Yawwn. Old hat, repost and a 9% rev counter error isn't as uncommon as you'd think, even an engineered in one. Borrow a GPS unit, figure what speed you are really doing vs what the speedo reads and then match the gearing you're in to calculate what speed or revs you should be doing instead of what your gauges claim. Guarantee speedo and rev counter read high.

Having the TEKA tune done on the gixxer RPM was measured off the coils. tacho was 0.04% off indicated. Yamaha used the 17,500 as marketing bollocks.

I stand corrected in the case of Jimbo's GSXR, however my car is 8% out in both speed and rpm, and the 2004 R6 I had was 4% out in both.
I still think it's a moot point that's been jumped on by organisations with a vested interest in discrediting what is probably going to be THE Supersport bike to have in any competition in the world this year.

Er I was bullshitting really jim ol' fellah. Point is Yamaha made a big deal about the 17,500 thing. And Gav is right too gixxer riders and all that. Personally it peaves me a bit when manufacturers (all of them) quote outlandish HP figures and such. Even the new gixxer revs till 16000 but I'll bet they run out of puff before then.

Aha! Bench racing was it?
Sorry I'm a bit feeble.
My GSXR250 redlined at 17,000 rpm, but peak power was at 14,500rpm, and peak torque was 10,400, which meant it was a bit pointless to use the whole rev range, unless you wanted to hear "the noise".

Old news. Yamaha America made a thing about the 17.5k limit but nowhere else.
Seems the marketing guru's ran with some early information from the shop floor......not the smartest thing in the world. Especially where the yanks with all their class action suits are concerned.....

you have to wonder why when in a modern engine they know EXACTLY how many revs the thing is doing

you should know why all that rev over run is useful!

Dead right, and it got used, and used :)
That bike was fun. It may have been slow, but it weighed nothing and that shriek made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
