How long from your place to the site?

Jantar
21st April 2006, 20:24
Picton to Oturehua is a 9 to 10 hour ride, and in winter its best done over 2 days.

Most people at the Brass mix and make friends very easily so there is no reccommendation for "best company". If you feel a bit overwhelmed at your first Brass, look for the Chatto Creek MC tent and ask for Malcolm. I'll be somewhere handy and see that you meet a few other KBers down this way.

I'm not aware of a KB group ride, but there will be quite a few KBers onsite to make you welcome.

Wear good thermals for night time, but also bring light weight clothes for the daylight hours. The temperature can be over 20C during the day, yet still freeze or snow overnight.

I'll be there with the RE5 and trying to take the award for "Best Post Classic" :first:

paturoa
21st April 2006, 20:26
I haven't seen a RE5 for years, a runner?

Jantar

A runner? Of course its a runner. And it'll be ridden there and back. :ride:

not sure how many ferry riders there are but what is the best time or ferry to take across early morning or evening? due to people but mainly weather wise. being the straight and how nasty it can get was just hoping there might be a remote chance that some sailing times are better than others.

we are 1/2 way about 4.5 -5 hrs to rally depending on which way you go east coast or down the guts ( twizel , omarama etc ) either way a good ride

No, I have done Alex to Picton in just over 8 hours, so another 1 - 2 hours for someone who doesn't know the road should be about right. But being winter time I would strongly suggest that 2 days be allowed for that part of the ride.

T.I.E

sounds like leave ak on a thursday. head to wellington either late ferry or early next day.
friday picton to somewhere inbetween. and turn up on saturday morning.
sunday leave.

so which ferry is better early or late?

Jantar
21st April 2006, 21:19
When I used to live at Whakamaru (central Waikato) I would leave home on the thursday and catch the evening ferry. On leaving the ferry I would head south to Blenheim for the night. The next day (Friday) I would travel to either Oamaru or Outram (near Dunedin), then head to the rally site on saturday morning.

Remember, the roads may be icy (althought not likely), so plan on travelling a bit slower that you normally would.

Highlander
22nd April 2006, 11:12
I'd agree with Jantars 8-9 hrs from Picton.
We have done Cromwell - Picton (and vice versa) a number of times in the car with the Kids looking at 10 hrs including stops.

Would be keen on doing a Brass monkey run, but it won't be this year.

Jantar
22nd April 2006, 11:19
C'mon Highlander. You only need to take one shift run off to have a whole 2 weeks down here. Plenty of accomadation available. :scooter:

Highlander
22nd April 2006, 11:21
No cover that weekend.
Taking the shift run after that off and going to Adelaide.

oldrider
22nd April 2006, 12:46
I was just referring to today's traffic and the intensity of policing making it a bit harder to maintain that sort of timing.(In winter around 800/900km?)
I used to do Picton easily in five/six hours from here but last time it was a very different story (much smaller bike)
Coming home just seemed to take forever.
Maybe I am just getting a bit too old now. Cheers John.

Jantar

picton dorm approx $23 per bed. thats my price range stink.
also one place can garage ya bike upto 13 bikes obviously depending on how many are going. etc etc etc. and they are close to the ferries. so numbers need to be in sooner the better for cheaper ferries and the best accomidation options.

:doobey: Hey got to take the oppertunity when it strikes :nya:

But for anyone travelling through to the Brass, I can't offer a hell of a lot of accomodation, a couple comfy & another couple roughing it a bit and covered parking for bikes.
But if theres any minor mechanical problems that need looking at, I've got a fairly well stocked workshop & also can arrange access to a shop in ashvagas if the worst eventuates.
and the rally site is less than 350km from here too

cool guys - we'll be in touch soon, I'm going to talk to TIE this weekend to sort some more details.

