It has.
Some of the MotoGP teams are working on "fly by wire" controls.

Nope. Not if you mean the twistgrip. We used to have throttle levers instead. Twistgrip didn't come along until late in the scene.

As to the actual throttle itself ,misnomer actually, not all flow control systems work by throttling the intake. Been lots of ways of doing that.

The schraeder valve in the tyres is probably the longest running development without being changed in the last 80ish years

Sparkplugs has been about for a goodish while. Not sure when hot tube ignition breathed its last , but the sparkplug has been sparking away since at least 1900, in pretty much its present form. Invented by Oliver Lodge, Robert Bosch was supplying them in 1902,Albert Champion started the Champion Sparkplug Company in 1904.

Does a 1900 era sparkplug fit into a modern bike (or car for that matter)?

thanx .could only find the Ropers steamer as an early indication of throttle.1894-6.twisted forward tho.appreciate that there have been a lot of different ways of intake.

Another interesting thing about spark plugs. I was reading an old motoring mag from the mid 1920s. A Champion spark plug ad listed the price at 5 shillings
They were still the same price in the mid 60s. I doubt any other essential item has stayed the same price for so long.

Indians had a left hand throttle, and Harley's for many years used a wire instead of bowden cable, and the throttle didn't return when you let it go,true push pull.

Over-priced to begin with or became easier to produce (more cost effectively)?

I remember a Happy Days (saw it like 20yrs ago) episode where the Fonz had to be a juror. He found no interest in it, until the case came up. Seems a motorcyclist was accused of stealing a lady's handbag with his left hand while riding his bik . The Fonz found out what bike it was and knew it had a left hand throttle, therefore (in this case) proving the rider innocent.

They already have it, I think a lot of them would be unrideable without fly by wire throttle.

Apparently the reason for the left hand throttle was so they could ride and shoot and still be able to control the bike.

so it had nothing to do with changing gear with your right hand?

We have come a long way, now on the harleys the grip on the right hand side adjusts the volume, and not much else.:blip:

An AC stands for Mr Champion too.Even into the late '80's I was using ''detachable'' sparkplugs in the likes of my Seagull outboard and old rotary hoe.The sparkplug was 2 piece, you unscrewed the porcelain from the body, then you could clean the plug with a wire brush and scrapers - oh no,that wouldn't do these days would it! You need to sell new ones, not keep the old ones going.

Well,I guess pistons are still pistons, they came before throttles, sparkplugs, motorcycles or even fuel.

Did you know, also, that at one time you could get spare ceramics for the two piece plugs ?

(AC was the company that Mr Champion started after the bankers diddled him out of control of his Champion company).

Not much chance of a 100 year old piston fitting a modern engine. I think that the sparkplug is probably the one thing that you could take a 100 year old one and put it into a modern engine and have it work . (Hmm 100 years might be touch and go, I don't know what thread the very first ones had,but certainly 80 years, the present 14mm was around in the 1920s)

They ain't THAT bad - only had to replace an oil light sender unit (twice, faulty batch, covered under warranty) and fix the frame end of my earth strap from the battery, that's it in the last 5 years.

Apart from the usuals like WOF and tyres etc.

Ahh, the episode that coined a new phrase 'jump the shark.' Any show that is suffering in the ratings after being strong and completely changes direction to attract more ratings is now considerd to be 'jumping the shark'. It also normally indicates the death of the series.

as some have mentioned, the yama R6 with the YCC-T-fly-by-wire throttle, (chip controlled throttle) , it uses electro-hydraulic actuators to opperate the control surfaces according to electronic signals sent to it by a computer..where the twistgrip turns a sensor which is connected to the fuel injection computers, (as theres 3 CPU's on the r6) then it calculates everything to decide the injection butterfly position etc etc - reading all the bike mags you can get ur hands on comes in handy..
