View Full Version : Cattle truck adds more bite to the Takas

The wannabe members of the Rimutaka Weekend Biker Hoons Association would like to extend their sincerest thanks to a member of the livestock distribution industry.
The LDI member skillfully piloted their specially equipped B-train over SH2 Rimutaka Hill this morning around 11.30. Although the writer has been unable to verify the exact makeup of the load, it can be assumed that the truck was carrying livestock of some description. This livestock proceeded to fully unload themselves all the way from Featherston southbound to Kaitoke. Intersections on River Rd, Upper Hutt suggest the livestock had an extra helping of wheaties before they left home this morning too.
Motorcyclists who cannot trace heritage to Mr V Rossi are advised to be ready for additional entertainment while traversing the more technical sections of the Rimutaka Hill in the southbound lane. Those who are still trying to get technical on Kaitoke and River Road deserve the ticket, chase and/or crash.
WELL DONE MR TRUCK DRIVER.

Probably rode close to if not my quickest up the hill today from Featherston following Uncle B who graciously rode slow enough to allow me to keep up. Dafe reackoned he got his knee down for the first time (we thought he'd banged his slider on the garage door as he left this morning). Not too slippery at all MB.
I think the hill got a second dosing today, there was a nice trail there yesterday going north and south.
Don't expect to see me riding up front with my happy happy joy joy abundance of demerits. I need someone to ride shotgun up front to clear the road of undesirables. In fact my helmet receiver battery died about then and I felt naked without the radar.

Hey Jim2, there is enough shit on our roads now without your rellies sending any more of it down here.
It seems to me the whole country is becoming one great big streak of cow shit!
Bikers pay more ACC and truckies and cow cockies just keep on creating hazards for us. Bloody LTSA wankers.
They drop shit, we drop bikes and "we" get to pay more for the privilege! Beats me, John.

Me too. I was running late to meet up with rfc85 in Featherston. I passed a cop outside the Speedway, he was giving a cager a ticket. The Kaitokes was done with little hesitation, followed by a complete slaughtering of the hill. My new Conti's are looking second hand as a result. Best part of the ride was the descent into Featherston, Fastest I can remember going down that side before. At the bottom, a cop, handing a ticket to a cager.

Funny you should mention that...I had a bit of a play on the Kaimai's yesterday & enjoyed the descent more than going up. There was cowshit everywhere too but that comes with the cow moving season. Highways or backroads, you cant really avoid it at this time of year.:shit:

Yep, second that, it was a brilliant day to out on two wheels. Those new gixxers do look bloody nice from behind with those stubby mufflers.
Are we lucky or what having roads like that to ride. Really impressed with your riding style Bruce- smooth, flowing lines at a fast pace. Best not mention the pace.
Every time I ride my bike I fall in love with it all over again. Seems it was made to wheelie. I was rapped with that long one today, could have gone all day if it hadn't been for the corner. That was a par 4 and par 5 fairway, I think, all on one wheel. Jimbo's got the new bike sorted for wheelies too.
Thanks for the company.

Just in time.Sounds like they may have run out by now.... will you use a tanker? Make sure some of our south of the mainland friends get their share too??
Seriously though, I started a thread on this very subject a few weeks ago.
Regarding the stock trucks between Auckland and Whangarei in mid summer and the way they use to stick hoses out the sides of the trucks and all the dried poo that would fly back. I was with a riding mate on the way to Akl on his mint XS650Special, it was about 1979, which he intended to sell and he got wasted by poo and wasn't very happy. Had to clean the bike up big time before sale. Oh well, suppose the current rain will help wash the muck off the road.

I'm with madboy and oldrider on this one.
Have seen a few instances of illegal effluent dumping in recent weeks. I presume there are local District Council laws on this ??
Next time I see this happening I will be sure to record it on camera. I suggest the rest of us do the same and report it.

