Are we too hard on newbies..? In the last little while there have been a couple of newbies here that have been given a bit of a roasting. Ok so I'm one of the ones giving the shit. Is it just the manner in which they're introducing themselves? Grisdale is one recently that springs to mind...

Maybe it's a pack mentality thing - If you're new and you turn up here and post something that a couple of people may think isn't that good should you expect to get crucified for it? Should you just expect to take your licks and harden up?

The way I see it is that this place is a biker site. It's not a creche, it's not a dating service, it's not a porn site - it's a bikers site for bikers (and most bikers are not pansy's). People give each other shit round here all the time and if ya can't laugh about it - then ya must have a pretty sad life...

Horny 21yr old: Wanna go out on a date?
Me: Wanna punch in the face?
Just an impolite way of saying NO really. I dont think it was mean, I was just being me and anyone that knows me knows thats what im like. And anyway the tone of the "conversation" wasnt exactly any different to that. I thought I was being nastier when I posted the lyrics to Desperado, funny how people read/see thing differently huh?!

Morale of the story is, if you post crap you get crap, don't expect to talk about Barney and Friends and have people take it seriously and discuss their favorite episodes.
Its like the newbies who post a "Hello" and write shit like:
hi lyk mi name is john
i rid a 2fifty n lokun 4 ppl 2 race
Anyone with a half pie functioning brain will browse around first and establish a 'grasp' of the type of people frequenting this forum.

I think he just needs to sit down with a nice large hot mug of get hard.
Funny, I kinda read into the first post that, in a subtle way, he was asking why it is that people feel the need to be rude and beligerant. Maybe I was just reading between the lines too much . . . but anyway, I have read some of the posts on here and wondered what sort of mentality is behind them. I'm not saying that you have to treat people with kid gloves (hell no), but I dont see any need to give them crap simply because you're a "local" here and they are just a newbie. Most people that have been here a while have evovled in their style of posting from when they first started, but picking on someone fresh onto the site doesnt really allow them to transform much, other than to become bitter and twisted.
Maybe this is all just a metaphor for life really, people these days go on about getting respect, but how can they expect it themselves if they don't show it to others?

Good point but personally I don't see it as that, or at least that is not my approach.
If someone (new or otherwise) says something that sounds cocky, dickheady or otherwise, so be it. If they get a response negative or positive that is just the way it is.

Agreed. There's a few people in here that come across as all talk.
Also, everyone here gets hassled for their choice in bike. I get hassled for having a spaghetti slurper, and surely you have seen the amount of hassles Honda riders get! Gixxers, R6's, everyone gets given greif about their choice in ride. But that tends to be fairly good natured. What irks me are the purely vindictive comments that some people seem to enjoy dishing out. Its just childish really.

f'rinstance .. my 'intent' in my somewhat imaginative use of the written word is a perhaps-poor attempt to overcome the limitations of words on paper [or whatever] and add texture, colour and humour........ thus [hopefully] bringing my posts nearer to speach and the body-visual signals usually available when people speak face-to-face.

No, No, mstriumph. Your post didn't offend me in the slightest. My beef was with people who insist on writing in TXT for no purpose other than that they are lazy. That is why I wrote
but I feel that deliberate misuse of language without purpose is an insult to the reader.
I do recognise that it is often neccessary to enhance the written word to give additional emphasis, and I appreciate the effort most people go to. In these circumstances the deliberate misuse of language does have purpose. It is the use of TXT in this enviroment that I feel is an insult.
