Biker busted over drive-off petrol thefts
15 May 2006 By MERVYN DYKES
Levin police believe they have put the brakes on a freeloading "easy-rider" who has bilked service stations out of more than $3000 in petrol.
Sergeant Brian Yanko said the man, who was pulled over in a routine check on State Highway 57 near Levin about 11.50pm on Sunday, at first confessed to a single instance of driving off from a service station without paying for petrol, but under closer questioning he allegedly owned up to between 50 and 60 drive-offs throughout the North Island, averaging $50-$80 at a time. "We come down pretty heavily on this sort of thing," said Sgt Yanko. "There has been a real spate of this type of offence here - but perhaps we have just cut it back by half at one blow." A 24-year-old Levin man will appear in Levin District Court to answer the charges on May 18.

Now I know it ain't beemer, the goose tank holds about $20 of the good stuff. And I'm thinking that much fuel means a big (~1000cc) bike, that only leaves about five KBs in levin.
Fess up, I'll got a spare MTA voucher to get ya to the courthouse. :mega:

LMAO a couple young uns in Palmy thought they had this "petrol driveoff " thingy all sussed the other day......... they took their numberplates off.... filled up their car ... drove off ......
Garage called cops... who were the rare wise variety and they immediately done some areas of the close backstreets...... found them about 2 blocks away putting the plates back on the car LMAO
Sheesh ,.... someone nominate them for the wally of the week award LMAO:stupid:
i just wanna know how you can fit "$50-$80" of gas into a bike and drive off, i struggle to put $20 in.... do bigger bikes have bigger tanks?

At $1.70 litre, and a dry fumey tank
Kawasaki ZZR-1100 ~ 24 L (~6.3 US gal) = $40.80
XV1100 Virago Special ~ 16.66 L (4.4 gal) = $28.32
Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade ~ 18.16 litres (4.80 gal) = $30.87
HD FLHCU1 Ultra Classic Electra Glide ~18.9 L (standard HD tank) = $32.13
May have been a trike with a VW tank? Or the petrol is really expensive in Levin?

I never really thought about it before, the most I've pumped into my ZZR is around $25 at today's prices. I've never hit reserve before and now I realise I'm only letting it get 3/4 empty. Next time I go up the line I'll get to Turangi before filling, always filled up in Waiouru.
Cheers for that.

Boss hoss 502 has an 8.5 gallon tank.
That works out to 32L, so an empty tank on the boss hoss works out to 55 dollars.
But if he could buy a boss hoss he could pay for petrol

If he had a Boss Hoss he would have been caught long ago.

Mmn, methinks you took liberties with the headline on this story Kjell! "Motorist busted over drive-off petrol thefts" - not biker!
You were right though, it wasn't me, the last time I filled the Goose (wasn't quite empty) it took $17. The husband's R100RS takes about $43 though - but it wasn't him either! I filled the car recently and it cost $61 - including the 10c per litre discount from New World. :crybaby:
