The "track day only" bike

this comes out of a discussion I had with a mate over the weekend (OK there was some beer involved, (but not much):

we decided it was sensible to have a track day only bike each, and here's why......

we're both keen to do some track time (to see how quick we really are, rather than just fooling ourselves with the Akaroa GP, or MotoGP Kaikoura) but are conscious that decking our pride and joy on the track means no insurance, and potentially total loss. Apart from anything else, the domestic consequences of that would be ....... intolerable.

also, even a lowside will cause lots of damage to shiny or painted bits, probably a minimum of a grand. Plus you havent got a bike to ride anymore.

The thought goes: buy a F3 race bike for say, $3000 a NC30 or ZRX400. All the hard work is done, no rego or WOF to worry about, and a bin on it will be cheaper than a newer bike (well.... maybe). basically the point is that buying a track day only bike means you get one "prepaid" bin. from there its all good. Plus if the bug bites hard, you can go racing for real.

This sounds so sensible to me.... but tell me Im wrong.

I've been looking for one for awhile now... Im after something older like a GPz or GS but will take just about anything over 500cc with four pots and for less than 500 beans... want to use it for drag and stunt days too... anyone got me a bike?
I'll trade my fucked GPz750... nah its really a good bike, worth about a million bucks but I dont mind parting with it for your peice of shit:yes:

This is a good idea, and definitly cheaper, but it is so woeful trading my bike back to its dredgery from the life love and speed of its track cloths!!
Just buy heaps of bikes!!!

Great idea. F3 is a good cost effective start. Yes you will bin it but F3 bikes crash cheaply, most bins are easily fixed with half a packet of cable ties if you're not too hung up on looks. Invest in some crash bungs though - mine have probably paid themselves 10 times over now.

Funny. A lot of the fast people I ride with sometimes have the same idea, and all seem to be getting track only bikes. Cept' for Mikey, his one doubles as a road bike as well.

They don't run Pre 89 down here, it's not an offical MNZ class and we dont really have the numbers to split them, post classic here is Pre 82

but the 3K will still get you a reasonable F3 bike and if you decide thats to fast there's alays clubmans

the next club day is at Levels, I'll ask around and see if anyone has anything for sale, although a few good deals come up on trademe as well

Formula 3/Clubmans/Postclassic is a brilliant plan. These bikes are probably gonna get expensive if we all start chasing them. I've also contemplated 150 streetstock as an ultracheep way to go racing and build skills. Must stop spending bucks on streetbikes and accessories.:doobey:
