I guess it had to happen eventually.
Icy weather this morning when I got up -3°C in Upper Hutt so I took it easy.
Got all the way through the cold roads and traffic this morning and just as I am heading down the motorway from Ngauranga Flyover to Aotea Quay the traffics all stopped.
No worries, just lanesplit through the traffic as usual.
Then this guy in a car with trailer on decides to change lanes in front me into the middle lane (I'm splitting between left and middle lane) and I swerve into the gap he's left.
Argh! Then the bugger sees me and turns back into the lane again!!!
A pull on the bar, a tap on the brake and then - woah! The bike's on the ground and I'm under it...
Fortunately it goes over the tope of me and I roll to the side of the road.
Creep in the car in front of me keeps going but the car behind me stops to see if I'm okay. "Hey mate - awesome lowside - better than on the telly mate!" Yeah, cheers guys...
So the damage. WT will hopefully post some picks as it's in Welly Motorcycles now, but here's what I can remember.
Lots of road rash down the left hand side. No left front indicator. No right mirror. Fork stanchions bent right back. Front tyre is flat. No front brake (hopefully just the lines burst). Nothing that can't be fixed...
Helmet is scratched all up the chin and visor (replace). Jacket has scratches and holes in it. Toe of the boot has a huge rip in the leather. Gloves scratched. Watch ($1500 Citizen Pilots watch :( ) ruined. Cellphone scratched.
And me? A rather large hematoma is developing on my thigh and my ankle is turning a nice shade of blue/black... Rubbed lots of Arnica Cream and Antiflamme into the sore bits.
Still, any crash you walk away from can't be too bad, especially a 70km/hr lowside through three lines of rush hour traffic.
Guess I'll be off the road for a few weeks now... Looking for some FZR1000 forks to replace mine. Everything else I can patch up once I get the bike home...
Cheers to Nev, Mark Dunn and MatthewT who stopped to check me out.

Ouch! Done the same thing myself in the rain at about 40kph. Glad to hear you're still in one piece. Filtering with less-than-perfect traction conditions is always a risky business; I now try and keep to a speed differential where I can always pull up suddenly behind a random lane-changer, rather than having to swerve.
Looking forward (in my usual macabre, rubber-necking way) to the gory photographs of rider and steed damage. Take it easy mate, GWS.

Bummer, Dude. Crashing sux, big time!
Hope you heal quickly.
The bike is easy enough to heal (just expensive and a damned nuisance).
I guess the fact you were lane-splitting means that whatever the trailer guy was doing is irrelevant, seeing he wasn't involved in the crash?
By the way - I never wear my watch (also an expensive Citizen) on my bike just in case I crash (which I did last year). Besides the possibility of it getting trashed, there's also a strong likelihood of it wrecking your wrist!
When I crashed last year, it was similar, in that I anticipated what the guy was doing (pulled out in front of me), acted accordingly (slowed down), then he did something sensible (pulled into the kerb). I decided he'd seen me, then he did something unanticipated (cracked a U-turn). Unfortunately, I hit him AND the road...
Just goes to show - you need to expect the unexpected, and anticipate some very stupid behaviour.
[Easy to make with the platitudes and "after the event wisdom", isn't it?]
Well, at least you were sensible and wearing good gear. Hope you heal quickly. (I've just about stopped hurting after 11 months...)

Sounds like the bike might be a write off! Hope you have insurance dude.
Thankfully i dont have to travel on motorways, they are good fun but scare the hell out of me, your a brave man lane splitting at 70kph.
Im impressed by you guys that ride pretty much in any weather, rain, cold etc, im too much or a wimp.

Hi K14. Back at home now after getting my ankle checked out at the hospital. I have talked to my insurance broker and he says there is no way I can claim for anything on my house and contents insurance.
I have my house and contents with Vero. I also have the bike insured TPFT with them as well.
Anyone here have any experience claiming for bike gear on house and contents?
Not too happy about a stuffed helmet, gloves, jacket and watch if they are not claimable.
At least I only have a very sprained ankle and a corked thigh where the bike landed on it. And I got a free flight (if only for about 10 metres) ;)

Can't comment on your Vero policy, of course, but I know that my AMI contents policy covers household goods up to $2K being transported. Your clothing (ie, the gear and helmet) should certainly count as 'household goods' if it's destroyed in an accident.
Of course, if the Vero contents policy doesn't have an 'in transit' clause, you're buggered. It'd be worth having a good read through the policy yourself, though, I reckon.

I've claimed *ahem* once or twice in recent times for riding gear on my house and contents policy. Your policy needs a provision that it covers your posessions while away from your house (if that makes any sense). I'm with state and the last time I claimed I rang them up and claimed for helmet, jacket, kevlar jeans, boots and gloves. They took the details on the phone and within 10 minutes of starting the claim I was told the money would be in my account tomorrow (and it was). A few years ago I was knocked off by a dork that didn't give way at a roundabout and also claimed on my watch, in that case it just needed a new face (Seiko World Timer).