Unfortunately he's not taking the piss. If there wasn't shit on the road before Jimbo punched a hole through a perfectly fine fence there almost was afterwards.
One sec he's barrowing along trying to keep my front wheel from mating with his rear wheel, we're both getting that adrenaline rush, as you do at the bottom of the hill about to head up (my favourite bit too). Next thing I'm watching Jimbo and one very tidy new bike doing the head over heels tango. Practicing for dancing with stars maybe?
I gave it my best shot to run him over but missed. He's a slippery target when he's sliding on his arse. But seriously it's a gut wrenching moment seeing someone go down in front of you. Bike and rider uprooted a 6" round fence post! Left it dangling in the air attached by 1/8 wires. Colin Meads will have to replant it.
So up he gets, leathers falling to pieces and we drag said bike back out to check out the new streetfighter look. I think it was all a plan to avoid buying the group a round at the Rimutaka pub. We had one for you anyway Jimbo and put it on your bill.
To anyone out there I say ditch those bloody Bridgestones before they ditch you. I have to blame the tyres before he figures out I gave him a nudge.

I’m not sure what the story is in the north island but what I have noticed in some cases down here in the south [Dunedin to oamaru anyway] is the effluent stops are built after the weigh bridges. The truck and trailers could be carrying possibly a couple of tonne or more of shit which in some cases would put them over weight. To get around this problem they just leave the shit bungs open. In some cases of course it is probably just laziness on the part of the driver.

When I get the bike back on the road the beers are on me. If I replaced all the plastic myself it would only cost around $1000, so not too bad all up. Seems Suzuki plastic is pretty cheap.

I think you're onto something there:sherlock: As with any job, you will get the lazy bastards who couldn't give a shit, and the rest. With modern stock trucks and more effluent stops there is no reason for them to be spilling shit all over the roads but the older stock crates do tend to be messy. Last week on my afternoon school run we were stopped at Malfroy rd lights which has a shopping center in spitting distance. There's only a footpath between the cattle trucks and the door of the chinese take away. A cow then opened up & pissed & shit all over the gutter and I swear it splashed all over the chinese shop & the hairdresser's windows.
There's only one thing worse than getting stuck behind a shitty stocktruck in the rain.....binning on your fav twisties because of shit on the road. Bummer for you jimbo600. Glad you're ok, hope others take heed & ride carefully.

The content of the shit tanks wouldn't make the truck go over weight, as the shit would weigh pretty much the the same whether it is inside or outside the animal.
Livestock get lighter... shit tanks get heavier...
If the truck is over weight with full shit tanks then it must have also been over weight when it was loaded.
Any way, that is no excuse.

Sorry to hear about your accident Jimbo. When I originally scanned the thread I thought you meant that the bike matched the scenery due to its additional cow poo image ,green and brown. Didnt read it properly. The 600 class seems cursed from the number of members whom seem to come off them. I had a close call a few weekends ago in that area with something unseen, perhaps oil, which took me by surprise so its often something you cant do much about. What I wanted to ask since I believe we have a number of Rimatuka experts onsite is this..... Has anyone actually gone off the edge going up the hill northbound? I nearly got blown over one year coming around a bend and the wind was roaring down one of the gullies near the top.
For anyone not familar with this gorge, there are often wind warnings and trucks regularly get tipped over due to severe gusts. Imagine what happens to bike riders if they hit one of those gusts, and its a longggggg way down to the bottom off the side. Glad you are OK. PS ITS BLOODY FREEZING OUTSIDE. Anyone would have to be mad to hit the gorge today.
Uncle B
5th June 2006, 12:32
For wind, the northbound Kaitoke side isn't too bad until the last few corners at the top. It's the Wairarapa side that is bad on a windy day.
On the way up or down, on the Rapa side, some of the outside corners the wind can push you around a bit. Have found that a bit of speed will help you 'drive' through the gusts....but you have to be ready for them.
Have been with others that have had close calls due to the wind gusts.

That's the true measure of the 'hill experts', we always make sure we crash into the hill rather than over the drop!
Five years ago I proved that gorse is indeed our friend. Far softer landing than rock :dodge: . Well I thought so in my leathers and helmet. The 3 Blokes in shorts and jandals that foolishly offered to help me extract my bike weren't pouring praise on the wonders of gorse that I was.

