View Full Version : Is your boss biker friendly ?

Ixion
6th May 2006, 15:34
Hm, question arose in another thread about bikers not being able to ride to work during the week, cos of copping flak from the boss about turning up on a motorbike/in motorbike gear .

Which made me wonder just how common this situation is. Certainly never encountered it m'self, but I can believe (some bosses being what they are) that others may have. So, I'll have a go at one of these polly things.

Question is : is your boss / workplace biker friendly.Or would turning up on a bike each morning be an unwise career move. Comments as to why would be good. Could be useful to BRONZ, maybe even pull in the unions and WINZ.

EDIT If you have a job but no bike, put what the reaction would be. If you have a bike but no job, I even made an option for you, just so you wouldn't feel left out.

My manager recently passed his learners and now rides a GZ250. Our site General Manager has a Triumph Bonneville, and another manager has quite a number of bikes. One of the senior mangers in Wellington also rides and has a recent article (Postie Bike Challange) published in BRM.

So, no problems with turning up on a bike. In fact one could be called a bit soft on the few days that the bike is left at home. Now we are just waiting for K14 to get a road bike instead of bringing his cage to work each day.

Well I'm the GM so I answered 'I *am* the boss', but I obviously answer to the Directors. Both of whom think my bike is cooler than a cool thing, one is intimidated by it (it's mean and scary and growls lots), while the other has an extensive riding history overseas. Also means parking by the door.

However I'm mostly using the cage to go back and forth to work on week days, at least until the wife quits work at the end of May in preparation for our newborn due in July. Then it's back to biking 7 days a week!! I thumb my nose at Christchurchs winters, I wanna ride and ride I will.

Workmates and boss are into dirt bikes so they dont care but I'd rather use the car for work and bike for play(get plenty of time on it without having to take it to work)

No probs where I work. Boss has a m/c. Forman has one, but has it up for sale on Trademe. The leading hand has one. 4 out of 7 in my section ride a m/c to work. Scuffy bunch of workers we are too welding and such ;). I do get commented on my beard occasionally though.

Basicly if our output is ok we get left alone..............

My boss is not that stupid to say anything about riding bikes. Although if there are people working for bosses that would, thats stupid IMO.:gob:

I am the boss, and I'm very friendly:yes:

Having a company vehicle has been one of the reasons I've not ridden on the road for a few years, and sold my road bike, but now with my new purchase I'll get back into it, and probably leave the vehicle at work now and again.

My Boss, His Boss and the MD all think it's pretty cool!
I get a park inside the warehouse so that the bike doesn't get knocked over which is cool. I am the only person who rides to work though.

The only issue I have is getting there early enough to get the shower first (bloody gym bunnies, lol) and there was this one day where I forgot to pack my shoes into my bag.....

I am the same Nicksta, Corporate attire required, but I find it is worth it for the ride!!

Nicksta
6th May 2006, 17:22
I work in an office, have to wear corporate attire (heels, business clothes, nice hair and makeup) I would ride to work but it would mean restyling my hair and carrying a complete change of clothes and makeup... and i also have limited space for storring cordura, boots and helmet in my pokey little cubicle.... that and there is not much bike friendly parking (and if i took a normal car park in our allocated parking the others would bitch about a bike being parked there taking up space)... the bike park we did have got taken away in leu of a smokers area which doesnt get used as it is too far from the offices....
all said.. next summer when i get back from the states.. i'll be riding to work every day on my new bike (when i get it :) )

I am retired but when I was working I had a Company car as part of my package and still took my bike in lieu of the car "and" used the fuel card to fill the bike.
I used to use the bike in preference to the company car to travel all around the South Island for work purposes. (I was a manager of sorts myself)
The CEO even bought a bike the same as mine after borrowing it for a trial.
This was never a problem, was even covered by company insurance!
Probably a company a lot of you complain about regularly too. Cheers John.

I can't imagine any job where arriving on a bike specifically could be a problem for how you do your work. I am the owner and have a company vehicle so wasn't sure which answer to give - I need to have my van at home so I picked the second option. I often cycle to work in the summer if I can fit my van in the workshop, and use the vee twin when I can work it but mostly have to take the van home in case I get a call out. WHat job would prevent you from riding to work? I can't think of one and reading these replies see that no one has come up with one yet. I guess if parking was a problem and the boss wanted the company car/van taken home instead of being parked in town...

My MD has 20 odd bikes in the garage, but all old crinkly ones. In saying that, I'll gladly take his RG500 off his hands.
But he is in Dunny Din. Boss in auckland doesn't have a petrol headed bone in his body, and the local one has had bikes, so he is sweet.
they did get a bit grumpy in auckland, with my gear being around the place, but I just started wearing T shirts and shorts to work, gave them something worse to complain about, then the gear in my office ceased to be an issue.

Now if I can only stop the Auckland guy from getting pissed off about KB useage during work time, I'll be sussed!

Lol timed thread

I went to my bosses house today (lives in outback albany with the nice roads)

I used his garage to change my spark plugs (which he bought for me I pay him back later) today.

he's been on one KB ride. you may remember him, the only guy who brought a goldwing on a KB ride ever.

(ps: my bike runs freaking awesome now with the new sparks!)

Our CEO always likes to point my bike out to visitors. Not entirely sure whether it's because it looks cool parked next to his car or whether the company is an Equal Opportunity employer by hiring village idiots.

