Does anyone know of any bike suspension specialists in Auckland?

I have set mine up through trial and error, and have got it feeling a lot better than how it was when I bought it but am interested in knowing what a professional would recommend.

I heard that there is a guy who operates from home in Pokeno and is supposed to be quite good, does anyone know who he is or contact details?

Cheers

there's a few around.
I'm looking into it myself. I'm going to have a go and see what I can do, but I'm keeping the specialists in the back of my mind. You've got Ray Clee in Henderson (I think), Shaun Harris (New Plymouth?), Robert Taylor (Taranaki), that dude in Cycletreads on the shore.. there's a few.. ;)

If you've got it fairly well off to you (and remember, you're riding the bike, not these guys, but another opinion never hurts), the next step is the big bucks for things like new rear shock and fork internals..

Does Ray Clee run a shop out there?

Anyone got the number? Website?

Norm Cobb is my guru at suspension Tech in Ellerslie. Rebuilds my shocks and consults. Good bloke and sets up some top race teams on and off road.

Robert Taylor is Kiwi Rider's man at Hawera Motorcycles.

Hey Dave do you have contact details for Norm? I heard he is the MAN when it comes to suspension. He was the one that taught Matt at Mt Edens everything he knows about suspension.

Been told recently by a few guys that Norm is the man.

He also set up a guy I know's R1 which handles like its on rails compared to my bucking bronco.

True...might go and see him then...Henderson is a bit far out in the whops from me, even if the name is famous.

You having trouble with yours? You got factory gear?.

I am setting up my sag properly tomorrow after work then gonna play with the compression and rebound on Saturday. Got some good advice from Matt at Mt Edens. Very helpful, knowledgable guy (he was taught by Norm).

Not so much trouble, just want to get the most out of it. All factory stuff.

Although, if the price is right, I think I'll get Ohlins or some sort of replacement springs for the front. It's a bit soft right now.

Would love an Ohlins rear...but gotta get rid of student debt before I can justify that.

So to reserect an old Thread, nobody can say I dont use the search function.

Seems these Suspension Tech International Ltd fullas seem to be pretty good. Anyone that posted early in this thread end up using them? or has anybody else used them? Would love to go down and see Shaun Harris but really dont have the time for the trip down so looking for someone that knows a thing or two about suspension a bit closer to home.

And Shaun comes to Auckland every now and then to do set ups, but he is too noble to say so when he can put someone else up first, you could always PM him to see if that works for you both.
Or you could take his advice and go see Norm.

This thread is old as.

Since I started this thread I sorted my suspension on the CBR1000RR all by myself by smashing it into a clay bank. :niceone:

Then I bought the K6 Gixxer 1000 which I had Shaun Harris setup the suspension for me, which was damn good!. Shaun did a fantastic job at transforming my marshmallow ride into a line holding confidence inspiring bike. If anyone has suspension issues I highly recommend getting in contact with him to get your ride sorted, I know he will be getting all future suspension work from me when I get another one.

Gotta admit I'm keen to get the front of the RF looked at (and the rear too I guess...).

What sort of outlay are we talking about there? No KB discounts expected. Happy to pay good money for a good job

Thanks for plugs guy's:rockon:

There are expert technicians and part fitters, and then there are technicians parts fitters that actually ride bikes!

I am lucky with my understanding of suspension and bikes as it has been a big part of my life ( 21 years now) I have always strived to get the best handling bike possible for me.

Since moving back to New Zealand 12 years ago, I have had a very healthy relationship with Robert Taylor of Ohlin's NZ, ( That man is possesed with suspension) together we have learned a lot about what suspension needs.

The reallity is most bikes that hit our shores are to soft in the spring dept ( Main Problem) Just springs and oil weight can make a huge differece to a bike) I won 2 Isle of man races using different springs and oil in the forks only!

I am not here to bag anyone else who offers this service, I am just trying to explain how important it is that the person who is doing these mods actually know's what the bike is doing that you do not like.

For full on rebuild work, I send this to Robert at Ohlins NZ, my speciallity really
is understanding the riders feed back as well as being able to safely ride your bike fast enough to fully understand your feed back on the problems you are having.

So, If you want a set up done by some one like the above description, get on the phone, then get on your bike and come for a dam good ride, or go and see NOrm Cobb in Ellerslie, he is good.

Norm Cobb has been doing my MX bikes for about 7 years now and knows dirt bikes inside/outside and backwards.

However, he is not a road bike rider, from my perspective, Norm does an absolutly fantastic job on my MX bikes, but I will be seeking the services of Robert Taylor (if you ask Robert about MX he will send you to Norm, haha) when it comes to setting up my new Track bike. Possibly Shaun as well as he may be a bit more accessible to me

Do you mean Gaudenz Gisler in Tuakau?
Yes, he's Swiss national champ many times over, raced in International MX GP's and very much a suspension expert

Norm did the suspension on Tony Rees' bike for his last NZ Championship. Can't be too bad with the tarmac stuff.

Exactually, but it was still up to Tony to dial in all the sags and the comp and rebound settings so he liked they way the internall mods work

Thanks guys.

I agree with you Archer from the little bit of reserch I did in regard to Norm (google is a wonderfull tool) and itdid seam he was prety dirt focused as far as his expertise goes, not saying he hasent done road stuff though.

Im not the fastest rider out there, those that have ridin with me could probally call me nana :whocares: but I just feel like the bikes not handleing bad but it could handle better by just taling and working with someone that knows what they are doing, cause although I do undertand the very basic principals all the nobs and tuneing is a bit intitimidating.

Looks like I may have to try and fit a trip to the Naki in somewhere along the line

Fair point.

I had my forks done by him. Didn't get along with it until it was set up by you.

Proves (not that it was needed) that just having good suspension parts doesn't mean shit. It needs to be set up right for what it's going to be dealing with.
