View Full Version : Couples with a Bike each

Im just interested in how many couples are out there who both ride their own bike each. TL Rider and I obviously find it a big factor in our relationship. The part that works well is we both enjoy our own ride, doing something together, but separately. I dont get in his way and he doesnt get to scare me (cause Im not on the back of his bike). And now we have the bikes we both like that we can happily swap and enjoy each others ride. Makes for a great social life too.

I don't think my wife will ever own a bike of her own, mind you you never know. She however loves sharing time with me as a pillion on rides out of town.

Mstrs and I have our own bikes, although I still like to pillion on his - I like to go fast but I'm not confident to ride that fast on my own bike. hXc has one too and we occasionally all go for a ride together. Makes a nice family day out.

Dont get me wrong, I encourage pillion riding, great place to learn to ride. The more women I see out on bikes, the better, be it pillion or their own. Making the next step and moving on to her own bike can be a bit daunting, Im no flash rider, steady as she goes, but I always get to the next meeting point with a big smile on my face.:blah:

White Trash and I do our own riding. We just have to do it seperately at the mo as we've only got one bike until finances improve.

Not speaking for myself in particular, but mum and dad both had bikes. Everytime they went out riding they went out together. Sometimes she would pillion. Sometimes she would ride her own bike.

Now.. She hardly rides. It just doesn't feel the same.

This is Tink here, NZKalts wife, I enjoy going for a blat on my own bike, like some of the other ladies out there, Im not very confident at high speed yet, Im putting it down to my ride, GSXF 750, good bike!!! but Ive fallen for another, took a Gixxer 600 K6 for a test ride the other day, guess what I want in my Santa sack this year:yes: .

I enjoy being a pillion on the back of Kevs bike, its the only time I keep up with everyone. I ride my bike at my pace, I have no pressure from anyone to go faster, its awesome riding with Duc girl and TL rider and the rest of them, and I feel Im improving each time I go out. Its all about enjoying what you are doing, its no fun if you dont.

That;s nice, a couple of weeks ago i seen these two new motorbikes the same models, but there number plates where reversed with model and year on both, also it was mum and dad with two kids around 9-12yrs old with all the gear. you do'nt see that very often, i thought that was neat.:scooter:

Yeah, the family that plays together, stays together, or summat like that.. it is really cool to be able to be involved with what your kids are doing - especially those teenage years - and to have your teenagers still keen to hang out with the olds is great... besides, then you know exactly what the little buggers are up to..

My other half has her own bike ( K5 SV650S). She used to only pillion, I hardly even knew she was on the back. Finally convinced her that her talent was wasted sitting behind me, and that she should be sitting behind her own set of bars. The rest is history. She rides really well. The local shop lent her a K6 GSX-R750 for the weekend a couple of weeks back. Looks like the bank account is going to take another thrashing later this year!! In saying that, her six fiddy is an awesome fun bike to ride ( when I get permission to ride it). We both enjoy biking together, or going for solo rides. Due to the nature of my job, I'm quite often working on nice days ( 7 days a week), and it's nothing for my girl to go out for a 7-800km ride by herself. I suppose I am quite lucky that we both get the same enjoyment out of riding

There is currently a NZ couple doing a tour of Sth America, Nth America and Canada on bikes. They have 2 kids aged 6 and 4, are doing a lot of offroad stuff and camping out etc in the wilds so they cart everything with them. They had to get pillion seats adapted with frames because the kids fall asleep while travelling. They are going to be away for a year I think. Awesome education for those kids eh?

This is a bit off topic - duh - like I've never done that before, LOL - but it seems to me that women generally do ride their own ride and aren't sucked in to that "gotta prove myself" mentality. We don't seem to have the need to appear better than anyone else on the road, hence we get in to less trouble. Just my observations, right... back to the topic...

