Howdi, considering an rs250 for me next bike, but just wanna get some idea of the *maintenance*
general how long is a string answer for 10k and 20k rebuilds.
cos I wanna know have you ever seen rain
Could ring a shop, but easier to bother you people that obviously have no chobs.

Probably similar to a NSR250 in terms of rebuilds. Not sure about costs though. My mate Rick Porter of RP Racing helped write the FAQ on my site a few years back (www.nsr250sp.com now www.simjen.com)
Rebuild info for NSR's as below:
In road use, R P Racing replace rings every 30,000km and pistons, rings, circlips, pins etc every 60,000km. Ring groove should be thoroughly inspected when replacing rings and any sign of wear should result in piston replacement regardless of km. A flapping ring will break and do a LOT of damage.Top-end is exposed by seperating at the cylinder; thus a base gasket will also be required. Removal of the head is un-neccessary.
Cylinders do not require oversizing.
Cranks should last 180,000km, but it pays to do a visual check each time top-end is being attended to. (A customer of theirs who used a MC21 for a courier vehicle, ran his bike from 12,500km to 194,000km before the engine retired.)
A quality 2-stroke oil is paramount. A sub standard oil or frequent trips to the redline will shorten these intervals dramaticly.
If you have recently purchased a used bike, then it may pay to have the engine checked well before the indicated intervals. Speedo readings on old bikes with multiple owners are renound for their inacuracy.

Traded in my rs250 before it needed a rebuild. I dont rekon the need it as often as you hear mine had done 14k and still ran perfectly. Motorad said they didnt have the time or parts to do it so got rid of it. But if you can get a good one its well worth it.

Rebuilds are a bitch with that powervalve system. It's expensive to change those and if you dont youll fuck the barrels as well.
NSR's dont need that so get one. :blip:
Too tired to explain why. RS250's are Peaky little shitbags - NSR's are sublime.

I dunno the TYGA kit IS for the nsr
Go the NSR, I honestly feel sorry for RGV's/RS's , that one little design flaw fucks em up.
RS with an NSR engine conversion
But NSR has more options aftermarket.
And the japanese look at it and go AHHH-SOOoooOH which I think is cool :doobey:

The Aprilia RS250's all have the Suzuki VJ22 engine. Ring a suzuki dealer and get prices for top end rebuild. Some good info on www.rgv250.co.uk.

All rs 250s (aprilia) vj22 suzuki RGV motor.
As said before by others ref service windows but and this is the big but. Its been owned by someone else so. I always do a strip down and at the very least chuck the rings and install new ones. Then again i never do the least and replace rings little end and piston pin as standard. If there is even a hint of wear on the piston, that goes as well. I use pro-x pistons and suzuki piston pins as the suzuki ones are lighter. Next use fully synth oil brand unimportant but i like repsol because the bottle is green.
check the barrel for wear ie bad scoring. Light scuffs can be rubbed with a bit of fine emery if it makes you feel better. Pay special attention to the exhaust port bridge look for flakeing or cracking. If any of this chuck or get re-coat. My last new cylinder was about $750 nz. Watch out for worn power valves as this motor has issues with these and suzuki modified these as they failed frequently with bad piston and bore damage. These are expensive.
Thats the potential baaad stuff, as for the bike very very good. Handling is fast brakes up with the best modern stuff. Nice over front riding position. Power can be good if set up right and on this bike a pair of aftermarket zorsts work well, i use the tyga ones.
This bike could be a handfull for a new rider as power delivery is not proggressive and is a little peaky but this also makes them fun.
Most of my youth was spent on RGVs, and most of my near death experiances were on these bikes so, if new beware they are single minded and they do bite back if treated without some respect!.
I have at this time an NSR MC21 and an RS 250 1999 model they are both very good mounts but i wish that Aprilia had put the NSR motor in their frame as it is the better motor all round. For racing the vj22 motor can be made to put out impressive ponies but at a cost.
If it were a choice of an NSR or RS for the road i would go for the NSR its just a better bike all round but i love them both so i now have one of each. Both race bikes as i think they are wasted on the road.
Hope this helps ask more if you need more info.

Hey man, thanks HEAPS. Everyone that knows my history closely is saying go 4stroke, but the smokey things are so fun!
Guess I should look at an NSR for a 2stroke seeing as this reliabilty thing seems to be allergic to me when it comes to vehicles.
