View Full Version : Wairarapa: Wairarapa Sprints - 24/9/06 and 26/11/06
Cliffhanger Promo
29th August 2006, 13:31
Cliffhanger promotions proudly presents the annual Wairarapa Motorcycle Sprints.
These have been held for several years now - the revenue raised is used to fund the annual Cliffhanger Hillclimb held in Gladstone (East of Carterton). Cliffhanger Promotions would also like to purchase our own telemetry apparatus for accurate timings, which isn't cheap.
The event location is different this year and will be held at Dalefield Road, Carterton. The sprints will be run in a West - East direction.
Another change this year is the requirement for all entrants to have a race licence, in accordance with Motorcycling New Zealand Rules. This has mean't an increase in the entry cost, as a 'day race licence' is an additional $15.
Entrants already holding an MNZ race licence will not have to pay the additional $15.
Due to the price increase, Cliffhanger Promotions have been actively seeking sponsors for the event, in order to offer prizes for various categories. The specific prize categories are yet to be determined.
So far the response for sponsorship has been really great, and offers have already been received from Quasimoto Accessories, Diarbi Accessories (via Motormart), TSS Motorcycles, Honda, Pirelli, Forbes and Davies and we are hoping that even more will provide there support. Special thanks to Limbimtimwim and Skelstar for kindly offering to construct a new and improved website - watch this space for a likely 'online' date.
We would particularly like to encourage smaller bikes and younger riders to enter, as this could be a stepping stone to entry into road racing.
The entry form and disclaimer are currently in draft form only, but we hope to have this finalised and posted in here and at local bike shops over the next week or two.
Any questions, feel free to ask. All enquiries regarding minimum protective gear should be directed to Garry Allbrett - 06 379 8081
Up to 20 marshalls are desired, in order to have a few extras for relieving also. We would be grateful for any names and contact numbers of people able to assist with marshalling.
Marshalls would be required to be on site at 8.00am on each day of the sprints.
Please indicate if you are able to assist with marshalling by listing your name and contact phone number here. Would any of your friends or family be able to assist ?
We need your support to make this event happen.
For some reason I cannot post attachments but will get Deano to post the flyer soon.

Sounds good, coupla questions:
1. will i be allowed out without a backprotector and normal leather shoes? (Sharks, not steel capped)
2. anything i need to know about aquiring a day race license?
other than that the only thing i have a problem with is the pricing, it'd be nice to have a >=250cc catogory in order to get us younger (read poorer) riders into it. though i do suppose on the flip side we have slower bikes and therefore take up more time :weird:

Hi Wasp,
the pricing has been $30 in the past, so the under 600cc is actually cheaper, although a one day race licence is now required. Cliffhanger Promotions had no option but to pass on the race licence fee to entrants unfortunately.
There will be prizes however.
A back protector is recommended but not required.
Leather boots 25cm high will be required as per MNZ Rule 8.3.1 but this is currently being clarified with MNZ, as is the possibly use of cordura pants and jackets.
A further update will be posted (edited) on the front page as info comes to hand.

Cheers for that Cliffhanger promo.
Just curious. Is the new location better or worse i.e. longer run up for the flying? Must pop over soon as and find this mystery road.
Wonder if I can shave 36cc off the motor with a file and sneak under the 600 class

That's stupid. Dalefield road is shit compared to the normal location. It's bumpy and has a million driveways.
I'm out. I'm not risking my neck on a road with residential properties.
Don't anybody DARE go speed testing down that road either. There's blind hump backed bridges, blind dips and a school down the end of it. I go down there a lot and it's normally coated in cow poo.
There'll be a large number of lifestylers bitching about the road closure and noise too.
Just stupid.

I'm serious. It will create issues.
The past venue had one side road and NO driveways.
The daily stock movement on Dalefield road would beat the yearly stock movement figures for the East-West access road, and the East-West access road is MUCH better surfaced than Dalefield Road. Dalefield road is also narrower and the hazards are closer to the side of the road. There are usually sections of that road that are a brownish green from the baked on cow shit.
I think it's stupid. Just to make it easier access. All it will do is lift the negative profile of the event because of the type of people likely to be disadvantaged by the road closure.
East-West access road is also closer to Wellington Hospital by Helicopter than Dalefield Rd.

Shorter run up. With dips and hump back bridges.
Unless they are going to let you run past 4 side roads and a school at the finish.

Residents have already been approached and given the thumbs up.
There is at least one driveway at the East West access road. Admittedly, there are more on Dalefield Rd, hence the need for more marshalls.

The road condition is a major concern. It has a far more pronounced camber than the East-West access road, is narrower, gets drenched with bovine by-products more regularly than the stretch that is normally used on the East-West access road, spectating will be much more difficult and a lot less comfortable that the natural stadium created by the diversion embankment and I personally would not like to be pedalling a bike at 240km/hr (or a lot more in some cases) down that bumpy, badly surfaced and repaired road.
Taumata Island road would have been a much better bet if you wanted a course closer to a town. It has less traffic and a better surface and is slightly wider.
I know some of the residents too, and some people that live nearby and use the road. They are some of NZ's worst drivers and wouldn't notice a road closure, not unlike the HD riders that blundered on to the East-West access road a couple of years ago.
You haven't sold an argument that stacks up in my opinion.
I think the venue is flat out dangerous. I hope nothing goes wrong.

