Well now comfirmed that I will be headed down to Christchursh for a few days so wondering if anybody keen for a meet up/ride? Dates not confirmed yet but hoping for around the first weekend in September so if peaple a bit farther south ( Scumdog, Virago, Jantar...) can't get up then let me know now if you're keen so I can work things out.
Also what are the conditions of the roads down that way around that time of year? Will have have to worry about much ice?

Firstly the ice - if there's a frost in the morning then you take care till its gone - at that time of year it is getting warmer and the frosts lighter and generally they're gone much earlier. If there's been a clear night and a light frost then just be prepared when you come into dark bits of road that don't see the sun till late.
You're not going to come all the way down from Papamoa and then just stop in ChCh are you?? Apart from the POrt hills its the most boring place to ride a road bike. If you want to meet some of the Southern members then get on your bike and head South.

Speight's AleHouse. The one near the new railwaystation. That's sorta central. City ones are too awkward for parking etc. There's a Harrington's on the corner of Fitz and Gloucester. Think it's still there. Unless they have off street parking I'd give that area a miss. I'd've got up too the SD one but did not see the thread until too late.

The 'Riviera of the South' is basically inland from Dunedin - not a day trip from Christchurch (not unless you like >1000km in a day)

OK guys, Pub should be one that is central city but hopefully not too crowded with pleanty bike parking (read big footpath) say 6pm friday night?
As for a ride, reading my motorcycle map of NZ, the banks penninsula looks fun. Start out in Chch City and head Via Main Rd to Sumner then Ewans Pass to Summit. Join in on Gebbies pass rd and either ride through to Motukarara for a feed or turning right when we join Gebbies and stoping in Teddington.
From Teddington
I'de like to ride out to Diamond Harbor aswell before finally heading back to Chch.
IT's not the full ride in here just parts that looked interesting with a relativly short ride time as some have things they need to do later that day.

Not much chance of finding a quiet pub with heaps of parking in the central city on a Friday night although I suppose if you snare one car park you'll fit 6 or so bikes into it. I guess all it would take is for a couple of bikes to get a couple of parks wherever about 5 pm and keep feeding the meter.
Alternatively there's always the Parklands Tavern. Fairly quiet and heaps of parking in the trees where the cages can't go. Oh yeah ... it's only 3 minutes walk from my place but that has nothing at all to do with my suggestion. :dodge:

Well it's not in the Central City. It's in the north east of the city ... on the corner of Mairehau Rd and Inwoods Rd to be precise. It's a couple of kilometres down Mairehau Rd past Burwood Hospital but would be dead easy for anyone coming into Chch from the north to find.

Nope, wouldnt suit alot of people dude. Would be about the same as going out to Harringtons in Belfast travel wise for heaps of people. 15 to 20 min from the city according to the maps and a hell for those coming from hornby or any of the other southern suburbs.
Something alot more central is better.

Thought about the Bealey ave Ale House. But parking there sucks. Drive past on a week night and it seldom looks like a free park.
Still recon the Ale House over by Bunnings is the best bet. It's not quite in town and yet still close enough that the CBD is literally 2 minutes away. There's also no shortage of parking.

Hmmm. How about a Saturday or Sunday afternoon KB 'information gathering' ride around all the suggested venues to establish the most appropriate? Seems the only fair way. Of course volunteers would have to be called for to sample a (small) beer at each location ... purely as a quality assessment exercise. To ensure the volunteers retain their ... umm... 'objectivity, perhaps it should be limited to about half a dozen venues?
(Or is this altogether too organised and contrary to the spirit of motorcycling?)

Then first street on left at the lights, Troup Dr, you've now arrived at Tower Junction.

Name changes are good - keeps everybody on their toes and you've just gotta love the confusion it causes as well.
There's nothing sensible about buying a Harley especially after receiving the latest Harley price list in the mail today, bit out of my price range.

Lol Sniper I figured we would just ride around untill we saw a bar with a bunch of bikes parked outside.
That's how I found the pub we Tauranga crew meet at.
Hmm, remind Sniper it's your task to find Blenheim Rd ;)
Here's Speights Ale House website (http://www.speights-alehouse.co.nz/).
It has pictures so you know what to keep an eye out for and what to look forward to.

To some degree that also happens when people change their avatar's.

You just trying to confuse people? This website is for the pub in Bealey Ave, but you've already posted directions to somewhere near Hornby???
Anyway, I thought the local was the Wheatsheaf!!

Hmm, yeah, oops, my bad, it is for the wrong pub because that pub doesn't have a website, however, the pictures do look like the Tower Junction pub.
Hornby! :killingme, Tower Junction is in Riccarton, directly in front of the Addington Railway Station.
Wheatcheif,,, Is that at the Weetbix factory up near Northlands Mall? As you can tell, visiting pub's isn't something that I do

just found this thread but its a bit late now - i would have the thought the blues bar would be the obvious choice for a central location as its the only place in town u can get in with a leather jacket
someone mentioned al's bar - there is a jimi hendrix tribute on sunday with billt tk and kenny ackroyd (smoking jacket). not a bad way to spend a sunday afternoon

I got back to Dunedin mid-afternoon yesterday - the wind was a bit of a problem near the end of the trip. One brief moment of excitement before leaving Christchurch, when a dick-head cager decided to make a right turn at a roundabout, from the left lane. I was in the right lane, and he nearly took me out.
Great meeting so many of the Ch-ch crew on Friday night.
Hoping Waylander got away okay today. I don't envy his trip north in this southerly blast - although at least he'll have a tail wind!
Waylander
19th September 2006, 19:27
There was a tail wind?!?!?! Shit man I had nothing but head winds all the way up to Picton!! Funny thing is no matter what direction I turned, it was always a head wind!
Love the bike and no idea what the reveiws are talking about when they say it handles like a bus... Was stable as no matter what speed I did in the corner.
Anyway, great to meet all y'all and glad you made it south safe Virago. Hope ya missus enjoys the new pack rack.
Sorry about the dissorginazation for saturday and the ride that didn't happen. Ended up having to change the oil, coolent and get the chnge of ownership, warrant, rego taken care of.
