Only 5 of us (Must be a new series of survivor on or something. Steve from ChCh turned up on another R1200GS, (Last time he rode with us was the night before Max's clutch disatster) He must have given Max the shits as he cut out electrically just after I passed a car near Paintball. He started up straight away, so feck knows what happened. Otherwise, no problems at all.

Might miss the ride this week.
A visiting mate said he thought I had blown a seal.
I quickly wiped my mouth and said it was probably Mayonnaise as I had just eaten a salad sandwich.
He pointed to the oil on my fork tube.
He was right. I had blown a seal.
Got to find some time to get on to that.
Need to build my motorbike garage fast.

Guess what? Biker Must Walk (Again) I can hear Hinny laughing from here.:weep:

Track day was friggin excellent, however I was giving the Big Beemer so much stick I too blew a seal on the rear diff. (It must have been when I scraped the footpeg & Centrestand....have you SEEN how high up they are on a GS????)

I got it "repaired" at Experience yesterday, & the weeping of diff oil is now a full on leak. The repair gets re-repaired on Friday.

I'll see you at the Pub for the wash-up, then it's silly season on the Base for the next month or so with the Cpls/Sgts piss-up, St Barbara's Day piss-up & the Big night out piss-up on consecutive thursdays

There are concerns guy's n gal's to the ability of some of the riders attending the ATNR.
I know its everybodys choice as to how they ride but...... Some of you racer hero types :scooter: the head down, knee down mono wheeling gods that you are need to be aware that hot on your heals are some young guns or born agains that have the bike capable of sticking with you down the straights but come unstuck when they get to the corner. I'm not for a second saying slow down or take responsibility for others but what I'm suggesting is split the ride into two halves (Dawn Its your call I guess), how about the quick guys/gals go off first and give the ginga a run for his money and the rest take off a minute later. It would hopefully take the (peer) pressure of some of the others to 'keep up' otherwise I can just see someone coming a real cropper soon.

Am I wrong or is the purpose of the ATNR to get a group of bikers together for a ride and a social afterwards, Its not an elitist group. I know of a couple of people I have suggested come for a ride with us turn me down because they have either heard what goes on or have experienced it for themselves and been 'put off'.

Happy to get shot down in flames but would prefer some genuine discussion on what I consider to be a good night out that I dont whant spoiled.

Nerp, but lets just say there were quite a few visits to the wrong side of the road by multiple people because of charging into corners thinking they're Rossi.

It would be nice to help others inability to ride to their own ability/speed. But then I may as well just take them pillion. I like riding, its fun.
There is a ride on wednesday for those who need Mentoring.

The mega few wouldve shown them how to squid properly!

but saying that, I was getting my knee down and down the odd wheelie...
The ATNR is not a race. Its funny when random people turn up and think it is.

Another funny thing, when you have a 3 dudes on sportsbikes in formation that have slowed down to 100 to go down some particular straights - some very smart people dont think as to why and decide to overtake and barrel down the straights at full whack:Pokey: kinda stupid really.

NOT shooting flames, but how would you propose to split the group?

Wont the knobs that think they can corner but can't also be the same ones that think they belong in the first group anyway?

I suppose finding candidates prepared to lead and tail end for each group from the masses at the briefing as we currently do, and the 1st group roles out first etc. I'll put my hand up and be happy to lead or tail end the second group........or the first for that matter :shit:

Yeah I thought of that too, I guess the answer is you can't but they might feel more comfortable being a quicker rider in the 2nd group rather than the accident waiting to happen in the first.

How about a radical innovation I came across a while back.. we could call the fast riders could challenge each other, go like bats out of hell, but do it together so the know they're not going to come across anyone of a radically different skill level (which obviously puts them ALL at risk).

We could call it a trackday (got a nice ring to it eh?). What do you think?

I reality - the group splits itself anyway if there's someone that wants to go haring off, and I'd be loathe to encourage it any more by formalising it. I've been on plenty of mixed rides (fast, medium and slow riders together) where everyone just filters into their respective spots - and I think it works well.

