs are aimed squarely at road riders. The track day I went to at Manfield was kind lax if you ask me. Personally, I wouldn't have let some of those that were there out on the track.

The ones at Ruapuna tend to be aimed at both really, thats why there are a few different classes, with different 'rules' for each. Last weekends one even had a clubmans level, for the racers who wanted a real blat...and also the real beginners level for the 150s, and buckets.:niceone:
At least they do require a certain level of protective clothing....cordura altho not the best for skin protection (compared to leather) is at least a whole lot better than what I see a lot of people wearing on the road....singlets, jandels and all. :pinch:

sigh...just wish there were MORE track days down here

I got rejected from an ordinary Puke open day when I was a boy because I was wearing a leather jacket and jeans. You can ride like a hooligan all over the country in a speedo and a helmet but get on a nice safe racetrack with no oncoming traffic and nobody to pull out in front of you and you have to get kitted up like a power ranger. Same goes for the kid on the back with his dad - he's a hell of a lot safer in the slow group on the track than on any public road. [/rant off]