Went to Motomail on the way home today and got a 2 piece plastic over raincoat XXXL! It fits nicely over my bike jacket jacket and bike trou and will add to the warmth / comfort. It was only $45, looks a bit flimsy but will do the trick nicely. :scooter:

I can't say I've tried all of the coffee places you recommend, but certainly Shawtys don't have any decent coffee. All they have is that machine made milk stuff like latte or flat white, or those tiny wee black coffees like short black which is only a thimble full or long black which is in a tea cup size. There are still places where you can get a decent mug of coffee though, large, rich, and just a small dash of milk. Usually its those ones that have filter coffee, and there are still some places that will bring a plunger of coffee to the table.

Not sure if Tera Viva is open anymore - its right across the road from my work (Tait) + it closed late last year because the lease holders wanted too much money for the Cafe to renew the lease. Dunno what state it is in now (shows you how much coffee I drink!).

and the "pig road" i think does not sound like fun. that must be when i put the training wheels on.
thinking about extra wide side bars just icase of an "oppppssssss bloody (insert bad words here) black ice"

that would be the 'Pig Route'
Done the brass once, and it was DAMN cold. They closed the road cos it snowed on the night we arrived and didn't open it till 2 pm the next day (saturday). It pays to get there in daylight hours, i.e. before 5pm if poss, easier to avoid the snowdrifts when you can see them :doobey:

i was very appreciative of having my pillion (sister) on the back. She sang me songs through the headset and basically kept me awake during the torrential rain to Timaru, then kept me warm during the freezing cold ride thru the pig route.

That was 10 years ago exactly, found my badge the other day.
Maybe it is time for a reminder of why I haven't been since? Be a last minute thing if I do venture down there tho

Ha I'll have to jog my own memory of some of the roads  embarrassed to say but its been 12yrs since i did a brass:innocent:

the ice & grit lols just imagine course sand spread over a skating rink

Best time to get through the pig route is before mid arvo & the amount of bikes rolling through there its fairly easy to follow a clean line ( though i have seen a GSX-R11 spit itself 50m out into a paddock only a few kms before Ranfurly, the rider was being a numbnut though & hit black ice at around 200 clicks).
About the most risky business is toddling around the rally site & the gateway area used to be fun late in the day, makes a fairly entertaining spectator sport too :blip:

- Tirau via Matamata

TIE,

What do you think of the following (i'll bring the map with me for that coffee I promised u)

- Tirau via Matamata
- Right at Atiamuri onto 30 via Magakino 32 to Turangi
- Desert Rd (get a taste of the cold) alternate West side of Ruapehu 47 if Desert road closed.
- Left at Mangaweka onto 54 thru to Fielding.
- Bunnythorpe, Ashurst, Woodville and 2 thru to WN.

Bit further but less traffic and cops

how does coffee tomorrow sound? and i don't think i have travelled some of those roads so it might just be a good idea. new roads and if it keeps us of the main drag i like it. might even be quicker in some repects.

As a really good motorcycling alternative, turn right at Tokoroa instead of Atiamuri. Its shorter to Whakamaru, and fewer straights. The bends are generally open sweepers with a lovely downhill section.

:gob: Paturoa haha "the duvet" lols, best advice would be a 4season sleeping bag & a MSR thermal survival blanket  .

One year I was there it was a -13 degree ground frost and another year it was so cold I couldn't sleep even with a tank full of brandy on board ended up doing the all night fire watch, which actually ended up pretty good spoke to a bloke who had the same bike as i had & we compared notes and the bikes had come of the factory production line one after the other going by the serial numbers  .

Dam...

So thats a 2 duvet frost!

Camped in moutains behind Lake Tahoe once and absolutely frooze my arse off. Didn't have a bottle of brandy, just as well cos I'd have ended up being bear breakfast. We thought we had plenty of warm kit, I had no idea what cold was up to then.

So far I've got a 3 rating bag and a big old bag to use as an outer. Now looking for an air matress and a under. (Perhaps I can get a duvet in the new panniers)

That is SDU DR650 (blue) Green Meanie KLX400 (green) and Me on a KTM640 (orange)
So keep an eye out for trailies on the road, we should be able to spot your bike as you pass us.
We are stopping often for SDU to rest (RSI) and the hard seats and small fuel tanks we have.
So if you want stop on the out skirts of a town and we will stop for a coffee?
We plan on stopping every 100 odd k's from ChCh.

