View Full Version : My wee (literally) project :)

Right,
I've had this wee minibike with its Briggs 'n stratton lawnmower engine for over 2 years now. Before(pic#1) (pic#2)

Last year i stripped it down and had it powdercoated satin black (for free :D) After (pic#3)
Bought a new engine too, and new cables to the accelerator etc

And i bought a turbo and stripped the exhaust side of that off and im going to mount a cog on the clutch of the engine and shaft of the turbo :) With the idea being to build a pressure wave supercharger.
But getting enough rpm's for the turbo to make boost could be difficult.

Later on i proved that wrong and discovered i were making quite a bit of airflow just on idle (800rpms). hehe. winnaaarr!

Now on to the difficult part, it always seam that once you pull something apart it never goes back to fucking gether properly -_-
That and i cant find any cogs that i need nor do i know of any engineers that can make me a bracket to hold the turbo to the engine and have it close enough to match teef with the cogs.
I also need a completely new throttle grip as the adjustment thingy doesnt thread up into the plastic grip anymore..

Can anyone help? I need a good engineer (cheap too :S) and a place that sells cogs or gears whichever. When this gets up n runnin it'll be a great but slow bucket racer :D:lol:

oh im in chch too, so a local engineer would be good ;D

I thought your wee project was going to be some kind of school science project.

Will the turbo hurt your little engine? (I dunno make it too hot or summat?)

.produKt

Love the sarcasm.....

Well i dunno Colapop, when it melts i'll just say meh and find me a 10hp honda twin engine :D

How did you score free powdercoating? reckon they'll do my house for that price? the heat bit might be hard, but the rest should be a doddle!!
BTW, no sarcasm intended, there is nothing that beats making toys, eg the classic motorised barstool. It it exists, and isn't alive, someone should put a motor in it!!

Well I say hats off to pioneers such as you! If people didn't try things to see if they worked we wouldn't be able to laugh hysterically later...

Seriously tho' looks like a bit of fun. I know a guy with a full workshop I should buy some steel and see what I can make as my bike!

haha. wicked.

thats a huge turbo for a 3hp engine

I scored the free powder coat from a flatmate that was living here at the time :) Cheers Stu =) Hope your toes and broken arm never heal after you wrote your harley off. Serves ya right for going nuts then going for a ride while 7 times over the limit O_o.

Lazy7: The turbo size probably doesnt matter, it will never utilize its full potential anyway :)

And even if it doesnt work, the cool factor is allllll there :D:D

Interesting you say that. You understand lag right?

Lag?? Like, do the crime do the time?

Oh and check out this site..

I know, but I was replying to his comment.

Not in the context of the situation, you weren't :shake:

aaaaaanyway. Make it work, now. I want to know what happens.

Well your not the only one!

If you havent seen Monster garage, thier vortex supercharger did 7 psi just from the engine and the charged air went into
a aluminium box that surrounded the whole carbie. Wonder if im gonna have to do that?.

And yussss Sniper I completely comprehend lag, after all, i used to own a Subaru Legacy turbo and oh god was that laggy >_<.

Somehow i feel that ive taken lag out of the equation as with my setup. Theres no waiting for the rpms to come in before enough exhaust gases are made - in order to get more turbo rpm's due to being geardriven... And btw vote for me! i need some fugging reputation..... i HATE being a moped rider :S >_<~ i dont even own one!! -_-

You thought of a belt type drive for the turbine?

.produKt
4th April 2006, 15:13
Engine spins clockwise. Turbo must be driven anticlockwise or all the air will just be commin out the opposite side, which just isnt cosha.. :X

And yes ive actually already explored this option. I came to the conclusion that gears would be easier because.

I could have them at a fixed distance
i dont know if anyone makes custom micro-v belts?
I'd have to setup a belt tensioner

Where as to use gearing all i need to do is have a bracket made at the right specs and have the gears welded in the appropriate places.....

AND! .

Damn your a forum whore snipey :D

You just got to post loads of crap to get off being a moped rider. its all in site faq. rep for sticking a turbo on something tiny, coming right up! One condition, make your own damn bracket, how hard can it be?!

.produKt
4th April 2006, 15:29
Quite hard when your flatmate steals all your tools when he does the fucking midnight bolt from the flat :pinch: :weird:

Shouldn't cost to much anyway. And besides, cant find the gears i need so they may have to be custom made too -_-~

id loan you mine, but the whole ditch in the middle too big thing...

Sniper
4th April 2006, 15:50
I know this is a really silly question and Im really not up to speed with this, but couldn't you get an engineer to modify the turbo to spin clockwise, or even simpler, turn the turbo around?

Devil
4th April 2006, 15:51
I'd go the gear way myself, then you can change the ratio's down the track if you dont get it right.

Tried lego sprockets? haww haww

imdying

I'm guessing those gear won't come cheap, wouldn't want to be changing those too often. Would have thought pulleys would be far cheaper to fabricate. Still a waste of money though.

I thought of that too, but the Exhaust wheel housing and compressor wheel housings are completely different (see photos).

And to turn the turbo around means having nowhere t' put ya leg....... at all... :-(

Do you earn money to have it just sit in the bank?

So once it's all going you'll be investing in a bit of pimping to make the bike look like a high performance racing machine?

imdying
4th April 2006, 18:34
No, but I'd use that money for something useful, like trading my ZXR250 on a RS250 Aprilia ;)

.produKt
4th April 2006, 18:37
Yup :).. well maybe. I've never pimped anything, so it might just get a big fuckoff pod filter :D. and maybe a boost gauge and a rev meter or somethin silly like that ;D

Make and adapter for the turbo that you can turn it round but have it away from your leg
