G'day. I'm a transplanted Aussie just moved to Napier to work. Love the place and I'll be replacing my KTM that I sold prior to moving before Xmas.

So I've noticed that some rules here are more liberal than in Oz and I was wondering what the requirements for regoing dirt bikes here are.

Can you fit up lighting kits to Mxers? What other options are there to full road reg for of-road use?

As long as the bike has all the legal requirements - lights, indicators, brake lights, road legal tyres etc and passes the compliance tests. If the bike has not been road registered in NZ within 12 months of its importation it can take a while to get it VINned and road registered (over a month for my bike).

My XT wasn't a full MX bike but it had been used as a strictly off-road bike from the get-go. It had all the road-legal shit except for the tyres so it required new tyres, compliance test and reVINning - involving contacting Yamaha NZ and mucking about for ages.

Well worth it tho' - I got the bike I wanted.

Gareth, yes you're wrong. It's a contraction of Greg in Oz that I use on other forums. Since I'm not in Oz any more I changed it. I'm a 5th generation Aussie.

AFAIK it's the same as a standard warrant (all the road legal shit working, no structural rust, no dangerous fixtures, yada yada) plus they strip the brakes right down and check them thoroughly.

Most vehicles that perform the function for which they are designed should pass - most are designed to be able to stop... :devil2:

Welcome Gino. Check with your local Vehicle Testing Station (VTNZ) and they can give you all the lowdown what's required for VINning/registering a bike. Not all VTNZ's do it tho so maybe ring first?

Or you could just buy one that already is road registered.

If you're looking at another KTM all the 250 & above EXC's come in with all the road legal bits AFAIK. So no worries if new, if buying 2nd hand the owner should have all the bits in a box somewhere.