An old Rimutaka has been on a crusty 17 year old bike shouldn't give you too many problems eh, I spose the 1st and last of you I'll see is when you are wheelieing out of the twin bridges rise onto those fast straight bits at the bottom, see I've already bought out the excuse book.
Would it be considered cheating if I bought the 9 along in the van?

For that matter, I wouldn't mind trying out the KX500 Motard bike while I'm at it! :devil2:
Turns out my original jetting guesses were right, I ended up tracing the bike hitting a wall at 8k to the valve clearances tightening up in pot number 2, and all it took was over ten tests/test rides taking the seat tank n shit off and dicking with carbs n electrics and air filters right through that night.
The shocks coming out tomorrow for it's 1st rebuild, gotta love old bikes hehe
I enjoy riding it though, so I'm looking forward to finally getting on it when it is fully sorted for the 1st time since buying it.

Sorry to hear you gave your Suzy carpet burns Jim-bob. Bit scary really, me a friend had gone out the back way to Pahaitua from Alfredton & stopped a little long for a feed & realised the sun was sinking so we made a B line for home as fast as we were prepared to travel on a long weekend (only to be humiliatingly passed by some HoglyDogly riders, but I’m guessing these particular fellows have an understanding with the Police).
So we get to the hill & have a rather spirited crossing to get through before we lose all light, dark visors up & all that. But pouring poo on the ground could have taken anyone off & is hard to see in the twilight. Maybe enough cars had cleaned most of it.
At times of the year the SI looks like it is connected by brown stains. Well if we do ever get CJD or Foot & mouth here we are doing our best to spread it far & wide aren’t we?
& Little Johnny get $4 for cleaning the car after a trip in the country, what is he cleaning off?
We should have safe food & ethical production practices, not dangerous ones:angry:
If this adds to the cost of beef, then so be it. It is a real cost.

Damn Jimbo, Sorry to hear dude. To think I'd only just laid eyes on the beast hours before.
I hope your fairing pricing is better than mine.
I replaced my left hand side tail at $300. and Wellington motorcycles quoted me $900 for a 1/2 piece of the main left hand side body fairing.
I was thinking the fairings are freakin expensive. Hope the 600 is a different story.
Anyway, there's alot less fairing on the 600 thankfully.
Be sure to check out ebay though, I brought pretty much all my replacement parts from ebay when I had my crash at Manfield.
There are heaps of race teams in the US stripping down new bikes and swinging the fairings on trademe. Be sure to check out some sliders too.

Fatjim - You're a farkin wanker! I was so down when you said Uncle B had crashed my bike, that even when he turned up on it fine, I was still feeling down!
Perhaps Fatjim, You'd like some mentoring on how to get your kneedown, bitch!
I wouldn't have wasted any time feeling sorry for myself. After all you'd be OK and Fatjim would still be, well, fat!

Uncle B - Whats with the "Bling on Biscuit thin tyres?" Let's not turn this into a 180 vs 190 thread! Otherwise we'll be here so long, you'll have turned to dust while I'll be putting on the ole alpinestars!
Bloody fuck how much for plastic??? Insurance are paying anyway mate so I don't care where the parts come from.
I'll definately be getting different tyres and frame sliders when the bike is back on the road.

Indeed, it is not often. I did feel sorry for the cagers you bardged your way past just to beat me up the hill. I was just hanging back and watching the show.
Wish I was there to see the look on Dafe's face. :gob:

Also, For the short-term..... My money is on the Zen Master on his 9! See ya at Manfield for round 2 (17th).
Thanks for the endorsement Dafe, They say never bring a knife to a gun fight, but call me a glutton for punishment, I'll be bringing the 750 for my mission on the Takas.
The last time I had a serious bash at the hill was 4 years back on a NC24. (see post 11 on the following thread) http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=30517
I think I read somewhere you like to take pics? Since you will be coming to Manfield for round 2, I can get you into the middle of the track for better photos (if you don't already get in there) I'm keen to get some pics for a promo I'm doing for a new sponsor....
Cheers man!

Just did the brass and the amount of shite on the SI roads was twice that of the north. The hills south of Blenheim were green all over.

You want Andy to tell you that all that green & brown shit wasn't actually shit?. The term utterly useless mouthpiece comes to mind every time I see that git on telly.
