View Full Version : Are you an urban hoon?
SpankMe
4th June 2006, 15:09
I have to admit I ride like a total hoon on my GB. I don’t know what it is about small bikes that make me tear up the streets and treat cages like mobile chicanes. For my SV, I would have to choose option 2, but my GB is a café “racer” and that’s how I ride it around Auckland, to the sounds of horns and hand gestures from cagers.
A transformation happens when I jump from the SV to the GB. Speed limits, passing procedures (left or right side, whatever presents itself), following distance and cornering speeds become mere suggestions.
Have you ever had this happen? You’re stopped at the lights or shopping center and a cager you passed awhile ago gets out of his cage, walks up to you on your bike, and tells you that “you will die soon if you keep riding like that”. “Well shit dude, I’m almost 40 and have been riding like this all my life. When is this event supposed to happen?”
i get the "you bloody idiot" look from older people sometimes, mainly due to the exhaust.
i just shut the dark visor and head back on my way ;)

I try to teach fellow road users the basics of etiquette as I see it where possible. This can involve putting myself at risk of prosecution as a result, but someone's gotta do it.
Givin' cagers the learn on an urban road near you.
Went past you yesterday heading from st helliers... you are a fellow hoon too :D
Hehehe.
Edit: sorta stuck between the two.. depends really.

I ride however I please. I went for 2 as it's more how I see it. But others probably think my "commuting" is their "nuts", and we don't even want to get started on how I ride when the cops are chasing me...

This was a hard Poll for me, as I do not live near any urban areas! Thinking about it, I should of picked option number 3, as I always go 59 km's or less through townships for financial reasons, though my license is squeeky clean.
Show me a winding country road though.......hmmmm and if I were on a supermoto bike, my personality would change in urban areas for sure lol

So that's option 2 then? I try and stay at legal speeds in town myself. I bitch and winge about cagers going through town at 80 so I don't see why bikers should be exempt.
Ixion
4th June 2006, 18:29
If a Gb500 has that effect on you, do not at all costs ever get a two smoker. I have assumed there is an implicit "except for two strokes" clause in all the poll options. I do not think that any motorcyclist should be held responsible for his actions when under the influence of two stroke smoke.

To me, 59km's indicated is legal, allowing for optimistic speedometer error (thanks acc sign) and tolerance level of the law being 10 or 11km's so to my way of thinking I'm in the lawful zone. I'm a little confused as to what your point is in regards to your quote on my post?

I'm usually a nana, except when i'm running late then I don't mind turning up the wick a bit. To be honest, i'm usually in autopilot around town and on the motorway. Usually the brain only gets switched on properly when i'm out in the country.

I mostly ride responsibly but sometimes when in the mood I flog the poor VTZ of Doom like shes a rented mule. Love to stick it to smart arse lane hogging cagers, haven't had one try to aproach me yet.
Cant think of anything clever to defend my frequent need to ride round town like an arsehole.
But have to mention how tough MADBOY sounds when he says he rides option two style in his opinion, then implies the rest of us will think he's crazy.:apumpin:

I answered with (2) as I believe most of what I do is reasonably safe.
However, the local police have taken issue at times with this, and I'm currently bearing the brunt of that, having been stopped and lectured and ticketed for my urban riding practices. Around the 'burbs I'm a nana, but there's something about all that rush hour traffic that just makes you want to cane it through the middle of the lanes.
I wish I had a smaller bike to do that with, I'd be the same as SpankMe. 125hp can get you in trouble sometimes.
However I did get the opportunity to slip through three (yes really) indecisive motocyclists dithering through Jervois Quay traffic the other day.
God help the traffic if I ever get a trail bike for commuting... :innocent:

