Not sure where I should ask this but anyways...

I'm sitting my bike handling skills cert on saturday and need a helmet etc so thought I may as well go and get all my kit this week. Can anyone recommend any of the Hamilton bike shops? I had a google and looked in yellow pages but there doesn't seem to be too many :(
...I might even end up having to make a trip up to Auckland if there's nothing much around here.

the 3 hamilton bike shops are within a hundred meters of each other (Road & Sport, Honda, and Hamilton Motorcycle Centre).. Te Rapa Straight (next to the BP petrol station).. just walk between them and choose which one you want to buy from :p

..and welcome to KB

Tell him he owes Daryl a dubbo if you buy anything off him!

He has some good stuff, search this site for quasimoto

Talk to Brett of Quasimoto fame for your gear or John at Boyd Honda. All of the others charge like you're made of money.

I always have my Blackbird serviced at Boyd Honda because of their good workshop staff but I always go to Road and Sport next door for tyres and clothing because I've always appreciated their excellent front of shop service over the years

Talk to Al at Road & Sport or John at Boyds.
Both reasonable sorta Roosters.

Boyds have prolly got a better range of Helmets (price-wise I mean).

well it would help if they were open on saturdays, maybe people who worked for a living could then visit. A bike shop that is closed on saturday??????????? i have never been able to visit them to give a verdict, and i love yams.

Personally Ive never had much time for Road and Sport after the way they treated me when I went to test I bike with them. But that was a few years ago now.

For a 20 min trip it would be worth chekin out Phils Motorcycle centre in morrinsville.....you could kit yrself out with most of the gear for the same price that the Ham shops charge for just 1 item.Real good to deal with & their prices are sharp as.Good luck.

They are actually open on Saturdays. I think it's 9:00am to 12:00pm. Worse is the weekday hours. I can't even drop off my bike BEFORE or AFTER work cos they're not open that early or late. WTF??

Well I went to all three of those shops mentioned on Te Rapa and I'm pleased to report that all the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, a refreshing change to some past experiences so thumbs up for them _b
Got all excited by all the shiny toys and ended up grabbing a whole bunch of stuff from Road & Sport, now I just need a bike hahaha.

Well done on getting your gear.. What budget are you looking for a bike? New or used?

Heh cheers Zero, I'm getting there one step at a time :)
Not wanting to spend more than $5k but I'm one of those silly people that must have a bike that is aesthetically pleasing to me while still maintaining functionality :P
I like the full fairing look even if it means I end up scratching them all to buggery.

Scratching on a good day ;)
If you take it easy, and take time to learn your limits, and expand them, the bike may yet stay shiney!
Aesthetics are a large part of what bikes are about, I mean, think of those poor bastards that ride harleys!

Full fairing look is good, but as I have learnt from advice on this site, go for 'the cheap bike' option first, to learn the ropes etc*, and then, when you feel confident enough, then get a better bike (it'll also give you a chance to put some more cash together).. The next bike I'm wanting is the Hyosung GT250R, cause it's full-size frame, and I think it looks pretty.. My other choice was the Suzuki GSX-250.

*etc includes: binning, dropping, having a good time without worrying about expensive repairs..

I've binned twice so far, Weekend 1, and Weekend 3.. I've now completed 3000km on my bike, and am feeling confident enough to trust myself with a more powerful fully-faired bike.. unfortunately, my wallet isn't confident enough yet :(.

..to sum it up, go get your learners, and go find a cheap bike to start with, and go from there

PS. If you're not entirely happy about my post, please forget that you read it :)

"take it easy"? having a cheap bike is all about the opposite
**here are the times you risk stuff you might try later on an expensive bike, and if you fail, it won't take 2 years to pay back for repairs :D

................ok, fine I admit it, I've gone mad..

