Hi all, quick intro Danny is my name, 28yrs old tomorrow, born and bred here in Upper hutt, lovely wife and 3 boys, never riddena bike in my life but feel like now is the time to start learning how.

Been reading this forum hard out for last week or so and am really impressed withthe knowledge and range of opinions.

So far my hero has to be buckbuck for his staying power whilst on his learners, so many of us would be keen to get right in the deep end but his common sense approach looks like the path i intend to follow.

From what ive read im looking at doing the Roadsafe BHS and probally also their maintenance and any training courses they offer.

Bike choice is leaning towards the Hyosung GT250R as im a big guy and its big 250cc bike.

Oh well thats all for now. C u in hte forums and once i get my License and bike ill hopefully meet a few of you on the road, till then keep an eye out for my Silver Commodore Cage - ill be the one leaving plenty of room for lane splitting on my commute to Wellington each day.

You've got the right idea - take it slowly and build into it as your skill improves. The more you ride the better you'll get. There is usually (probably when it gets warmer) a Wednesday night ride that has some couple of very experienced patient guys heading it - so lots of good riding advice and other noobs to share the ride with.

Oh and Welcome.

All the best Bull - welcome to the fraternity.

For my tuppence worth I'd suggest something cheaper than the Hyosung (they're all pretty new and haven't lost too much value yet) a good ol' Honda Spada is about the sime size. I got a nearly new VTR (which is frankly too small for me - my knees touch my chin from time to time) this has been too expensive and I've regretted it in the 2 spills I've had.

Best of luck.

Welcome to the site.. good luck with the bike hunt.. as Big McJim said: you may want to look for something cheaper.. you'll have time when you're on your full to spend all your money :D - I'm 6.4, and I sit very comfortably on my 86 Kwaka Ninja 250, and a sad thing happened tonight: I realised I can't fit properly on a ZX-14.. my knees sit to high.. :(

Hi Danny and welcome:sunny:

Being a newbie, you might want to consider talking to a mentor from the website in your area, see: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/mentors.php?u=&pp=15&page=2. These people are very experienced and will freely give their time to help you to develop your road skills and general bike competence. That's how supportive the site members are!

cheers

Gday and welcome to the site!

Seeing I've recently been looking for bikes thought I'd share my experiences. I'm 6'2", although only 75kg and the 200* gsx250 was quite tall people friendly. I also fit quite well on my krr150, although I think it would be a bit small for anyone heavier than me. The naked GT250 Hyosungs can be found for quite a good price second hand as well :scooter:

cheers for the welcome all, im 6 foot and about 125kg so thats the main reason for the hyosung. Im def not a speed freak so the hyosung being able to do the limit suits me fine, main purpose will be commute to work and the occasional medium - long ride in the weekends for a bit of fun. Anyone got some good sites for gear etc in nz? i only really seem to see trademe and quasimoto as options so far - or is there a reccomended wellington/lower hutt/upper hut bike store that does good deals?

Welcome aboard :scooter:

I just turned 31 and hit the 2 wheels about 6 weeks ago ............you'll never catch me in a cage again unless picking my son up from school.

Whatever you buy make sure it not too flash till you get your skills up........just in case :)

Best place I found for new gear is the Motomail outlet shop..........but its in Auckland

I can highly recommend TSS Motorcycles in Cuba Street, Alicetown. :first: See Richard or Stewart. They have a pretty good range in there and are EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. Will also beat anyone else on price (unless it's someone is offering a sooper dooper deal). Hubby and I just kitted outselves out there and got good prices. They will get anything in for you too. I'd go back there any day. Unlike that other place in the Hutt where we spent 40 minutes trying on gear and didn't even get a hello...

Welcome aboard Bull.

Have you considered the Hornet 250. Not as much top speed as the rice rocket 250 4's, but loads of down low torque. Frame (iirc) is the same as the hornet 600, so should be plenty big enough. Nekkid bike, so no expensive plastics to repair if it decides on a lie down on ya sometime.

Once your sorted be sure to hook up with the wellington crew. There a good bunch with heaps of experience.

Oh and happy birthday.

Welcome aboard the site. Sounds like you are on the right track with regards to bike and learning. TSS are worth a visit if you are looking for gear, tho all the shops will give you a deal if you get the right salesperson - shop around.
See you on a ride sometime.

