Picked up a flyer for the Pissed Penguin Rally at Wilsher Bay domain, Kaka Point.
This year it is on 23-24 September. Pre paid entries $20, on the day $25.
Bike cruise leaves about 12:30 which I presume is on the Saturday (can anyone confirm this). The number for more info is 03 412 8240
Photos and reports from last year looked like it was a good rally.

Been on it a couple of times, the worst aspect of it has been the weather - and at that time of year you've got to expect that.

Will be going to this next one, got time off :2thumbsup so keep fingers crossed the weather turns out dry.

They leave the rally site at K.P. about 12:30 on the Saturday for the run, they use to do a loop through Balclutha-Clydevale-Clinton and back - or those who didn't mind mud and dirt use to go through the back road to Owaka before heading back to K.P.

This year I beleive the route includes Kaitangata.

I wasn't planning on it (it's a long way for one night for and old fella like me :violin:) but how could I refuse such a gracious invitation? I'll get back to SD (in other words I need to check with the boss :o )

Those dates are the first weekend of the school holidays which could be a problem for me. I plan to at least go down, pay the money and just do the afternoon cruise and head home before becoming unsafe. Not as good as the overnighter but better than not going at all. Like scumdog I could provide some friday night beds and lead a pretty good round about route to get down to the rally the next day (especially if can handle a few gravel roads)

Ruralman

I have had an article with photos printed in the latest Kiwi rider mag which has just hit the stands yesterday - it is on the first Catlins Coast trailride with some photos of the area around Kaka Point where this rally will be held.

May come down on the sat morning with a mate....depends on work and how the funds are....read as if the missus gives me parole......

Ruralman

The date for the Pissed Penguin is getting close - Sept 23-24. Any Kb's coming down. At this stage I'm still planning on going down for the Sat ride and not staying the night, but there's an increasing chance I may be able to stay (just have to find a tent now).
Anyone needing a Friday night stopover let me know - especially if you fancy a rather backroads route to get down there on Sat morning (about 45mins ride from here if you go direct)
The weather can be a pain - spring time in the South and all that - or it could be wonderful. If it turns to shit during/after the sat. group cruise then I'm definitely coming home and can provide shelter for a few others.
There is some good Motel accomodation close to the site as well

OK, I'll be there with Crissy-Bimbo, MAYBE on the Friday night as well Saturday night if the weather is good, depends if Mr Sensible gets leave from his lovely doris (or brings her down) and wants to stay Friday night at Chez Scumdog.

I've got the Friday off work, I'm allowed to go, I haven't made up my mind...

I'll leave the decision till next week, can't rush these things.

Jeez scumdog we're not exactly getting rushed with replies to this one - has word got out about Sth Otago's spring weather?
We might end up having to ride there together - and I'm not sure whether non waving Harley riders are even allowed on the same bit of road as Transalps??
We'll have to watch them when we're not looking in case they breed - imagine that it would be like, like, like, ............. one of those Buell Ulysses things?!!
AND it would definitely have been the Transalp on top!!! - can you imagine getting the front end of a Harley up enough to mount anything?

Seriously tho it twood be good to meet the man behind the mask so I'll catch up with you on the cruise if not before.

I'm going to give the PP a miss this year, catch you at the Magpie (or if not sooner)

scumdog
19th September 2006, 17:36
So can we have ahead count of KBers going to the PP and what night they're heading there?
Maybe we could arrange a rendezvous somewhere.

Ruralman
19th September 2006, 21:09
Coming down on Sat morning (borrowed a tent so that looks like the nights buggered now), in time to set up the tent and then head out on the cruise.
Will be riding down with the crazy pom - woodybee - who's looking forward to your next dancing class Scumdog.
Would be useful to spread the word about this site a bit when we're there - so we can use it for planning local rides.
I'll be on a blue Transalp, woodybee isn't sure what she'll be riding yet. Where to meet - is there a BBQ going for lunch or something. Would be handy to have a KB'r flag.
How about everyone just finds Scumdog and we group up from there?

Ruralman
20th September 2006, 10:36
Second thoughts about a meeting spot - how about in Milton and then ride down together? Would give Scumdog a chance to get his bike warmed up before he gets to Kaka Point.
Meet outside the Westside cafe which is beside the BP service station at the South end of town - about 10:30? - if you get there earlier then just enjoy a coffee till others show up.

If you're heading to the rally from Milton you'll have to right past Chez Scumdog, look for the flag on your right when you get your first views of Big River Town.

By chance you too don't live right beside the highway do you Ruralman??

No not by the highway - distant relations with the same surname do - I'm just off SH8 on Round Hill Rd/Manuka Hill Rd. 1.64km from the Lawrence end.
I'm wondering whether I should put a post on the General bike stuff to see whether some members around Dunedin would even just come down for the day and the cruise (weather forecast for Sat looks OK, wee bit wet possibly on Sunday) - but I get the impression it'll be like flogging the proverbial dead horse. Might be more use promoting this site a bit at the rally.

Got the T/A serviced in Balc today - is it the Canadian flag I should have been looking for?
Had a PM from Oldrider, may see him there depending on weather, will try to meet up with him in Milton. Sounds like you'll be away down there before we get to you but we'll drop by just in case.

Yep, today it was the Canadian flag, I vary it with a Scotish flag, a USA flag, a NZ flag or a Harley flag depending on my mood and what's happening in the world.

Oh, and I WAS home too!