:

Exactly. For the last while we've been doing quite all right. The last thing we need is Ginge getting justification for doing what he's doing. We do not need or want people getting in the shite due to going loopy, so we have to establish ground rules for the ride prior to departure.

Was there a briefing last night? Were the rules established? Ultimately, each has to take responsibility for their actions, but FFS, don't endanger others. that's why we have a bad rep people.

Sorry dude,
Turn out on a dry day is about 20-30 bikes, more meet at the bar.
The ginger cop tends to hide in the bushes, pings you and then turns up at the bar with your ticket.
As mentioned a few pages back some riders go 'hard' and some take it easy others risk everything!
The brief is clear each night, one takes the lead, the second stops and points at each turn and pulls of after tail end charlie comes through, passes him and so it goes on until we get to the bar.
Meet at Shell westgate from 6:30, leave at 7pm, see you Thursday?

When I went to get my WOF yesterday, I was told that there are two cops who patrol the SH16 who are having a competition to see who can issue the most tickets. It was also said that there is a white Transit van with roof racks on being used by the cops as a radar vehicle, and a couple of cops a few km either side of it dish out the tickets.

This is all hearsay, of course, but perhaps there's no smoke without fire...

Erm why are you asking that on a public forum.

If you have a license, rego wof etc.. you would have nothing to worry about, hence wouldnt ask the question.

So its obvious to our police friends reading this thread, that you dont have a wof or rego and are intending to come on the ride.

I just wanted to know if there are often police encounters or not. It is easy to speed on a motorcycle, especially with a group of other motorcyclists around you... we all know that. I personally don't like getting ticketed. I also personally don't believe the police have so much spare time as to read Kiwibiker ATNR discussion, that is just too pathetic. I do not think it is unreasonable to ask that on a public forum.

You had better believe cops read this thread and target the ATNR [unfortunatley]. I think the record still stands at 6 licence losses in one night.

If you intend to go rip-roaring around and acting like a dick on a bike, there is a good chance Mr:Police: will be around the next corner with his anal probe all lubed up waiting.

If you can show some self-control and can enjoy a "social" (Note: Not Antisocial behaviour) get-together / ride, then you will be fine.

yeah but from what i have heard, the thursday night rides are doing speeds that equal loss of license. So how fast do you people actually ride?

It isnt rocket science.

(When I'm there - not sure how it runs when Im not??)
1. I conduct a pre-ride briefing.
2. I warn people of their speed every briefing (It would be interesting how many time Ive done it over the 3 years) and how many have lost their licences. Speed at your own risk and dont come crying if you lose it!
3. I explain how the pointer systems work and why we use them.
4. I point out who is leading and who is tail end charlie so there is no confusion.

So it is entirely up to the induvidual if they shall wish to speed (140kph+). I am comfortable to ride between 100-120kph (not just on the straights either!) and enjoy myself. Any twat with a wrist can go fast on the straights but when they get into the corners.....its a different story. I have been conducting these rides for over 3 years now and I have yet to get a ticket.
Go figure.

If you want to enjoy yourself without losing your licence, tag on behind me.

Generally as fast as they feel, but knowing that the cops are around the lead doesn't usually hit 'licence losing' speed.

At the end of the day it's actually really simple, if you dont want to speed then don't. A lot of the corners we go through are quite enjoyable at the speed limit, some are 'more fun' a little bit over... but it's your decision as to how you ride. There will be a pointer staying on the corners where you need to turn off, and they *should* be staying there until the tail end charlie comes through.

It's a lot more tame than it used to be back in 2005/2006 where it was quite literally 'win or bin' for a number of people that participated.

I haven't witnessed any ego's shining through with peoples riding lately, 99% of the time it is just people enjoying an evening ride through some twisty roads after a shit week at work/uni/on the dole.