I had a GB about 15 years back and yeah I know exactly what you mean. I don't know what is was about that bike, but I think it was just so fun to ride and handled so well I felt really confident chucking it around. That, and the fact that it was so underpowered once it got up to speed I wasn't about to do anything that might slow it down, like brake for a corner or slow down for traffic ahead!
Still, I'd have another one.
Right now I ride through urban streets safely and usually that is within the speed limit especially when it is busy and around schools and such. I will split left or right when its snarled up, and sometimes I'll just have to blow off some of the birds perched on my handlebars, but usually that is when there is no other traffic in sight.

i'm a total blouse in the city.
I'm a nutter around town on the DT230,it brings out the worst in me.I keep turning down side streets - neeyit, neeyit, neeyit, flying over speedbumps, nailing the chicanes - the sidestreets become my motocross track. The bike is hard to ride slow around town,it either has to be on or off the gas and just wants you to rip through the gears.I'm with Ixion....stay away from 2 strokes.....

I hit option 2, although like Suglite, I'm a 59 nana around city streets, as I don't wanna get pinged, and I don't like running from the police in urban areas. I did once, and my greatest fear was that those morons were gonna take someone out, the way they were driving (try triple and then some of the speed limit after they'd already been smoked and I thought it was over).
Out in the country areas, where there's not too many cars, and generally good visibility, I'm happy to give it heaps.
James Deuce
5th June 2006, 10:53
Watch the 59 thing guys. The speed tolerance isn't 10km/hr, it's 10%.

I'd have to agree. There's something about various offramp/motorway/city outskirts areas that just pushes my "hahahaha, kiss my L-plate, retards!" button.
It's not even a matter of getting wherever you're going faster, it's about having fun. You haven't experienced real fun until you ring out a little two-smoker through traffic.
I didn't vote, cause none of those categories were really applicable.
I fully agree about the 2 strokes. Straight, empty, cop loving roads I stick to 59km/h, but the moment there is traffic/lights/corners all you see is a green flash and heaps of 2 smoke.

I hate to say this bro, but you gotta stop quoting your crankshaft, factory claimed horses. The good people at Suzuki did really well to drag great torque, and good smooth power out of the ol' nine hundy.
I know it, so do you, but it's makin me want to put a turbo on myh gixxer, and it turns out, I'm allergic to death, so my lady is tryin to talk me out of it.

Generally I ride as #2. But sometimes even though its rare I ride as #3.
I think this is due to being taking out twice this year by cages, and one other close call when I had to take severe action to avoid another and ended up on the footpath.
Some days I find that people are really out to get me and then I tend to take it easy for a day or two.
Call it gun shy or being a nana I dont mind

Off River Rd(headin into ham) onto Cromries Rd(sp). Heads into chartwell. If you catch it with no traffic theres a nice little left, right flick, slightly uphill, then into a left hander. Just a bit of a pain as there is usually a bit of traffic on that intersection.
I ride like a nana in town all the time, 98% of which is within the speed limit, and if I go over the limit then it's genuinely due to 'speed creep'. However I ride at speeds I believe to be safe (yes Mrs Governmunt, I am capable of making balanced and educated decisions myself, so the rules don't apply to me, coz I'm special) when riding in rural areas and on motorways. 18 years without a (road) crash, and no demerit points, so I like to think I've pretty much got the right balance. Unless you count dropping the bike at less than 10 kmph while navigating a 90 degree downhill turn with Mrs Biff and a boat load of luggage on the back in Queestown recently. Which I obviously don't, because that's the kind of guy I am. So- what I'm trying to say is - don't ride slowly - it's dangerous. Why can't I create new paragraphs in my posts today?

That's not true... I have never exceeded 70km/h on my 2 stroke :scooter: 50cc scooter!! :doobey:
Picked 2 'coz I'm always safe, but seeing as I have had my license for 5 months and 29 days, and commute on the motorway daily, almost always illegal.
EIther that, or I'd be legal but unsafe. Great choices innit?
Bah - only 70? Im fixing up my old piaggio Zip 50 at the moment for my sister. With the fairings on it used to get to 75-80km/h, without them its doing an easy 85+. Its an amazing little bastard!
