What about the road spending?
I hope their budgeting for that includes sweeping up afterwards

What about the road spending?
Spending on land transport - mainly new roads - will rise by almost half, from around 0.9 per cent to around 1.3 per cent of the national income, in the next three years.

Message to parents: It IS OK TO LET YOUR KIDS WALK TO SCHOOL.

There are no more abductions of kids today than there was when I was at school. 99.9999% chance they will be SAFE! You walked to school and turned out ok! Get over it, you are teaching your kids to take the car wherever they go, they are not getting daily forced exercise and they are getting FAT.

And you'll help solve our road congestion problems! <mutter mutter mutter>

Oh, and fat people just need reminding that the feed hole up top is bigger than the out hole down bottom.

I agree with the "tax the fast food joints". Arn't they already doing that in France or somewhere European?

I'm a skinny little shit and don't like the idea of my tax money going towards helping people diet...

Putting money into helping people eat right is a good thing - it's got to be cheaper on society than pouring money into liposuction or similar when they start tipping the scales at 200kgs.

That being said - a fat tax???

GO FOR IT!

i have anaylised this and have de-coded its hidden message

* The Government will spend $76 million over the next four years on a campaign for healthy eating to stem obesity.

actually means

* Have you seen the price of gas? My Merc is costing $112 to fill and I'm using 2 tanks a week, the only way to get good mpg is to sit at 150 and the traffic is almost stopped. How are we going to afford expensive strippers and the newest merc if we have to pay $1.70 odd of gas. We need a pay raise but we can't be too obvious, so we are going to take pitty on the patty munchers an say we want to help them, stash $76 and hey presto, pay raises for the next 4 years. Hows that sound???

"Agreed"

Sweet,.

* The Government will spend $76 million over the next four years on a campaign for healthy eating to stem obesity.

Well, considering Half the adult populations of NZ and a Third of NZ children are obese it can't be a bad thing!!!

Hell, if someone wants to be obese, I say let them be. I don't know why everyone is obsessed with protecting people from themselves.

Same with seat belts, I personally think once someone is 18 or over they can choose to wear seat belts. I personally would wear them at all times, and make sure that anyone that I care about would too, but why the hell should be INFORCE a law to protect people from themselves?

I agree with promoting healthy eating at school, not having fast food restaurants near schools etc but once they grew up, they can do whatever they like and take the consequences.

People just don't need to be rapped up in a big bubble wrap once they reach an age where they can be responsible for their own actions.

I used to work at Wendy's Constallation drive... it was still too expensive...

Hell, I'm fucking addicted to it now, everytime I go up to auckland, I stuff my face in it.....

is there something wrong with me????

Key points from today's Budget

True to its word, the Labour Government has poured money into roading and the elderly rather than cut taxes in its seventh Budget today.

Spending on land transport - mainly new roads - will rise by almost half, from around 0.9 per cent to around 1.3 per cent of the national income, in the next three years.

Residential care and home-based support for the elderly will get $126 million extra over the next four years.

Other main points of the Budget are:

* The budget surplus, after allowing for accounting changes, will shrink from $7 billion in 2005-06 to $5.8 billion in the coming year, bottoming at $3.6 billion in 2008-09. That's a drop from 4.5 per cent of the national income to 3.6 per cent and 2 per cent.

* Tax rates are unchanged.

* Economic growth is forecast to slow to 1.5 per cent both this year and next year, before recovering to 3.7 per cent in 2007-08.

* Jobs will shrink by 0.2 per cent in the coming year and unemployment will rise to 4.7 per cent.

* Money will be poured into areas aimed at "transforming" the economy from commodities to high-value products, with big boosts for science, export marketing and the Venture Investment Fund, as well as roading.

* Modern apprentice numbers will increase to 14,000 by the end of 2008.

* The Budget implements Labour's $1 billion election promise to scrap interest on student loans, and raises the parental income threshold for the full student allowance from $35,000 a year to $39,270.

* The Government will spend $76 million over the next four years on a campaign for healthy eating to stem obesity.

* Promised "school-ready" health checks for four-year-olds, improved school dental services and newborn hearing tests are implemented.

* A 10-year buildup in defence spending announced last year will continue with a $73 million increase this year.

It's better to invest the dollar in Telecom, and if anything happens to the cup, blame it on someone and get the tax payers to recoup losses

you're telling me. The local school (across the road from my house), about 90% of children a driven to school by soccer mums. And 99% of the children live within 2km of the school.

I used to walk 4km to school, there was a bus originally, but when i was old enough to not complain i was told to walk - didnt take that long to get home if there was a good movie on sky in the afternoon.

Inbred - We are a small island full of very strange, knuckle dragging, uneducated, rather odd looking people.

Peasants - Unemployed Kiwi's that don't have a single thought of their own who meaninglessly wander the country in search of handouts.

Translation not needed. Communists know about peasants.

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. 2002.

peasant

A farmer or agricultural worker of low status. The word is applied chiefly to agricultural workers in Asia, Europe, and South America, who generally adhere to traditional agricultural practices and have little social mobility or freedom. 1

Being , as it were, proto-capitalists, only interested in increasing the value of their farms and selling the produce thereof at higher prices (which is why they are unlikely to vote labour) , it is necessary, for the good of the revolution, to collectivise them.

Historically the peasantry evolved into the yeomanry, and are antipathetically opposed to the bourgoisie (that's you, of course).

They've advertised for years to encourage people to stop smoking, how effective has that been, making it hard to smoke in public and price increase have probably made the biggest difference ......

You are the sum total of a sheltered kiwi and don't have a single thought of your own. It is not your country, it is ours. I don't need to meet you to pass judgment - actions speak volumes. You have already failed in life, hence your preference for the safety net of socialism. You're full of ideology, indoctrinated from your upbringing and poor education. You are a non achiever and envious of people that succeed. You have given up all hope of achieving anything great in life and settle for mediocrity. You are not capable of making decisions for yourself and want to be guided in life. You lack responsibility and accountability. You really don't care about this country at all. You are selfish and should be kept away from young boys and small animals.

In short, we have nothing in common. You could say that we share a common interest in biking however I am in it for the passion. You ride a bike because you can't afford a car. The reasons are explained above.

You are the reason I don't pay tax.

Not so fast Mr Marxist, but stay with me here, you'll like where it's going. I've lost hope for this country. No party impresses me. Act was once close, but god forbid that we should be responsible for our own lives.

I'm beginning to think that Kiwi's need something really radical. Since it is obvious we are happy being told how to run our lives, that we know no better, I think communism is the only answer. I think it's perfect for NZ and funnily enough, will acheive the same outcome of capitalism (but it'll just take longer to get there)

The jury is still out on Don being a fool but it's a fact that Helen is a self interested idealist that is shagging the country.

Now after slagging Maori..........the Nats are now talking to them as a future coalition partner; you think the foreshore is a done deal.........yep you're right, vote for the Nats and the foreshore 'will' be a done deal.

There is serious talk about the privatisation of the roads. Not in the media but this has been discussed. In simple terms it's philosohy runs similer to the railways. The railways carry freight and are a privatre entitiy. Why can not that be applied to the roading system that also carries freight. That's the think with the some Nats.

For those of you who think the country is fucked and that Helen and her lot can not be trusted...............here's a little reminder. Brash is a banker...............that's on par with a snake oil salesman. Remember the Westpac strike. That's the bank whose emplees were 'bonused' for getting you deeper into hock.
