Alright, for those of us familiar with the band 'Tool' there is a saying that there that goes 'there are tool fans and then there are "tool fans"...'

I have always known that there was something behind the music of tool, and knew that there was a philosophy behind it.

Last night i was listing to a random selection of their songs a mate had given me and decided to google the word 'aenema' knowing that enema was 'the enemy' and an enima was a nasty way of cleaning your insides.

Anyway to get to the point i discovered that the album Aenema is largely based around the works of Carl Jung, more comonly known as Jungist Philosophy.

Has anyone on here read any of his work, basically looking for some good titles to read as i found what i read about him quite interesting.

Man & His Symbols is my favourite, but you'll need to read it with Fontana's Dictionary of Modern Thought next to you so you can get with the flow of Jungian ontology.

You've also got to get your enema's sorted out buddy, or you next trip to hospital might be a bit frightening.

You could at least spell it right, or you're just teasing man.

LachrymologyOh yes, that is a better spelling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachrymology

Still love their stuff. Have all their CDs.

Gareth, have you ever been to one of their concerts? I've been to.. 3 . In the last two they played a trick on the crowd (You'd think they'd learn..).

Maynard says "Repeat after me!!" and the crowd does. Hey lookie, I googled and he has done it many times.

"Repeat after me: Question authority. (Crowd: QUESTION AUTHORITY!!!) Strive to be different (Crowd: STRIVE TO BE DIFFERNENT!!") Strive to be unique. (..) Never repeat what other people say,"

It's quite funny to watch.

They just like mucking with your head. Don't take Tool too seriously.

whether or not the band actually believes and or follows the beliefs of Carl Jung is not what i am interested in, the only reason that tool is relevant is because it is their music that lead me to it.

after listening to a couple of the songs from aenema there are some links to the stuff that carl jung experienced, especially in the song aenema. For instance it was said that jung had a 'mental breakdown' over a period of 6 years in which time he invisaged great floods washing over europe, and prophecised about the end of the world and also events that happened in WWII.

Thanks jim2 for the links to the literature regarding jung.

As for tool, the drummer was voted best percussionist (sp) im pretty sure for last 7 or so years in a row. The music they make is awesome. I can either listen to it on my bike when im having a cain, or get on the piss (or other substance) and chill out to it which i really like.

I've been a fan for sometime, some people just interpret the lyrics too far.
Do a quick search for lateralus or aenima on songmeanings.net and you'll see what I mean.

Stop diverting gareth from his search you buggers. Some of you fellas never move on from bikes, piss, and chicks, and it's nice to see someone extending themself.

Jung was one of Freud's students, and it is interesting to see how Jungian psychology diverges from Freudian. Make sure you compare other schools of psychology and don't treat Psych as a religion and you'll be fine.

Don't use it as a conversational gambit. Most people roll their eyes the moment you start rabbiting on about ego, id, and anima. It's quite a good way of compartmentalising the gross (not horrid or ugly - the larger generalised bits) aspects of standard human behaviour, and is useful where Freud would just blame his mum and then have a dream about some breasts.

blame his mum and then have a dream about some breasts.
That happened on 'Malcolm in the middle'.

Different sort of psychology, but I always thought that Zimbardo fella was a bit of fun. People just playing out their roles in life, leading to horrible consequences.

Dammit, there's always one clever bastard who finds you out.

Tool? I don't think so Tim. The only thing Jung about Tool is that people who listen to it have got to be sooo boozed that they get collectively unconcious.....
(p/t)

Gareth_d - no names of books off the top of my head but shitloads of results if you google. Eg... http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/jung.html. Good on ya for thinking about some of this stuff. The people who laugh are intimidated by things they can't understand :innocent:

Colonel: Marine, what is that button on your body armor?
Private Joker: A peace symbol, sir.
Colonel: Where'd you get it?
Private Joker: I don't remember, sir.
Colonel: What is that you've got written on your helmet?
Private Joker: "Born to Kill", sir.
Colonel: You write "Born to Kill" on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Private Joker: No, sir.
Colonel: You'd better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant shit on you.
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Colonel: Now answer my question or you'll be standing tall before the man.
Private Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Colonel: The what?
Private Joker: The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.
Colonel: Whose side are you on, son?
Private Joker: Our side, sir.
Colonel: Don't you love your country?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Colonel: Then how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Colonel: Son, all I've ever asked of my marines is that they obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese, because inside every gook there is an American trying to get out. It's a hardball world, son. We've gotta keep our heads until this peace craze blows over.
Private Joker: Aye-aye, sir.

Danny Carey is a frickin legend drummer. Check out some of the comments on his philosophies and beliefs in this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Carey

Interesting......

P.S. - I often fall asleep to music through a good pair of headphones - falling asleep to Tool songs leads to weird dreams!