Mine too - due to garage renovations, piles of mud everywhere and bikes been stored at a friendly neighbours, compounded with the fact that I'm a real blouse and feel the cold heaps, decided to put bike rego on hold for 3 mths- hopefully I don't forget all that I have learned. I don't think I'll ever get her indoors to even ride pillion. It took a long long time for her to agree to me getting a bike.
She does like the bank balance now though, as $13 for petrol and free parking, against $70 petrol and $70 parking per week was a very good persuader.
Just need to get the full so I can get a 'real' bike....

I only taught the wife to ride a bike 3 months ago, and she has 2 dirt bikes.
She has'nt expressed interest as such to ride on the road, but I guess if I brought a GN250 or similar home she would perk up some interest.

Mrs V has always been happy as pillion, but this year decided "I could do that".

We got a Virago 250 for her to learn on, but it's a slow process, now halted for the winter.

My wife had a 125 when she was still on learner plates (125cc maximum over here in the UK as a learner) - but her learner ran out (you get two years to pass full licence I think) so she was off the road for a while.

Thankfully she decided to get back into biking - so this time, to make sure she had an "incentive" to get her training done and pass her test, I sourced a 250 Virago. And we both loved it to bits! Laura (the wife) said she wanted to spend the first 2 years on a smaller capacity machine (unless you take a special Direct Access test - for loads more money - you're restricted to 250cc for 2 years on full licence), so the 250 was ideal - and at just 5 foot tall, the low seat height was ideal.

She's now riding a 535 Virago.

But back to the subject... obviously, we both ride. Tend to do our own thing most of the time, but we do go out on rides together. Which works pretty well. She has a much better sense of direction than me and I'm a far more assertive rider than her. So she takes point and I ride "shotgun". So she can navigate and set her own pace, I can take care of covering her back and if I spot we need to change lanes etc, means I can get out there, set up the position for her to move into and that sort of thing.

Out of curiosity - you guys/gals that do ride out together, do you have pre-agreed signals for things? Like if I know we have to move over and she hasn't realised, I get into position, then give her a set of three short blasts on the horn.

Just wondered what you use?

I agree with Annette, it's nice to be together and doing your own thing at the same time.

Him - very experienced - has a Hayabusa, rides fast. Me - pretty new to it all (rode scooters for years) got a Savage last year (650 single) - slow and cautious.
I got sick of being pillion all the time.
Cos I ride too slow for him we have compromised.
Long tours I go pillion (like going length of NI and back in 5 days)
Shorter trips - rallies , he is bored to death riding at my speed.
Weekends - we go our separate ways and try and meet up at coffee places.

My gf rides a scooter if that counts (the Lifan 125) we got our learner's together but she is a more cautious kind and didn't want to hop straight on to bikes (well we had the scooter to start with but I wasn't the patient kind and I have a short attention span so I got a FXR150... and 3 and a half months later got a zzr250...) She's slowly learning to ride a bike though, she's had a couple of goes at my fxr150 and my zzr250, I think zzr250 is actually a bit easier for her since the clutch isn't as sensitive. She hasn't been on road though, going out for another ride today!

I lived with a lady and we went everywhere on me trusty BMW. So after a year I asked her did she want a bike. She rode a Honda CB250 and said it was ok but underpowered. I had a mate who was overseas and left his CBR600 and wanted it ridden. So i chucked her on it and she loved it.

Rode it from Ham back to Auk. Rode it for the next year and we went away together on seperate bikes all the time. She rode in all weathers and never did a thing wrong. rain shine whatever. i was impressed. never dropped it or anything.

So what I am trying to say id that the licences laws in my view are bloody stooopid.

what better to learn on a RG250 or a BMW Scarver. got that off me chest.

My spousal unit (thehollowmen) has his bike, and I have a scooter. The plan was to ride the scoot until I felt confident going for my bike learners and then moving on to a proper bike. But I am happy being pillion on the big bike and can fart around town when I want to on the scooter, so I'm not sure if I'll ever feel the need to get a bike of my own. :scooter:

But you never know. I'll probably change my mind in a few years, and hopefully at that point I'll also be able to afford a bike. There's no way I could afford one at the moment, so it's not really an option even if I did want one.