No you can't keep up with the 600 and litre bikes, no matter how much you would like to think you can.
Making dickhead passing manouvres through the pack when it's just cruising isn't going to prove your manhood.
Your balls aren't any larger because you finished near the front by overtaking on the left through a 50k area. You may have noticed things getting a little uncomfortable, think about why, take clue.
Sure people notice that you finish near the front, but for all the wrong reasons. By all means show us your awesome skills - but not your stupidity.

He should consider himself lucky so far.

Showing up in full leathers with long white socks and 'cool' shoes looks stupid for a start.

Then there is the passing that Noel mentioned. A couple of other things he did lead to no less that 5 riders wanting to 'put him in his place' when we stopped at Diary Flat - luckily qkchk did the talking and all was fine afterwards.

There's no doubt he's 'fast', but he's doing it where 'it doesnt count', and to be honest I dont think there was anyone that was impressed (as in WOW that was awesome) with the way he was riding.

Common courtesy and NOT endangering others is generally expected. That said, everyone makes a mistake now and then or does something that upon reflection they perhaps shouldn't have done.

No reason why you can't raise it with the rider at the next stop either, most people are receptive to constructive criticism when approached on the quiet and will readily acknowledge and error of judgement.

The issue raised in this recent series of posts is not however about an isolated incident and could well lead to endangering others, not to mention himself.
Though in my view, his well being is his choice and it's not my place to tell others how they are to live (or not) their lives, provided they don't endanger others.

Don't understand what the fuss about 250's is? It's not like it's 180kph here...... there's no reason why a 250 cbr or zxr couldn't keep up right? if you've got some decent tyres on you can reel the big boys in on the turns and under braking- that's if you somehow can't keep up on the straights?

It's not a race track so why can't a 250 keep up?

Are you talking new or old Ninja 250's? Agreed the new ones are a bit pansy along with the hyoshits- can't really call it a sports bike... agreed they'd take some real wide open throttle to keep up with big boys but those 90's zxr's are good machines and have the turning and braking alright, that's for sure. And it's not like the ride is faster than 150kph, so why couldn't it keep up if the rider so much as knows where the throttle is?

Where are you drawing the line here?

The issue raised in this recent series of posts is not however about an isolated incident and could well lead to endangering others, not to mention himself.
Though in my view, his well being is his choice and it's not my place to tell others how they are to live (or not) their lives, provided they don't endanger others.

Sweet as Stranger... been on a few other group rides and wasn't expecting that, and stuff like staggered formation didnt seem to be evident.

Props to TEC/Silver&Flamed Ninja 250 (Peter?).
From what i saw (or didnt see...) he rode his own ride, not wringing the tits off the 2fiddy, and finished the ride (well, until Caltex Dairy Flat...where I left).

And to the two marked plod mobiles that left us alone

Staggered formation is only applicable/suitable for slow rides, or straightish wide roads (e.g., like in motorway processions). Once you get in the twisties, or narrowish country roads, then single lane spread out is more sensible.

It's not a race track so why can't a 250 keep up?

Sure, he's welcome to keep up.

But stop taking unnecessary risks, pissing people off and potentially endangering others to do so. If that is the only way he can keep up, he's going to come unstuck (one way or another), and as you may have read he came close to it last night.

+1
Too many focus on staggered formation to the exclusion of the number 1 rule when riding - ride your own ride. How the do you do that when you are in a set formation?

Cornering - you set up from the correct entry point regardless of your formation.
Visibility - you can generally be seen better if you are in the RH wheel track and generally have a better view of the road also.
Debris, pot holes, rough seal and tar bleed etc are usually more prevalent in the Lh wheel track.

Fuck it I ride my ride in my space. Treat me as a hazard and give me my space.

If his numberplate reads 66BZM then I can confirm that recently I searched his numberplate and rung his Mum hahahah......and yeah I'm serious [140kmh plus through Whangaparaoa rd on the median was the dumbest thing I have witnessed for a long time].

