Hi all,
I bought a 2004 yamaha xv250 last october, and it worked perfectly until a few months ago when an intermittent electrical problem developed:
So far it's only happened when the bike's hot and I turn it off, and I try to start it again but I hit the starter button and it completely dies - no headlight or anything. Then sometime about 10 minutes later it will work as normal.
This happened about twice and I took the bike into yamaha and they prodded around but couldnt find anything wrong and said if it happens again, bring it back, so I kept riding it and it happened again and I took it back last week, and they still can't find anything wrong with it. And they don't want to have to ride it around long enough to get the problem to re-occur, which is fair enough.
The warranty runs out in about 3 weeks. Basically my question is, what can I expect yamaha to do? And if anybody has any idea what the problem could be, that would be cool too. Thanks

Welcome to KB(kiwi biker)....

Does the bike over heat? Heat can do strange things to electronics...

Do you use it a lot? If not I would suggest that you use it as mush as you can in this next 3 weeks. If it totally fails then you can at least take it back.

welcome to KB.....

I have a Virago XV250 and the only time I had any electrical prob was when I left the keys in it and walked away with the lights etc still going....I flattened the battery. I made the fatal mistake of jump starting it... I stuffed up the R sounds like regulator but its not called a regulator.
Get them to check that out..... so never jump start a XV250.

Otherwise these bikes run like a dream....... done over 80,000kms on mine.

Someone on here will give you the correct name for the R part that I am talking about... has fin things on it and it is smallish. I had a second hand one put on my bike and its running sweet.

All the best in finding out what it is.

Plus you are also under warrenty, they should be sorting it out properly for you.

Recitifier?

Now the way we work around here is so long as you book the job/mention the problem you'd be fine even after the warrenty runs out. but then again we have nice suppliers.....

The thing I'm talking about is about 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2inches at the top and 3 inches at the bottom. Just over 1 inch wide. 3 holes to put bolts throu it...... and a black plug connector with 5 prongs in it. it is also flat and a big black thing on the back... and totally finned.

number on it SH661-12
6.0.1

Hey fellas
Thanks for your recommendations
I guess I should restate what I'm really asking -
The bike has an intermittent fault and it's still under warranty.
Yamaha have had it twice and still not fixed it.
I can appreciate that the fault is difficult and annoying to fix, but that doesn't change the fact that the bike is almost new and I shouldn't have to put up with it.
So what can I expect Yamaha to do?
Give me a full refund?
Buy the bike off me for its market value?
Find an expert who will actually be able to fix it?.

Its a warranty claim. They should make an effort and fix it.Don't they want return business ?

Take the bike back and make them fix the problem.
But they LEND you a bike whilst they are fixing it.

OR they take the bike back and they give you another new bike.
(Like when you take a toaster back they give you a brand new replacement)

As it is still under warrently... you have those two options.

You can occassionally get a dud item..... this could be the one.
Rare for a Yamaha Virago thou.....

Let us know what you end up doing.

Hey fullas
I wrote a letter to Yamaha NZ saying that since it's under warranty and you've had two chances to fix it and it's still not fixed so you should give me a new bike.
At the time I sent the letter, the bike was still at the Yamaha dealer, and when I went to pick it up they were in the process of replacing the starter solenoid and ignition key switch (only took them 15mins).
I reckon that must have been a month ago and the problem hasn't reoccured since and I've ridden it a fair bit so I'm pretty sure it's fixed.
Cheers for the advice guys
Good on you Yamaha
