My son is currently doing a Victoria University of Wellington Bachelor of Information Technology, Software Engineering degree. He is now in his third year of a four year degree and before next year is finished (i.e. over the next 18 months) he needs to do some practical work to complete the degree course requirements.

He has tried finding work through the usual channels such as Student Job Search, contacts through his lecturers etc and hasn't had much luck.

The requirement is that he needs to have done 800 hours total and at least 300 hours for one employer and some of that time needs to be in the skills area that he is learning i.e. not just work using computers. So as I understand it he could do some of the time doing anything from helpdesk work, data entry or whatever (general type work associated with IT) but needs to be able to move on to some more course oriented work as well.

As far as skills goes he has told me this:

The following is a list of skills that I have gained, and could use in the workplace.

Software Engineering
- Software documentation
- Software testing
- Java
- C++
- Code debugging
- Object Oriented analysis and design
Database Development
- SQL commands
- MS Access database development
Web Development
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- Graphics
- Java Applets
- PHP

As far as his course goes so far his results have been virtually straight A's in all subjects as follows:

2004: (Currently Enrolled In)
BITT301 IT Project Management
BITT302 Ethical & Legal Issues
COMP301 Software Engineering Principles
COMP302 Database Systems
COMP304 Programming Languages
COMP311 User Interface Design
ELCM202 Principles & Applications In Multimedia 1

Results
2003:
COMP201 System & Program Development A-
COMP202 Formal Methods of Computer Science A+
COMP203 Computer Organisation A-
COMP204 Digital Network Technology A
INFO212 Systems Analysis A+

COMP103 Introduction to Data Structures & Algorithms A+
INFO101 Foundations of Information Systems A-
MATH114 Discrete Mathematics 1 A
MGMT101 Introduction to Management B

If any of you have an opportunity of any sort I would appreciate you sending me a PM with contact details and I could get him to contact you. To meet the hours required he would be able to work part time during the Uni week anywhere in central Wellington and/or fulltime during the Uni holidays. He would prefer getting paid, but as the experience is the number one requirement he would consider working voluntarily if he had to i.e. for nil payrate (well he's still living at home so I'm feeding him eh!). Check out his website at http://bloopy.topcities.com

Otherwise if any one has any ideas or suggestions about who he should approach that would also be helpful if you PM me the details.

Sorry to grovel but...

Thank you in anticipation.

Thanks I've been away all weekend (since Thursday in fact - yippee) with my dirtbike so I'll PM you back tonight. By the time I battled my way down highway 1 last night and got home about an hour later than I was expecting because of the crash North of Otaki I read the message and thought I better leave it until I had time to reply properly and get the info from him.