If that plate resembles the old school style (big and square like a waka paddle) then there is a good chance it is...

I agree...

But to me it felt like most of that ride wasn't very twisty...and when we got bunched up, behind i had my tail followed (and seemed to be their tail was followed too - yes i do check behind quite a bit...), and ahead i could see people all over the lane =/

DEFINTILEY ride your own ride and in your own space, but when there isnt (or doesnt seem to be...) the space or time (eg when bunched up, in 50/60/80kmh zones), some formation would have been...good? maybe i'm just a prude and overly cautious...

Again, my first time on the West ATNR, so wasnt too sure what to expect.

It's not a training ride and Dawn's not their mummy. It's not up to her to tell people how they should/must ride.
As I say, we should all be treating each other as a hazard.

If the guy behind is too close for my comfort and I don't feel like nailing it I simply pull over and/or wave them past, easy really. Sure I am likely to have a word with them at the next stop and politely request they desist.
DON"T LET SOMEONE ELSE DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU.
I waved the XT past me last night prior to some twisties, I knew that if he wanted to he would be quicker than me and I didn't want to hold him up or have him up my arse.

Consider the reasons for formation and would being in any sort of formation have alleviated the situation you describe? Sure you may have had additional room on the straight, but when the guy in front pulls into your line to set up for the corner all of a sudden your insurance policy (i.e. space) is gone anyway at the point you are most likely to need it. Too close is too close whether in formation or not.

Or are we talking GN250's here??

You've missed the point, and then agreed with the arguement we're having. There is no problem with '250's keeping up - i was on a 660cc single with 45hp - not a lot more than the 250's and i had no trouble sticking in there.

The problem with this particular rider was that he was 'keeping up' with the front runners at all costs. Like you said it wasn't on a race track, but he was doing his best to catchup to the front after being a back marker - which is a hard task on a 250.

To be honest i'd like to see the guy go round a track, seems like he could be a decent rider if he was focussed in the right direction. He'll need to get some boots first though!

I developed an embarrassing medical condition this week.
I went to see the woman who, with her sister, owns the Pharmacy up the road.
I told her I had an erection. That I had had it for 2 weeks and it wouldn't go away no matter what I did. I had been with lots of women, I had abused myself, ridden my Honda, thought terrible thoughts etc. and still it stayed up.
I asked her what she could give me for it.
She studied me for a while and then said she would just go and consult with her sister.
When she came back she said she had talked it over with her sister and they could offer me 20% of the equity of the business and 25% of the profit.

RIDE and BBQ SIZZLE

Troy at Motoworld Powersports has been extremely generous and has offered to fire up the BBQ for those on the ATNR. As some will know, Troy has been on quite a few ATNR's as well as some of his mates.

All those past, present and willing - are welcome to come along for a ride and have some saussies.

Ride will be as per norm but the finishing point will be at Motoworld.

The first 2009 ATNR will be on the 8th January. So either turn up or put up til then!

Now that's a shame as pulling down those cop and criminal roleplaying thingys would probably do us all a lot of good!!!

Personally I'd like to buy the guy a beer and get him onto a person to person level. Its so easy to condem the "them" but alot harder once you see the white of their smiles.

The cop's are not your freind.

The vast majority care not what any member of the general public has to say. They exist to ticket you and arrest you, not to have a cosy chat.

Fuck sake wise up people!

KTM all good now? Saw you blating past Motoworld as I was coming out....

Were you in the shop? heh I was round the back picking it up. It is all happy again. Only problem is they couldn't find out what was wrong so reset the ecu and it's all happy again.

I should be there tonight.

Mmm. Wonder who you would be turning to for some friendly help in the event of a misfortune. Or would you be turning them away because they only exist to ........etc

If he comes and he see's we are not a bunch of baby eating morcrons (sorry mate) it may improve things for the ATNR.

Morcs your a brave man coming out like that  I know a few guys 'in the big house' who would like to catch up when they are released next year :buggerd:
