At least there is no power crisis down here. If we get short of power we will cut the cable and the north island will go dark

the south islanders are used to this ... so they are generally more prepared for no power .. and heating .. thats what fires are for..
the no power situation in aucks .. is a force majure .. a major storm event .. no one can predict this
also with aucks exploding growth the network system had never been updated, happens every storm event. Problem is most of the ppl in aucks rely on power to run everything in the home... where as ppl down south just use it mostly for the basics

The real problem is the disproportionate number of espresso machines per square kilomtere in central Auckland. Just think about how much power it takes to froth up yer next latté. Entire South Island towns have been flooded in power projects just so Finn & Co. can have their daily frothy fix.

grins espresso machines .. houses that are lit up like xmas, underfloor heating, heat pumps, every gadet known to man, water heating (south islanders have wetback systems) you name it .. aucklanders run it on electricity ..
then its a sheer numbers game ... original post says it all for me ... will never live there ever

I guess a little power 'outage' (WTF, it's a 'failure') is a small price to pay for living in a city with so many other positives.
One day I'll think of one of them.

The secret is to live just out of the city by a beautiful beach with about 10 other beautiful beaches within a half hour if one's own 3km long beach is getting boring... Or right on a large, sheltered harbour with many beautiful islands to visit and great fishing... Not to mention it's warm all year round, just a bit wet sometimes... Shall I go on...?:nya:

Of course the 40 people who they interviewed and said - 'yeah whatever' didn't make the news - the one or two dicks who were out of shape about it get the headlines.
Sniper - yeah whatever. I know how much my property values have escalated in the past 5 years - how's whoop-whoop doing?:nya: :nya: :nya:

Plenty of power out in deepest Westieland!
My La Pavoni was still extracting beaut espresso, so I was able to proceed into the CBD caffeinated. Driving (In cage due to feral wind) was disturbingly easy with the traffic lights out! 'Twas good exercise getting up to the 16th floor of work...only to go and lurk at Motohaus when I was sent away an hour later. Butane powered soldering irons and the usual hand tools meant a few things were getting done there.
Apparently mobile espresso vans were doing a roaring trade in town
And BTW, almost all of Auckland's power comes from the Huntly thermal plant...so as much as the southerners would like to cut the cable, it wouldn't do much to Orcland. :nya: (I understand the sentiment being a southerner myself...so sorry to shatter the myth!)

It's gone up by 30% in Palmy too, that makes about $500.00 capital gain.

Nice thought, but not quite correct. New Zealand's power supply is all interconnected by a grid system. Hamilton, Auckland and the far North use around a third, the rest of the North Island use a third, and the South Island is around a third. At present the peak demand is over 6000 MW, Huntly Otahuhu and Southdown supply almost 1500 MW, but that still leaves the northern region short by 500 MW.
Not only is the region short for its physical demand, but where does its reserve come from? For the least amount of security of supply there must be sufficient spinning reserve to cover the loss of any single unit. That means that the norther region needs 380 MW of spinning reserve. It can only get that amount by the addition of 380 MW of hydro plant, or another 1140 MW of traditional thermal plant. There isn't 380 MW of hydro river available up there, so the Northern region is short by at least 1640 MW from covering its own load.

Don't be too hard on 'em - I'm going down for the RAT raid in a few weeks - they might spike my lattes.