This event has been fantastic in the past because it allows amateurs to get out there and do some grass level motorsport in a controlled situation on their own bike without spending a fortune on a race prepped track bike. It's taken me three years to convince my wife that it is safe to take part, but no way in hell will she let me enter if it's held on Dalefield Rd.
So I have a personal stake in holding it somewhere else. I think this event and the Hillclimb are two of the best things in NZ Motorcycle Sport. The Bullshit stops and you get to benchmark yourself and go back next year with a goal, without having to commit the 10s of thousands normally needed for a National series, and given it's closed course nature, it is quite easy for us old blokes to get insurance cover for events on public roads on our street bikes.
Don't get me wrong, I'm utterly positive about the event. I just WISH I didn't have to work the Monday night the meeting was held and I could have raised my issues then. It makes me look like an overly critical negative bastard, but we all know about 20 alternative venues in the Wairarapa for this type of event.

30th August 2006, 17:48
I must say, I was looking forward to the East-West venue. It does seem hard to beat as far as safety is concerned. The viewing bank is also top notch and very safe for spectators.
Some quite concerning words noted from Jim2.
I haven't seen this new venue myself, but the idea of more roadways and possibly more animals roaming loose isn't as inviting.
If the road is bumpier, definately not good.
As Sparky bills said, what is with the venue change?
I'll make an effort to check out the venue in the next few days. Not at highspeed though!

So why has the venue been changed this year anyway??
Because Police were concerned that the E-W road encouraged speeding at the event in past years. I think secretly the Police want us to use a small round-about in future for the flying top speed runs. How about the Martinborough square? much safer.
And Jim2 ... enough mate, you're scaring me.
The starting point for the runs at the E-W Road (in 2004. I was away last yr)was a tad short and meant your first gear change was on the bend. Doesn't sound much but every fraction of a sec. counts. I asked the starting marshal to let us start a bit further back towards the bridge..no luck.
There was only one driveway on your left and they parked a white vehicle in it as a block. But bugger me if every time I approached it the speedo was up to 280+ by then and the thought that maybe someone WAS in it and about to pull out always freaked me out. So a dozen driveways is going to test the nerves, but hey cheers to the organisors for putting so much effort in for us to have fun. What a buzz it was seeing the speedo cap out at its limiter at 299kph just seconds before the first timing light. The satisfaction of knowing you reached the max. recorded for that bike/model by the journos

Thanks for your support there MD.
Certainly spectator viewing was a factor in changing the venue - closer access to shops. The school facilities are also going to be used (toilets and hall), which will be good.
The start will be at about the old dairy factory heading West, but this is not yet set in concrete. The road will be checked prior to any runs occurring and swept of any stones and cowsh*t.
PR has already been carried out with local residents and there will be marshalls at every driveway.
To this end, we need about 12-15 marshalls (obviously less are required for the standing 1/4 as less of the roads will be used.)
We will gratefully accept names of volunteers NOW !! We do need your support. Obviously, if too many competitors find the road is not suitable, the venue could be changed for the November sprints.
However, Tony Sampson (ex road racer ) who won last years sprint with a top speed of 300+ kph has checked the road out and is happy with it.
Certificates will also be given to all entrants, indicating their top speed and standing 1/4 mile time.

Last year we started at the bridge and if I recall rightly, I was clicking between 2nd and 3rd going round the bend - that was pretty scary, coming out of the bend, hanging off the seat trying to keep the throttle full on. Not the best scenario I would have thought, but I got to see 298kph on the speedo at the end of the run.
I also hit a bump the year before and smacked the chin of my helmet into the tank. Must have missed it last year.
I haven't seen the road myself, so might check it out this weekend - I suggest anyone concerned about the state of the road and are thinking about entering do so as well.

If I need to practice starts on the 10, I'll be there (will know after 23rd sep actrix round) I'll only be doing the standing though, I've only let rip twice on the 10 now and it was pulling wheelies in top in dips and what have you that were barely perceptible to the eye, so not really keen on doing flying runs unless it is held on a billiard table smooth road.

Haven't done one myself, but you start a fair way down the road, and most bikes should be tapped out when you cross the line. A quarter of a mile later you go through the second timing gate and you speed is calculated from that.
Ohh...it pays to have all the bikes cylinders firing at the second timing gate if you want a good time/speed (eh Slingshot ;)).