..and don't go on too much about 'those poor bastards that ride harleys' ..it's not there fault that they don't have any standards on 'a nice looking bike'

There are people out there that have never crashed!
It depends on your self control more than anything else, but if you have ridden in the past helps too.

from my recent purchase's i found that the honda shop had a far better selection of gear and better prices as well.

never had time to pop into the motorcycle centre on the other side of the rd (takes too much energy)

When I first ot my gear I bought it all from Boyds. Had time on my hands and wanted best bang for bucks, so I looked in all the bike shops in Hams. Boyds was the cheapest. And then when I went up to go and pay for everything they knocked off about 15-20% because I bought it all there (Helmet, Jacket, Pants, Boots, Gloves...well into 4 figures still) but still good bang for buck.
And ever since that first big purchase I have always got discounts when buying from them be it tyres, chain lube, whatever.
I wouldn't go anywhere else in Hamilton unless they didn't stock what I needed.

As for fully faired bikes I can't say I liked the Suzuki GSX250 very much. It could wind out to 170 cos it had fairings but at anything under about 130 my naked VTR will out accelerate them and I don't have to ring the nuts off it to do it. (Of course these speed test were carried out on the track....Tui anyone?)

Go see Aaron @ Boyd Honda - he knows his stuff and will pop down the road to the supplier and get a lid for you if they dont have them in stock...

Me likes Boyd Honda...so far have spent over $20k with 'em (eeeeeek, hope the wife doesnt see this!!)

Boyd's have been the only shop to chuck me keys for a test ride, no matter what license I had.

I had my learners for 2 days, and they let me take a vtr250 for a spin, while other shops didn't offer me a ride at all.

Last week Greg boyd chucked me the keys to a hornet, but I turned down the ride (scared I will spend money I don't have :) )
every other shop seem to make a big deal out of test rides .. how do they expect to sell bikes if they don't let you ride them ???

Hamilton Motorcycles won't even talk to me .. I've been there 4 times, and never ... *NEVER* has anyone come to talk to me .. I must have retard tattooed on my forehead :)

Dunno about test rides....Road and sport let me fang a 1999 GSXR750 while I was still on my learners, I think it just depends who you talk to.
But I found them to be overpriced for most things normally and not to free with the discounts either.
My girlfriend got a lot of her riding gear there and they gave her bugger all discount.

Could well be. Anything to get punters through the door is a smart move.
Supercross cycles, (just up from Boyds in the hunting/fishing old premises) might be having a accessories sale in a week or two also.
Possibly some "opening specials" at Hamilton Honda also.
Hamilhole is starting to get organised again.:woohoo:

I wont go back in the door of Road & Sport after I bought my VL250 there, great with making the sale, but no follow thu:spanking:, I paid for screen, saddle bags to be fitted at the time of purchase,:blank:, then got the run around BIG time, I think they thought I was a mushroom with the amount of bull the were feeding me & they couldn't get there lies straight:devil2:

Love dealing with Boyd's tho, what R&S said wasn't avaible they had for me in 4hrs:first:

Interesting, Dave - I had the opposite experience with Road and Sport in March this year. They gave me mega discount on my SV - enough to fully kit up with everything - helmet, leathers, boots, gloves etc for what the bike alone would have cost me. Guess I got 'em on a good day - or got a good salesman......or maybe it was because it was their last SV and they were going out of Suzuki the next week.......whatever - I was happy enough.

Well i have to support Boyd Honda.
Bought a few things from there. Always get a discount, All the staff are friendly and easy to talk to. I've bought a couple of things from Road & Sport also, but never sent anything to their workshop, heard bad things about back there.
Also Boyds took me in so i could do work experience in the workshop :first:

9cents - Dont let people tell you that you are going to crash, or that once you get your first bin over with you will be better off. I've never crashed my bike and ive been riding for a year and a half ish, about 30,000k's in total on both bikes. Just take it easy, know your limits and go 80% of that. Then when things go wrong, you have 20% left over to recover.
Good luck on the road, Might see you out there.

A bit premature considering they only opened this week. The "boys" in the back prob have more experience between them in MC industry than you could shake a stick at. And wait there's more to come!
