I have an early 1990s DR250 and have noticed that the rear sprocket moves about too much - lateral movement, not back and forth as you might expect. Any guesses as to why or useful tips before I pull it apart?

It's probably best if you just pull it appart and get in there and take a look.
If it's the same as the set up on my 87 600 it's a rubber shock drive coupling thingy and it has probably broken down,it's easy to fix the rubber shock drive thingy just pulls out of the hub easy peasy !!!

Yeah mate, if it has a rubber 'cush drive', then it may be no big thing.
I assume it does, as if it's a solid mounting then I'm sure that you'd notice the sprocket mounting bolts loose.
Unless it's REALLY excessive....don't sweat it.

Also make sure all the spacers are there and fitted correctly.

I reckon the sprocket spacer (beneath the carrier) hasn't been fitted or the bearing in it's fucked.

Have a look here
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp

This site has microfiches online for alot of bikes. If your DR is the SE model 1990-1995 then it has a cush drive and sprocket carrier. If it's just a DR250 then the sprocket should bolt directly to the hub.

Andy.

According to the parts fiche the sprocket bolts directly to the hub.

On 90-93 models yes. Later models had a seperate rear sprocket drum with rubber shock absorbers aka cush drive.

OK - pulled it apart. Mine's a 1993 and it has a bearing which is totally shot. Gave it to a local car/machine shop to pull the bearing and fit a new one.

Cheers for the advice.