My immediate boss is working in Singapore on attachment. He's got a Honda CB1000 Big One in NZ, but he's just bought himself an FZ1 in Singapore and when he comes back to NZ next year, he's having it shipped to Perth and riding it to Darwin, Adelaide and Melbourne before sending it home. Now how cool is he???

Well, I work at an advertising agency. They're used to very individual types in the creative area here and motorcylists are actively encouraged as they feel they are likely to think more freely than the average person.

As most people live in town they tend to ride mountain bikes to work, but one of the designers and I both ride bikes to work, and we are both allowed to park in the directors car parks next to the Mercedes Benzes, Lexuses (should that be Lexi?) and Evo Lancers.

The bosses don't give a shit what we wear to work (most people wear jeans and a shirt) and certainly don't worry about bike gear at all.

I love my job...

A few weeks ago we had our visual merchandiser in at work who turned up in the shop holding a motorbike helmet. My boss asked him if he rode a bike... he said "nah I like to wear this in my car!" She felt pretty stupid! And he is hot as so yeh!!

But nah my boss is sweet about anything at all... aslong as I am looking decent when I am in the shop!

after 10+ years of suit and tie jobs, I finally have a job that doesn't require it.

Besides it now saves me 30 mins in rush hour traffic each way and my boss is also a biker. So no I don't get much hassle

it's really funny, cause i work at a supermarket so parking in the carpark is a big no no, but the boss doesn't care if i park in gaps where cars can't park, like on the little garden beside the store, he went on the rampage a few months ago (for about the 5th time while i've worked there) and without warning towed all the staff cages away, but left my bike, never really talked to him about it, but i think we sort of have an unvoiced agreement that he'll leave it alone so long as it stays out of the way, and i keep turning up on time and doing the work

Use to commute to work every day in the previous job, no problems, but they must be a little worried as a few good lads were lost on the roads with their bikes. Have the company deisel beast to get me around the place now.

Onearmedbandit reminded me of the morning commutes in CHCH, can't say she was too enjoyable for a Northlander in the middle of winter, that's for sure!!

200g Blue nose and gropper $5.50

Fish is not fresh. He says it is, but it is not.

Mr Seafood genuine paua fritters have paua in them, for $6 for a 100g one

Non genuine dont and are $2 for 100g

My boss is quite cool.

But when asked for somewhere to "Hang my Bike gear" supplied a beautifully crafted wardrobe.

Then proceeded to refuse entry to my sopping wet gear cos it would get his stuff wet... Just give me a bloody coat stand!

I can do pretty much as I please. I've taken to parking the bike in a covered walkway which is right outside my office window so I can keep an eye on it. Nobody has said anything and I wouldn't expect them to.
Due to the nature of my job I need to be reasonably presentable so I can't wear leathers all day. I change into some trou when I get there, the boots stay on though.

Working part-time as a labourer while at uni, bike has never been an issue. More likely that they will comment on it and ask how fast I go. Or I passed the odd contractor on the way out to jobs in Beachlands :innocent:

Here's hoping come mid year that which ever company hires me, likes bikes, as I haven't bothered to get a cage license yet. Quite a good excuse, as I don't think I could sit in traffic anyway.

edit: ticked student... job doesn't exactly require me to be neat and tidy :D

In my previous job it wasn't a problem (being the GM), the director tried to discourage me getting a bike . He had spent most of his youth riding a triumph round Iran without a helmet; had been KO'd for a week after a hard landing once. (Took the bike for a spin round the carpark a few times & pronounced it topheavy :Pokey:)

One of the managers reguarly took a days off to race his classic sidecar :chase:.

Usually parked in the main courtyard / entrance way & no one dared to complain , (on occasions customers would ride up and park next to it ).

Can't ride to work now as im self employeed and have to wear suit etc.

My boss has an audi and thinks it's cool that one of her managers rides to work - she is especially keen on the loud vtwin noise it makes in the underground garage. I ride to work cos it's less stressful than taking my car. I tend to drive my car when I need good hair for going out later or something. Most people that come to meetings may see me beforehand in my gear but when I come to the meeting, I'm transformed into a business woman. I travel to meetings on it as well. I just ask the receptionist if there is anywhere I can leave my gear ,do a quick change in the toilets and no one notices. My ventura pack rack is also the biggest handbag I have.

Over all my work does not matter. When we were moving to new offices, and put a new parking lot in, i asked to put a motorbike park in for me which they did which is right ourside my window so i can get look out side at my bike every day.

They are not to fussed that i ride, and i even get paid to ride my bike to other depots for work from time to time

So long as you turn up and the work gets done, then they have no recourse as to the mode of transport you use.

Everywhere I've worked were fine with it. They even sort out covered carparks for me (free of charge). The last place apologised because they didn't have any room undercover for bikes. They did let us park off the road and outside the back door so we didn't have to worry about damage! This led to all the smokers lusting over the array of shiney bikes outside the back door.

My Bosses (husband & wife team) are cool about it.
She worries about me. Scared that something might happen to me & thinks I must be nuts to ride but at the same shows off with a few of our clients that I do ride.
He is into cycling, Kayaking.... and if he had ever gave it a go (especially dirt riding) I reckon he'd be hooked.