It's highly entertaining riding as a pillion with thehollowmen. He wiggles his butt!

Mrs H is the deft and very stylie rider of a Suzuki VZ800K5 Marauder. In blue, with Givi screen and Ventura packrack. Me? I ride the world's most complete motorcycle -- the magnificent 2005 Yamaha FJR1300T -- resplendent in two-tone silver and blue. Whoar.

My husband isn't into bikes anymore, he did have a GN at one stage, and he liked the look of the Hornets for when he got his full but it wasn't his thing, more into mountain biking... BUT the Boyfriend  is into bikes in a bike way, has big bike for touring and few smaller ones for other shit.
I do love riding with someone who is just as passionate about bikes as I am... it makes the rides fun and exciting, and I *mostly* keep up, feel like i am improving all the time. Funny how even years on I still find myself learning new stuff, must be the change in bike type that has really done it.

The only thing I get paranoid about when riding with a B/F or someone I'm close too ...and i do worry at times... is coming round the corner and finding them down on the road. Stupid really, but guess I'm just a worrywart.

Both have a ZX636 ea with consecutive plates & a KLR250ea again with consecutive plates. We both enjoy going to rallies together & have been to 19 Cold Kiwi's & 7 Moto GP's/500s at Phillip Island & 1 at Eastern Creek.
Really like to get out on the back country roads on the KLRs & do some exploring - did The Motu & Lake Waikerimoana this year, done Molesworth & Rainbow twice. The wife commutes daily on the bike where as I take the company race car.
Favourite roads include road to Gisborne from Napier(via Tiniroto), Takaka Hill, Buller Gorge, Awakino gorge, Waioeka gorge, East Cape, road from Pohongina to Waipukurau:scooter: :scooter: :scooter: :scooter:

Heavenly Talker and I are both really passionate about bikes, when we met I had a bike and she had never ridden, so I got her into pillion and eventually she got bored with it, so I took her to Waiheke island for the day and rented her a scooter; she loved it and wanted to learn, now she rides a Honda V4 750 (3rd bike) and loves riding as much as I do. I knew I should marry her when I overheard a conversation one day she was having with a family friend,
the friend asked "are you going to get him to give up bikes?" HT replied, "the bike was with him before I was, I dont think so."

I met my husband at a WIMA rally so he already knew I was into bikes! I had an RG150 at that stage and was a few weeks away from getting my full licence. He was really supportive and he had four bikes (and a scooter!) of his own so it was a match made in heaven. Since then I've changed my bike twice (first to a BMW F650CS and now to the Goose) but he's still stuck with his old bikes! He loves riding mine and does all the maintenance on it. He's a much better rider than me and has done all of the 1000 Milers (I've never done one and doubt very much if I ever will - not really my thing!) but he tailors his riding speed to mine when we go out. He gets the opportunity to go faster with his mates but he never makes me feel like I'm holding him up.

GF rides a CBR125 (learner bike in uk) passed a few weeks ago so wants bigger bike when we get to Nz. I ride GSXR600, and stick to her pace when we're out together...she's getting much faster and smoother now as her commute has changed from 5 mins to 40mins cross country each day.
she's always way faster out of junctions than me( well for 30 yards anyway)....I get it turned then gas it....she just shoots off.
unfortunately for me she wants a Duc monster 620.(she has little legs).....expensive taste that girl.

The girlie just bought a bike ....... Quite funny really.. she hated the bike when I met her .. then she was curious.. then she went on the back of the old zxr400 and it's been downhill from here...

Still have to get her out on the bike (time and weather being a factor)

But hopefully when she does i'll get rid of the buzzing in my ear wanting a ride on the back :dodge:

Well back in the old days when I could still ride (well last Easter actually), we went on a great ride down in the South Island together on the 2 bikes. The Missus loves her VT even though I've suggested she upgrades to a 400 or 600.

It's great riding a long trip on seperate bikes.