It looks like we are going to have a good size crew from KB.
Maybe it will pay to meet up so we can set up camp in the same area, so we can tell lies and fall over and pinch fire wood and a drum.

get some new boots, many many years of riding from puhoi to auckland, and i have had my fair share of wet boots. snowseal is good but found after about 20 minutes the rain would find it's way through.
i used to heat my boots up in the oven to help the wax really get into it.
then i just upgraded to waterproof boots and they are wicked. never had that leaky boot problem again.
waterproof boots were good in winter. very warm and dry. but come summer time wow they got hot. they don't breathe.

We're people of little imagination I'm afraid so our plan at this stage is to head into town and proceed to engage in activities of an inebriating nature.
It's a good and simple plan I think and unlikely to change.

Spent about an hour in front of the idiot box last nite and drowned the old boots with sno seal. The missus gave me the "what the f#$% do you think you are doing with my hair dryer look". It probably also didn't help much that she was trying to watch something at the time!

I gave them a good scrubbing with hot soapy water on sat arvo and they spent the nite on the hot water cylinder. Anyway the boots just soaked up the sno seal, particularly into the stiching.

Our crap weather gave the boots a good test his morning on the way to work. All warm and dry.

Also got some polyprops (as suggested by Kerry at Motohaus - his 25th BM this year - silly bugger). Dam, I'm a good looking hunka man in those - not! My missus just lol.

I got myself a neck warmer last year - it wasn't the best but it made a huge difference. I think I'll be getting a decent one this year + lots of polypro + PVC pants. Got decent water proof boots (they handled 7 hours of west coast rain and my feet stayed bone dry and toasty warm (the rest of me was soaking wet and cold).

Then went home and put the panniers, pack, tent, etc etc on the bike and went for a test ride to see what it was like with a bike full of shite. Just the same as having mrs paturoa on the back. I went up the nw motorway and it was quite windy, all was fine.

I have a 3rd rider at this stage (non-KBer) leaving AK with us.

T.I.E and I will be finalising the details this week and will post the route and possible "join points" for others to join (or just do a part ride with us - diddle if a leave pass is granted) this coming week.

We have 2 amazing offers of accomodation in CHCH for Friday nite.

On the way home, a gent on a FJ caught up and we had a short chat at the lights, if u r a KBer then :niceone:

O the good old days when enough was enough when you passed out. :innocent:

But yes is was cold, cold enough to freeze a fuel line on some ones bike and split it. SIWT
We had a tarp over our bikes and still got a inch of frost on the bike seats.
And a lot of bikes would not start because the batteries in the bike's were so cold the the voltage drop was to much to get them to fire up.
So if you can expose your battery to the sun (if there is any) and let it warm up a bit before trying to start your bike if it does not fire up straight away. Or wait for the quad with jumper leads to help you start your bike before you flatten the battery.

Just where you are likely to meet the first snowy or frosty roads depends a lot on the route you take and the weather leading up to your trip and the time of day. There have been many years where the roads have been completely clear.

The most likely place for the first encounter with ice or snow is on the Dersert Road just south of Rangipo. Next is between Waiouru and Taihape. From here the roads are likely to remain clear until you reach the Pig Route.

Just ride sensibly, and treat any shaded spots as potential frosty areas and you should be OK.

One would think that their time could be spent more productively elsewhere.
I think that they caught one bloke last year and none the year before, and I have only heard of prangs on the way to the rally in years past. I didn't realise that there had ever been an issue with folk leaving.

See, it works - stops drink-drivers (riders?) being on the road!!!:nya:

i am just a little curious as to where i meet the first snowy icey roads in the south island. so i know where to take it easy, and be nice to know the streatches of
Snow, well not till ya head inland really and thats only if the weathers been real crap.
Icey, well any shady spots in the am realy, but as far as slipery goes ya 1st caution point will be (apart from the Blenhiem drivers) the Kaikour coast if its wet... the rd along the sea side can be very slipery when wet and theres a few corners that can catch ya out, however it is one awesome piece a rd, mind the coppers tho.

i have been given the ok to take the flag along.
yes the KB FLAG
spank is the man.
but however it will be treated well as its on loan.
the stand is one of those ones that goes under a vechile wheel. i can imagine like a realestate one. i can courier it down or pack it up.
but wondering are there vechiles allowed? does anyone have a car, and a tyre to park it under?
or else ill check it out and find other ways to mount it.
but speak up as i only have a few days to sort it out any ideas?