Have you considered the Hornet 250.
On reflection this is probably what I should have got as a 250, but didn't. Expensive though....

Welcome! I'd personally go for something a bit older to start off with - I wrote off my first road bike within 2 months :o would have been gutted if I'd spent a load of dosh on it. It also takes a little while to learn the little things like how steep an angle/soft ground you can park on before it will fall off it's stand and smash the fairings etc

Cheers for the birthday wishes, looks like ill be heading to TSS for a look then once ive got my license.

And Skelstar yeah it does look like a mufti cop car, which is good on the open road - cages in front see me in rear mirror and slow down - maybe i should send an invoice to the police for doing their job LOL.

again thanks for the welcome - i feel right at home allready

Hi all, quick intro Danny is my name, 28yrs old tomorrow

Gidday Bull, hey there congrats on your 28th today.

Shop around, and look at your immediate, medium and longterm needs and desires for a motorcycle.

Seriously, talk to a few guys on here about naked verses flared bikes for a starter bike, and also if seek some good feedback from them about the different bike manufacturers bikes in the 250 cc range.

Remember the whole graduated licence process will take some time, and in particular where and how you will want to gain your experience as a Learner can be crucial, particularly in your approach. Stepping out of a cage and onto two wheels and doing the daily work commute - look at it very carefully. The Roadsafe BHS is of course a must for your Learners and also as mentioned seek out a mentor from this site when you embark on your two wheeled journey.

Thanks for your comments in your opening thread, much appreciated and look forward to following your progress.

Heads Up and Enjoy

Heya Buckbuck, cheers for the welcome and you deserve every bit of praise you get. Im definitely not going to be commuting to work on 2 wheels till at least February - got to drop my youngest off to kohanga each morning. But come Feb next year hell be at school and i hopefully would have done a fair bit of learning - and be almost due for restricted license. My training ground will be the back roads of Upper Hutt least till im confident to take on a bit more traffic. Ive got to admit its the styling of the Hyo that has me hooked and quite a few good comments from around the world in forums etc, seems the biggest negatives are people just poking fun at the new bike on the block

Dont buy a flared bike...you'll be out there riding thinking you are so cool, but your kids will hate you and will be dying inside with embarrasment.;)

Welcome to this site of self-opinonated, narrow-minded, ranting and biased bike-crashing bunch of mental retards.

Listen to their advice, some of it is fact and personal experience, the rest is shit, your job is to figure out which is which.

Enjoy your riding.

Gudday!

Hey, don't worry about it - I'm 34 and getting into riding (though to be fair, I did some doolallying when I was younger!). I know exactly where you're coming from. I did the whole research process - checking up on bikes, reading Hough's Proficient Motorcyling, browsing as much info on the forums here, etc, etc :sherlock:

So, safely enjoy your ride and I'll be interested how your experiences are going along too!

.

Huh, speak for yourself...

Welcome Bull, get as much advice as you can on the type of bike for you, there will be a lot so sift through it carefully and have a good look around. Remember, its your choice as to what you end up riding, a very personal choice based on many factors, that I am sure all here will respect.

Well went down to see the team at TSS Motorcycles yesterday, was bloody good - they showed me around all the gear and gave opinions and answered all my questions (coz there was lots), so now that i know there is a shop willing to help as much as possible im even more convinced to hurry up and get the BHS and licnesing done, hopefully within next fortnight i can get that all sorted.

Cheers All

Bull, glad you found TSS helpful, they were fantastic with us.

I know this has been posted elsewhere but there is a great website with the driver licencing tests online which you can do and it scores your answers, good for learning before you go and do your learner test. (But remember that it only does the straight questions, there are others with pictures and give way rules that are only in the road code book). It's here (http://www.drivinginstructor.co.nz/main_frame.php?goto_page=courses/test_menu.php&_title=Courses&sub_menu=common/sub_courses.php)

I've not long had my learners and I've found riding with hubby and another couple from Welly really helpful in boosting the confidence.

Welcome bull, you can borrow a copy of the motorcycle roadcaode from wellington public libary aswell as the websites listed by the guys here.

I bought my bike and gear at TSS and had a good experiance too, as for not buying the faired verion of the gt250r i just couldnt bring myself to do it, it just looks better.

Yes the bike has already been dropped but it was cheap as chips to fix including the fairing, parts were easy to get and the guys at TSS sorted for me, no stress.

Happy buying.