Nahh, I'm still on my R, so have yet to take her on the back of a proper bike. She pillioned on little 110cc bikes in Asia, but kept asking me to slow don whenever we exceeded 50kph! We'll get her riding yet! heh heh heh...

Well SDU use to pillion with me every where around the country.
So much so that she was once called my Koala.
As she was always on the back of the bike.

She tried to ride, but with a mixed start with one thing and an other.
It did not take, but the desire was still there.
So after getting her in to dirt bikes her confidence grew.
And she returned to the road knowing that she could handle a bike and just had to keep a eye out for idiots in cars.

So now she rides a Yamaha XT225 Serow (not as much now and could be for sale one day) a Suzuki DR650 and if I'm around a Moto Guzzi MKIII Le Mans. (just to be safe as it is a big heavy bike for her to handle at times)
And I ride a KTM 640 and the Moto Guzzi MKIV Le Mans and some times the MKIII when SDU is not using it.

I know a lot of couples that have and ride two bikes to be safe.
That is, if one has a crash for what ever reason, one is still OK to look after the kids and there partner.
But if the worst comes to the worst that works to.

My wife got her learners a couple of weeks ago and now I ride out to quiet roads/car parks with her following in the cage with the kids - she then practices but she's finding the VTR too heavy for her liking so we'll have to save up to get her a bike of her own - possibly FXR 150 - we'll then be a 2 bike couple - only hurdle will be to find babysitters as her family are all in the South Island and mine are all in Scotland.
Bottom line is we'll need to be a 2 bike family coz she don't like my bike - and I ain't parting with it until I can ride a SV650/Raptor 650 legally!

Think carefully before you get an FXR 150. I have just got one and I decided very quickly that I should have got 250. Its very easy to learn on and great around town. Its light, forgiving, cheap to buy and cheap to run.

GoGal and I met on a ride to a Rally, so were both into biking when we got together - and it's the only way both of us would have it. That was about 6 years ago. We 'eloped' and got married a few months ago.

We love rallies, overnighters, - and touring and staying at the country pubs - putting us in touch with grass roots ENZED.

My ride is an ST1300, the thinking Man's tourer, and GoGal pilots a spunky bright blue Honda 750 Shadow, which she handles great.

On the road I sometimes get a bit a head, but just wait the few seconds it takes J to catch up every so often.

We've just chucked our jobs in, sold the house and rentals, and have ''gone country'' so we don't have to work so often and are starting on our bucket list.

Roll on Summer huh people?

My partner and I have two bikes each!

One is a road bike and one is a race bike. He has a Suzuki GS 500 and I have a Yamaha FZR 250. (:bye: I use to have a CBR 600, till some muza ran a red light) We also have bucket racers which are great fun. Mine is a Honda SL100 in a Honda 125T frame and his is a FXR/Loncin 150cc. There is also the 'Delta' project on the table at the moment. I have a pocketbike that I ride on a track as well. That one gave me a broken collarbone last time out.

We moved from one of the biggest cities in NZ to a small central north island town and love it.
He works on the bikes everyday at home and I go to work. Bikes are very important in our house.

We have some great roads here to ride around and race tracks not far away.

We know we have the ultimate lifestyle. :wari:

We didn't a) belong to KB or b) have bikes when this thread ended in 06.

It all started when Nasty wanted a scooter (to go 30km into the Welly wind on the motorway!!!!). I pursuaded her to go for a real bike, so she got an FXR150 while she went through the learner/restricted process.

Well I already had my license and so I {ahem} borrowed the FXR once or twice for a wee pootle. Then I got a contract in Paraparaumu so I sometimes rode her bike while she went the other way in the car.

One day as I struggled up Pukerua Bay hill against the northerly I thought bugger it, I like this .... but it's time to get me a bigger bike. I got a CBR600, Nasty graduated and got a Yammy Virago500 then a Kwaka GPZ500 and now a Suz GSX-F750. And I got a newer CBR600.

We then bought Nolan N102 helmets with bluetooth bike-to-bike coms and we are having a ball. We tour all over, we chat, we share the wonder of the scenery, we plan our winning lotto finances and love it when we stop at a cafe to find other couples doing the same.

There's nothing we've done as a couple that has given us as much pleasure and satisfaction (well almost nothing ).

p.s. Oh and now we have a bucket racer each as well :first:

I cant believe how awesome it feels to ride yourself, and the refreshing feeling after being out for a ride. Like blowing out the cobwebbs!
I find we try to get out and ride more, having our time out together away from the kids. Now the warmer weather is approching, its grabbing each moment when we have the sames days off work.
We are now aiming for a trip across to the West Coast, which will be a first for me, so I have to get out there and get my hours up.
I sooooo look forward to each fine day as they come and usually try and leap at the chance to get out there when I can, and when we can find minders for the kids lol.

That just sounded bad 71 !

Good thread though i must admit lol So did anyone start up an annual couples who ride get together event ?

Only took Heidi a half doz rides on the back of the S3 to want to ride her own bike (nothing to do with my riding i'm sure)
So we're a 3 bike family at the mo, two S3's and her scorp ! Tried to talk her into riding the 955 but alas she wants a cruiser, so it might be going shortly as a trade in (once she has her full)
Thinking of changing stylez myself and perhaps swapping the triple for a cruiser as well (then look at race bikes hehehe) Or set the triple up for track work only and a cruiser to slow me up on the roads a bit
Love the S3 and dont have a problem riding 6 hrs str8, but it just seems to search out the windies all by itself ! So it's just gonna frustrate both Heidi and I, with her on a cruze an the S3 wanting to play up all the time !

The times they are a changing ! (recon i've shaved 10 seconds off my laps hehe Doh !)

We have three two-wheeled vehicles between two of us. I have my multi-purpose Volty for every occasion from commuting to riding out of town. Partner has a scooter for commuting (Piaggio Hexagon 180cc) and an SV1000S for the wide open spaces.

I'm happy riding my own bike or being a passenger on either of his. I get to ride every day, so sometimes it's nice to hop on the back of his bike and be able to enjoy the ride and the scenery without having to concentrate on riding.

Also he has been riding for about 35 years and I have been riding for almost two years, so jumping on the back of his bike and paying attention to what he does (cornering, changes in technique in the wet, etc) is always helpful for me to improve my own riding.

Yeah, my wife & I have our own bikes. Have had for twenty years...

For a big chunk of that time, my bike sat in bits on a shelf so we shared a few bikes that were "ours" rather than strictly "his & hers" for a while. I finished screwing my bike together just over two years ago, and we bought her a bike that she particularly likes (Buell XB12S) so we now have "our own" bikes and enjoy riding together again. She very rarely pillions these days, preferring to do it herself. We would like to do a 1000 miler (maybe this year, probably next year) and a trip on the bikes around the south island.

We had already been married for a few years before I got my first bike at 25 years of age, and it became an "us" thing right from the beginning.

Hitcher why do you prefer the FJR?

Seeing how you asked, and in no order of priority:

1. Standard 17" rubber front and rear (the ST has oddball tyres at both ends)
2. Span-adjustable clutch lever
3. Fully-adjustable front suspension
4. 40kg lighter
5. R1-sourced brakes
6. No linked brakes
7. Panniers are easier to attach and remove
8. Bike looks great without the panniers on
9. One key can be used to have both panniers unlocked at the same time
10. Better pillion comfort (I have on good authority)
11. That wonderful Yamaha inline four, with stump-pulling power that goes on forever

I should note at this point that I have owned both an ST1300 (32,000km) and an FJR (73,000km so far).

What do I miss about the ST1300?

1. That 27 litre fuel tank
2. The air temperature thermometer
3. The built-in drop bars
4. The rear suspension pre-load adjuster

Both are great bikes.

I haven't ridden the automatic FJR. Those who have generally enjoy them once they've got used to not having a clutch lever. But the two manual versions (ABS and non-ABS) are pretty damned fine bikes.