Ok then I've got the right place. Just heard from woodybee, her bike ain't going to be ready in time so she's coming here on 4 wheels and will pillion down with me. Not sure where we'll pack everything but I'm sure with a bit of No8 and bunder twine we'll figure something out.
What sort of stuff other than tent/bag/groundmat do you need to take to this thing? Do you need mugs etc?

Mugs? there'll be enough drunken mugs there without bringing more!

Seriously, they are not a bad idea as you may need them for the coffee/tea as a reviver the morning after.

But yeah, tent GOOD sleeping bag and a groundmat (preferably one of those 'self-inflating' mattress type things:yes: :niceone: ) are the essentials.
A shoulder bag to cart camera and booze etc is advisable and warm walk about clothing also a good idea - this site gets cold as it's in a natural hollow - but there are fires to stand around.

Well, went to the P.P , got to the site at Kaka Point and a few minutes later Oldtimer, Ruralman and Woodybee arrived, we set-up camp (with a lot of hilarity at those not so familiar with assembling their tents).

The weather was A1, about 18 degrees and no wind and then we set off on the ride, stopped at Kaitangata for a small ale and a sit in the sun plus a bit of a look-see at all the bikes.
An hour there then off around Lakeside Road towards SH1, a good winding road but Sword (non KBer) got run off the road by a dick that couldn't keep his car on the correct side of the road. Sword had to get his shoulder pinned in Dunner hospital and his bike was a bit bent and in his words "all the sticky-out bits were wiped off".

We all gathered again at Garvan Homestead halfway between MIlton and Balclutha for another breather'n'ale then onto a last stop at the Rosebank Lodge in Balclutha before heading to the site again.

The bands cranked up, the brazier lit up (saw a guy nearly fall into one while it was going full noise) and everybody boogied and partied until 10pm when thousands of dollars of fireworks were set off by a professional firework dude down at the beach, very spectacular and LOUD and great to watch but then skys opened up but no worries, the organisers had two massive marquees set up so we 'danced' and gas-bagged away until about an hour or so the rain stopped.

Cb and I headed off to Camp KB at about 2am, can't speak for the others.

Sunday dawned calm'n'sunny but cool, all KBers were in good health (unlike some around us and we were all gone by 9:30.

Pics taken by some, hope to post some.

P.S. The ride was a great idea, stopped us from sitting around getting shikkered TOO early in the day and gave us something to do on a nice day.

Yes, I went to the Pissed Penguin Rally last weekend and:

1). Had a fantastic ride down.

2). Met up with old friends and met a lot of new nice people.

3) Enjoyed a great cruise around local territory, some arranged, some on impulse.

4). Enjoyed the overnight camp experience again after quite a break from it.

5). Really enjoyed my ride home to boot, what more could one ask for?

I left home at 07:00 and it was as cold as charity, a good frost in the valley and I was feeling it. A quiet but steady ride down to Duntroon and then over the top of the Dansey Pass (08:00/101km, fantastic view) and met the first bit of wind, it blew quite hard until almost down to the Pub then it all went calm again. Scooted quietly through past the pub and out onto the better part of the road through there and turned left heading off towards the Pig Route at Kyeburn. Quick turn left then right and off down the main route to Dunedin (via Middlemarch) to the turn off to Lee Flat. For those who don't know this piece of road, it is a sports bike dream road, fast and curvaceous like a well built woman, as absolutely satisfying a ride as you can get. I kept my tyres hard enough for this part and soft enough for the gravel. (I don't like having to stop and to adjust them). Middlemarch service station was "not" open as I went through! (I was carrying 5 litres in a side box anyway). 09:00/200km and time to turn right to Lee Flat, across the bridge over Lake Mahinarangi up the hill turn right for Lawrence then left for Waitahuna and a bit of an altercation with the only farmer I came in contact with all morning as he tried to hold me up while he straggled about 2/3km of flighty hoggets strung out along the road as far as we could see and beyond.
He didn't want me to proceed as I might scare them off through the fences! I was not amused told him to fix his fucking fences and rode on through with him hurling abuse. None of them went out through the fences and I enjoyed the challenge of getting through as fast as I could without that happening but still giving the hoggets a bit of a work out. I rode down the grass on the edge with best looking fence on the opposite side. ( I was brought up on farms and have some stock sense) Great ride back through the same route Ruralman and I rode on the "Black and Blue ride report" which he wrote up last week. Arrived at Ruralmans house at 10:20/285kms checked the time and mileage and was about to fat it on past when I caught site of him and his bike still there, so I turned around and went back. Wallah, he and Woodybee were just trying to find space on their bike for their two tents, when along came John and solved the problem! We tied the tents onto my bike and we were off to the rally.
We rode through to Balclutha via the Manuka gorge just below Ruralmans property. This has to be one of the most delightful short twisty bits of road you could ever wish for, shear magic. We fueled up at Balclutha and headed out to Kaka point and the rally site and pitched out tents right next non other than KB's own "Scumdog" and Chrissy! Many thanks to Chrissy for helping me find my new tent "instructions" and for helping me erect it properly. At this point I lost all interest in time and it shall not be mentioned again from here on.
So that was the ride Down to my first Pissed Penguin. The pic is post arrival, prior to departure for the aranged ride out. Cheers John.

Sorry to hear the accident we heard all the sirens etc for was to one of the cyclists.

Oh dear, sorry. That explains the date. Not that it would particularly matter, probably. Quote saying 'a website talks of the Penguin Rally (no Pissed in community paper) as an entertaining blah blah blah" would be vague enough not to be noticeable.

But I do find this site a bit hard to negotiate, so I doubt that I will find this year's comments.
