A bunch of us Aucklanders are planning to head down to Welly and try thoes roads for ourselves as well. We'll let you guys know when we can come so maybe we can arrange for a group ride?

I'll time myself from Whanga turn off to kopu again this weekend and see if I can get any better time. Hopefully this time we won't get half of Auckland return home in their cars, trailers etc etc :argh:

Of course that was at the speed limit, etc. ;)

In a cage or bike??? How did the test riding go???In a cage....It is about 20 odd secs slower than the R1 was - the bike can truly haul down the straights - but the car can corner quicker (was in a 4WD Turbo)

Best time on the R1 was 9'47" - mint day tho - really dry and I had RS2's on and needed to change my undies at the other end. The VTR was quicker tho coz I knew it better than the R1

PS - this is from the bridge just short of Kaitoke Gardens to the Twin Bridges.

Guys - just don't do what I did and bin it......

I won't tell you the time I have done it in my old VR4.....that was just a nasty nasty car.....3am in the morning - absolutely no traffic and you could see heads lights coming - so it was like a closed road rally.

Fuck - I just had an epiphany - I now know why I feel off. hahahahahahaha

I may be wrong, but I have an idea that back in the "good old days", the likes of Robert Holden, Peter Fleming, Dave Barrett and the Hiscocks got it down to around 7 minutes?

Someone who was around and knew them better than me may like to correct me.

I guy I knew in Upper Hutt claimed to do 8 mins bridge to bridge on a Norton Combat Commando. But he was a bullshitter about everything else, so I took that with a large grain of salt. Had the first 750 Mach IV in U/H. Last name Wallis.
Having said that, though, the road was far less congested (no logging trucks for a start) and the police presence was a lot lighter 30 years ago - and the Hiscock brothers were very good

The road was better 10-20 years ago. Much, much better. It's a rutted, bumpy, badly surfaced, crappy piece of congested junk now.

pete376403
19th May 2004, 12:47
Far less cars and trucks (take away all the logging trucks for a start), road surface might have been better (less truck damage), etc. Even the petrol was higher quality back then.
OTOH tyres were nowhere near as good as they are now, frames had several hinges built in, suspension was crap (think of Honda FVQ (aka Fade Very Quickly) shocks on rollerdoors.

Anyway, I wasn't moking your roads. I am dead keen on comming down and trying it for myself. I was just trying to imply the discription of a sterotypical marrige life as a joke, since you had mentioned husband/wife to compare with the road.

Yeah right! With the marvels of modern technology they could light a bonfire, send up some smoke signals and have their mates ping you at the end. You're trapped like a rat in a pipe on this stretch of road. I guess you could always hide in a culvert or in the dunnies by the tearooms for a few hours...

Well then - let's log times, keep a tally and record the improvements people make

Mine: (all largely traffic free runs)
Cage 10'05".9
R1 9'47" and change
VTR 9'13"

VTR I found was better as was less violent out of corners, good torque, geared well and mainly I knew it infinitely better than the R1......and before you ask - yes this behaviour is most likely why I fell off.

Have only been on this road once when Deano & Jimbo took me on it when I went down there for a day ride . Nice bit of road I thought , always hard when you are learning it as you ride it but would be keen to try the RSVR on it . Don't know where the 2 bridges are to know how far in K's you travel but sounds like some fast riding even from one side to the other .

If you have time to work a stop watch you are either going too slow or not paying attention to what you should be concentrating on.
Poos must have borrowed a Bugatti. No make that a helicopter.
Hang on, bridge to bridge in 5 minutes. Poos are talking about 5 minutes to do a U-turn in a car from the northbound single lane bridge to the southbound single lane bridge next to each other! That's 5 minutes to travel about 2 metres - about right for the speed some cars do over that hill.
Hey I'm taking the piss. We shouldn't be laying down challenges with race times on a pubic road. That's why I ride at a very sedate pace over that annoyingly twisty road. I can't wait until all the corners are gone then we can race on it.
