View Full Version : Laptop exploded
Last night I was syncing my phone with my laptop and the bloody thing went bang and filled the room with smoke. The smoke was coming out of the fan and the thing just died:crybaby:
Any techies here have any idea what might have happened? It is only a 3 month old Toshiba M50:Oi:
Of course I will be taking it back to where I got it from......bugger can't delete porn now:whistle:

Yes. It DIED.:slap:
If its only 3 months old, it will be under warranty still. The parts anyway.

Take it back and demand a brand new replacement...
Dont except it when they say to you that it needs to be fixed...
Quote the consumers act etc... then if no luck... tell them all about "Fair Go"
They will send it back to the manufacturers... but you are entitled to a brand new replacement or another comp to the value of the now broken one (Value of it when it was new)
You want a new one.
Dont worry about the 'porn' on the harddrive they are used to that stuff....lol.

Was the smoke 'pouring' out of the fan? If the fan died, the smoke would only kinda 'dribble' out as the fan wouldnt be working. Fans tend to make a bit of noise before dying too.

Your laptop put a jihad on you.
Lucky you bought it new and can get a replacment though!

Settle down woman! If you go around jumping up and down like an impotent maniac, quoting legalese and threatening people with "Fair go" everywhere you travel in life, I'd make a point of checking all my food for big snotty goobers.
Also, the word is "accept". Pffft, what an attitude...

Yeah jumping around and being aggro is the way to go when you want someone to help you out with something alright! jesus.

Sounds like a power supply thing, but if it goes "BANG" there's every chance it sent a power spike around a number of circuits that don't like power spikes (let's face it - who does) and it possibly took something else substantial with it (i.t. motherboard, memory cards, hard drive etc etc etc).
As a result you could experience multiple failures, either all right now, or possibly one now, one a bit later... one after that etc. It'll be a pain, unpredictable and you will lose data all over the show (1/2 way through something and your notebook died - that piece of work is a GONE burger)
Take it back to them, request a complete replacement (or the same model - you can't expect an upgrade... but don't rule it out if they offer one of course).

Go back and ask them nicely that you would like a replacement. If they say they will fix it, tell them you cannot wait because of something (make up an excuse) speak to a manager as usually they are the most helpful and know that if they do something wrong, they have the ways and means to hide it.
Hmmm, so the laptop went pop did it? Couldn't handle the high class porn me thinks, LOL

I dont think it would be a Fan.. they dont normally go 'bang' though capacitor's, resistors normally do. Take it back to where you purchased the device from.. If you want the data that was on the laptop then also request that you want the data on the hard-drive as well (they maybe able to recover it for you - though not the pron). If it was a new purchase, then its covered.
Good luck.
all electronic devices run on smoke... you release the smoke and they stop working!
keep the smoke in!!! :)

You going to really enjoy it when you take it in and they say it was caused by a power surge and is not covered by warranty.

Ahhhh, CaN has a point. Don't tell them you were syncing with anything....
If someone walked in quoting the consumers act to me I'd tell them to go to hell and let my boss deal with it. Walking into a retail store acting like an arsehole is not going to get you anywhere fast so I'd ignore crahse's advice dont go flying off the hook and im sure you'll get someone who's more than willing to help you even if it is just to say im sorry.....its a user issue

Don't worry, if it was bad enough then the files might be corrupted. But that is a possiblity you could loose everything :slap:

Yeh that is what I am worried about. It definately wasn't the fan as it had only been on for about 10mins and wasn't working hard. I think the CPU has basically melted. I wonder if home and contents would cover a power spike?
I will take it in today and let you guys know the outcome. Either way I will not be happy if they try and repair it because I will put money on it that it will have damaged other parts.
Bloody flatmates thought it was the biggest joke ever as none of them had seem anything like it. I have my suspicions that it was the pointless drivel thread that tipped it over the edge:chase:

You could just tell them it wasnt plugged in to the wall, or the phone. The phone isnt going to fry it though. The USB (?) port PSU would shut itself down if it was being stressed.
Just mention underated bypass-capacitors and see what they say ;). Motherboards on desktop computers have had them for a couple of years (although not anymore Im sure).
maybe saying that it was running off the battery at the time will get rid of any issues that it may have been a power spike
You didnt happen to have it sitting on something soft like carpet or a blanket did you? A lot of laptops rely on having airflow underneath them in order to prevent them overheating. The little feet on the bottom arent just there to leave dents in your lap. And modern laptops (especially those not running something like the centrino technology) quickly generate a lot of heat, even more so when their airflow is cut off.

Toshiba's agent will more than likely repair it, the repair will be as good as any new machine. Especially since it's a laptop, where nearly everything is on the mainboard anyway. They are under no obligation to replace with a brand new unit.

The psu is external on laptops so it wouldn’t of been that which made the noise. I worked fixing Toshiba laptops for 2 years incl doing board level repairs. If it made a bang sound the CPU has most likely exploded, it happens when they get to hot i.e. fan failure if you take the heat sync off like this pro http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5393904704265757054&q=cpu
Capacitors can also explode but they make more of a popping noise. Good news is your HDD is most likely fine (unless it was a ticking noise that it made), you could remove it, there will be a screw on the bottom of your laptop to take off a plastic cover then the hdd will slide right out, then you will need to go to a computer shop and buy a 2.5" hdd to usb cattie. Then u can plug it into the usb drive on a computer and get all your porn off for safe keeping. Bad news is that it will possibly cost more then buying a whole new laptop to repair.

well it all seems some of you have taken me the wrong way...
If you have no luck in getting a replacement you are entitled under the consumers act to get a replacement.
I did not say to rant and rave at the little person behind the counter...
Sure maybe I should have said ask for the Manager of the store and speak to them... my mistake for not saying that in my post.
But if all else fails in getting a replacement... then for sure contact Fair Go and they will help out..
sheesh... you guys...

Unless it's the power supply that went bang, in which case it's pretty hard to claim the battery did it...
Check up and down the road and see if anyone else has anything go bang too. If it was a big power spike the power co should stump up the readies.

If you have no luck in getting a replacement you are entitled under the consumers act to get a replacement.
If memory serves, under the Consumer Guarantees Act the three R's kick in.
Repair, Refund or Replace (as the choice of the vendor).
If they elect to repair and those repairs are not completed within a satisfactory timeframe (like we know what THAT means), you can then escalate it and request a replacement.
One thing at a time. I would voice concerns about various components being cooked/fried and otherwise redecorated, but banging your hand on the desk is a really good way to go to the back ot of the Queue (as per Crashe's 2nd post).
Warning - I'm a bush lawyer. Anyone out there with the absolute word on this? Opinions are nice but don't tend to stand up in the face of someone that actually knows the rules.