My gf's camera was stolen out of my car last year, and her mum didn't seem to have any problems getting the claim filled and a replacement camera. Was about $1500 worth iirc, even included a new bag and camera strap, etc.

That's OK if you've already lost your "No Claims Bonus" or have some ridiculously small excess, OR are making a biggish claim.
Like David, I had the opportunity to claim for damage to my gear when making a claim against the braindead mutant who trowelled my VFR, but I foolishly didn't claim my helmet as it was only scratched from lying on the road. Now I want to replace it, and can't afford to. :weep:
My expensive jacket repairs (it is now a strange mutant beast of part Cordura, part Kevlar, and part leather) were paid for by the previous fuckwit who didn't know what mirrors and indicators are for.

You have to be joking. I had a bin last year and wrecked my jeans, shoes, gloves and shoei helmet.
I rang up my parents insurance company which my stuff is covered under and they paid out no worries. The company was NZI. I rang up one day and told them the value of the gloves, jeans, shoes and helmet. I had to get a quote from the bike shop for my helmet, which i faxxed to them, but the rest of the stuff the lady just took my word for. She even asked if my jacket was damaged and how much that was worth, but I didn't worry about it. They paid out the $1300 or so that it was worth like 3 days later, I couldn't believe it. They didn't have any worries, I told them that I crashed my bike and they didn't bat an eyelid.
I am pretty sure that you can claim for them. If you are in a car accident and your computer in the boot gets broken, then they will pay for that, this is basically the same principal. Get back to them about it.
Ohh yeah forgot to say that my bike insurance also has provision for $1000 of gear damage.
Do you have bike insurance?

Not too happy about a stuffed helmet, gloves, jacket and watch if they are not claimable.
I recall a while back that ACC would replace damaged helmets, as they didn't want us continuing to wear something that might not be up to any further spills. Damaged helmets were sent by ACC to a crusher for complete deletion.
Could be worth hitting them up about your helmet and gear ? Fek, we pay enough in levies.
Nah, that stopped happening a few years back. Think it got too expensive.
Great attitude Simon. You only have two choices when shit happens. let it upset you or accept it and move on. Always look on the bright side as they say [I mean sing]. Some good advice here on the insurance. I claimed on my parents house contents years ago (when I lived at home of course)no trouble for helmet, jacket... Good luck getting the beast back together. Lets meet under better circumstances next time.

You're on Mike. I reckon if we tie some rope to the front wheel and get all the Upper Hutt Boys to pull at once we can straighten those forks real fast...
Yeah I heard tonight that John works with you. I was getting the hard word relayed to me over the phone from Gini who was on the phone to her mum. Something about defensive driving courses...
Still, its only my third bin in twenty years... not too bad. That's one highside, one lowside and a superman off a traffic island into a lamp-post. All three have occurred in the month of June too - not my favourite month I guess.
According to the guys in the van behind me who helped me get the bike of the road it was most spectacular! Lucky those fizzers are tough.
Has it put me off riding? Not a chance. You gotta fall off sometime.
I'm just surprised I managed to throw a bike down the road doing 70 ks in rush hour traffic. Go on, flame away... I can take it. :)
Anyway, thanks to Neurofen and Lagavulin I'm fine.
Bike arrives home tomorrow night. If you want to come around and see it send me a pm and I'll give you my address. I'm home all weekend except Saturday morning (kids rugby).

Takes skill and commitment to perform like that must be the practice that you have previously had :D. I will take you up on your offer though, both hehe

IMHO splitting at any speed greater than 50km dramatically increases your chances of a) Getting caught by "you know who", b) Getting wiped out by inattentative individuals, c) Scaring a driver into taking emergency action d)loss of income.
/Rant_mode
For me its an age thing, I can't afford the repairs, can't afford the loss of income, and as for the associated pain I have done my time with that. However there is still the thrill as you whip past people, push the gap, split for 11kms including past merging traffic, Ah the thrill of the chase. :)

On the plus side, I have just got off the phone with Vero. Turns out, all my gear is covered by the house contents policy after all...
so I now have to get quotes for a new helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots which were all damaged in the drop.
As for the watch, it still goes so I will get Capital Watch Services to look at a quote for a repair on the scratched face, and broken strap.
Now if only the bike was that easy. It arrives home tonight thanks to White Trash.
After rugby tomorrow I will take the fairings off, remove the wheel, brakes, forks and see what damage we have.
WT mentioned to me that there's a crowd up in Cambridge that can straighten fork stanchions - looks like that might be the way to go rather than the five guys pulling on the forks bit.
Things are looking up already ! And the sun's just come out in Upper Hutt :):):):)

Scotts fzr is a 5 speed, not 6. And the gearbox has "problems" anyway, so you wouldn't want it. Apparently the 6 speed cluster from an fz700 or 750 is a drop in.
