Thinking about sewing some old leathers onto the inside of a pair of jeans and a "civvy" jacket, plenty of stitching, even include inserts for some armour. Much cheaper than actual draggins...

Anyone tried it before? Thoughts on the idea?

Have thought about it before but the jeans themselves are likely to rip where there is no leather. Jean stitching is not made for crashes in order to have protection the whole inside would need to be covered in leather. Besides by the time you buy a decent pair of jeans you can spend at least a hundred bucks you might as well spend the extra and get something you know will work as I wouldnt want to have a crash and find out that your jeans don't work.

Imagine your jeans exploding when you hit the ground at 50km/h (apparently it happens). Leather inserts will just mean fewer pieces.

Shift Kevlar jeans are only about $160. Look better, maybe as good as Draggin (maybe not quite).

I don't know about the exploding part but they do rip down the seems nicely if you hit the ground or car at the right angle

From what I can see, draggins are the same, just pieces of kevlar fabric sewn into standard jeans, so it those don't rip, mine shouldn't either right?

As far as I know those sorts of jeans have kevlar woven through the denim fabric as well as an extra lining of kevlar.

Are they not are kevlar stitched as well as kevlar woven into the fabric?

I know the Shift Jeans have kevlar woven into the fabric. The Draggins dont (I dont think) but arent designed to rip though.

10x better than standard jeans anyway.

Where were you in the '90's? It was trendy then to patch sew leather over jeans, sometimes the whole lot, sometimes just parts leaving the jeans showing.Couldn't see the point myelf, and it looked dorky anyway....although I still have a patchwork vest I sometimes wear....

Mate, looked at your occupation on your profile, surely you can afford a bit safety of kit?!! :)

If not, knock out a couple of sprogs and get Aunty Helen to pay for some draggins courtesy of Working for Families.

Been done before and sure enough ended in pain. If you don't wish to protect yaself, then go for it. Personally, Ive lost enough skin and draggins are my bare minimium.:ride:

It'll be fine. You don't have to crash so safety or protection won't be an issue.

What I meant was please don't. Good idea in theory but in practice they rip, bad! And friends don't let friends get hurt. I crashed in a pair of patch sewn jeans (in 1992 before you smart asses give me heaps) and they self destructed.

Although if done right they should work, test it out first - make them put them on a manakin tie to a rope and through out of car at 100k's see how they hold up. And video it.

I'll volunteer to video it, and I'll post it too.

I still have a pair of jeans with leather patched outside from the knees up - but too 'large' to fit them now:no: :pinch: :weep:

Dunno if they would have done any good but they looked kewl :headbang:  - and were warmer than just denim.

It's really disapointing the way leather shrinks so much - my vest has shrunk so much it looks like my gut is exploding out of it!

Leathers plus jeans = one fat arse :moon: :killingme - if I were you I'd rather wear one well-made layer than two makeshift ones!