PS i'm thinking it will need to be looked after rather well, thinking of vandalism and also theft so it wil come down at night. just to be on the safe side.

Just a worthy note for Ice, when leaving ChCh on the Saturday morning, depending on the weather a couple of places that can be iced up are the Dunsandel Bend over the railway particularly on the sth side of the rail crossing.
And also the Rakaia bridges can ice up too. And then Chertsey along past the Domain/Trotting track (this can be the preverbial skating rink!).

Be aware if it's a cold clear morning these spots will stay iced till at least mid-morning.

Kerry from Motohaus did me a very sharp deal on a new rear and I brought the old half worn one home. When the new one is shagged i'll pay him labour to put it back on. It will cost me a little extra this way, but I wont have any hassles or delays on the trip down, and I know that I wil have good tyres for the whole trip.

If you mention this thread he said that he would do 10%. Pull a face, suck some air, frown a little, tell him about your 10 kids etc etc and see what he says from there.

Well Green Meanie can not make the Brass now.

On Wednesday he was at work and had to taken to the Hospital.
It turned out the his hernia that he has had for a long time got worse.
And it strangulated (hernia) it self.
He is not a well lad at the moment and we will miss him on the ride.
He is right pissed off after all the gear he has bought for this trip and was as keen as mustard to do the ride (Dansey Pass) and the whole rally thing for the first time.

So look after yourself mate and get well, so we can go for a ride.:scooter:

Ouch, that's gotta be uncomfortable. Say hi to him for me, and I hope he's on the mend soon. All that effort to get those tyres on too, you'll be able to reclaim that battleship you stuck on there for balance now.

Flocker (KLR650) and I will be leaving Chch at 1130 Friday and going to Kurow via MacKenzie Pass and Hakataramea Pass and staying at the Kurow Motor Camp on Friday night now. Then go to the site on Saturday via Danseys Pass.

Decided not to go to Danseys Pass Motor Camp, as apparently there nothing else there. At least Kurow will have a warm pub and a hot meal on offer.

Transalper and co are staying there too, so we'll catch up with them there, and hopefully catch up with you and SDU on the Sat morn.

Yes it is and I will pass on your regard's.
But at the moment he is on the real good drug's and is a bit of a giggle with the stuff he is coming out with.
The strange thing is that on Friday the Hospital had told him to come on on Tuesday for the operation.
He turned it down so he could still do the trip.
And on the Wednesday he had the op whether he wanted it or not.
Must have meant to be, I guess.

Shit happens.
When he is better we will do a trip on two on them to break them in so to speak, before we put some good knobs back on.
May do an over night'er somewhere.
But that will be 4-5+ weeks away at least.

Not sure what time we are leaving or what we are now now doing as there is only to two of us.
I do not think Sal, as much as she would like to do that route that you to are doing, could do it.
As it is her first long solo trip with gear. May run it buy her and ring you.
We will have to see how she feels on the way down, who knows, we'll see.
Have a safe and good trip.

We may come and see you and the rest there. As we plan to ride though there, but we may be to early for you lot.
As we are spending the night at Kauru Hill area.
And we do not want to be back tracking until the morning to do the Danseys Pass. So have a good night you lot.

It's been awhile since I have been there, will be interesting to see the old place again.
SDU has never been there and has heard about the place so for her it is a must stop and see. So if we do not meet up at the start or see you on the road, we will catch up with there, I guess.

A lot will depend on weather conditions on the day, but Rally site to Kaikoura should be 7 - 8 hours if you're not sure of the road. Kaikoura to Picton is around 2 hours but watch for slippery roads before sunrise.