Checked the road out last weekend - it's flat and smooth with no bumps of concern. No cowshit whatsoever.
A lot of power poles, and the road is narrower than East West Access Road - just don't run off the road.
East West Access road still has Macrocarpa trees and the standard wire strainer fence so hit that at 250+ kph and ....well, ask yourself.
Skelstar, Limbimtimwim, Mikey and I went to the meeting on Monday night - The direction is proposed to be West to East, starting at the rise at the west end.
Mikey and Mrs Deano are going to marshall - who else ? Jim2 ?

I met with Cliffhanger Promotions last night to drop off some prizes (about $800 worth - bloody good effort from the sponsors.) Tank pads, bar grips, cleaning and lube products, t-shirts, moive passes, bike shop vouchers, caps, bike locks etc.
Categories at this stage are fastest in standing and flying 1/4 for :
1. up to 250 4 stroke or 200cc 2 stroke
2. 250 2 stroke to 450 4 stroke
3. 450cc to 650cc
4. 651cc to 750cc
5. >750cc
6. BEARS
7. Fastest woman (Helen Clarke and her convoy need not apply)
Also potentially best wheelie, best presented bike, oldest rider and possibly a random draw.
These are all subject to change at the organisers discretion, and will be dependent on number of entries in each category and demand.
There is also a sausage sizzle and raffle of a chest/back protector. Bring some loose change.

There might be more worthy successes than riding your bike while you're younger than 20. I remember a very longtime ago (maybe your first post) where you asked us not to judge you on your age :).
Just sprint and lets hear than awesome sounding bike of yours scream past.

People entering only need to be there by 9.00am. Leaving Caltex at 8.00am would give you ample time - you could even stop for a quick coffee on the way. Or a pie, eh Fatjim ?
It shouldn't take any longer than 40 minutes really. I wouldn't have a clue how many people will enter but I can't imagine they will turn anyone away.

I sure do feel nackered considering I spent most of the day riding in short straight lines. Thoroughly enjoyed my first time and was impressed by the organisation of the day (well done team) and the choice of new location. The road is pretty shitty at the beginning, but the section we sprinted on was excellent. No incidents, except something I heard about a 300km/h tankslapper (those gixxers are shite!). Time for an oil-change & valve clearances before the end of November me thinks. The ride home over the Taka's was memorable too, it felt like a hurricane had hit Featherston after enjoying the calm Carterton weather all day.
By the way, I won fastest 1100 for the flying, I think there was 2 there with the other being a shite gixxer.

Stew from TSS - for picking me up off the floor after he told me the price of new spark plugs :thud: (well worth it though)

Big thank you to Cliffhanger Promotions and all involved in running this great event. I am sure those who Marshalled would rather have been riding so thanks for making the sacrifice guys. I think the new road overall is a better venue on the whole than the "old" one - better parking (ie sealed side roads) and being able to use the nearby facilities in the Hall/School grounds is a bonus.

Cheers for the positive feedback guys. Glad everyone enjoyed themselves. There were a few hiccups, mostly the certificates which were partly written up, but then in the excitement, individuals fastest times and speeds were not filled in, in time to hand out. Something to improve upon for November. I will suggest that the Wgtn and Hutt certificates get sent to me asap and can be collected from my place, or my work. Will let you all know soon.
Thanks to everyone who supported this event by entering, marshalling, sizzling sausages (Mrs Deano etc) and to the guys who helped with sponsorship, and of course the sponsors themselves. It was great to be able to give a prize to nearly everyone who entered.
I'm glad the new venue was acceptable - perhaps not as good as E-W Access in terms of viewing the runs but still good. Standing a few metres from bikes doing big speeds certainly gave me a few goosebumps. The sound was awesome.
Good on the young guys on the 250's (and RS125) for giving it a go. Hayden on the GN cracked everyone up by tooting and showing some leg as he went past.
I think everyone's heart was in their throat when Tony Sampsons Gixxer got a head shake (not Tony riding mind) at near on 300kph. He certainly earned the brown pants prize. I'm sure Tony went white as a ghost for a few seconds.
Stew (from TSS) looked pretty happy when Jay Lawrence took the lead at 301 kph on a stock R1, however Tony fought back hard with a convincing 306kph. The tail wind had picked up a little for the last few runs and may have been an important factor.
In the standing 1/4, Jay did 9.98s on Flame's ZX9 (first time he rode the bike too). Tony Sampson again pipped him with a 9.88s on the Gixxer, then fried his clutch in his second run.
Looking forward to November.

Most impressive to watch/hear. That headshake caused more 'clench' moments in the crowd too - phwoar, shudder!!! The old gixxer was a bit of a sight with more oil on the outside than in from the look of it.

Great day. A very well run event thanks to Deano's efforts and the rest of the cliffhanger team.
I spent a great deal of the day sitting on the finish line seeing bikes go past at term velocity a mere 3m away. Theres nothing like hearing the rumbling sound of the air passing over Drew's mid-nineties gixxer 750 from a mile off. The 'noisy-est' bike body/shape by a long shot.
The wheelie session was bloody good fun to watch too.

Well I saw a fair few cameras clicking away so where are the photos?
That mcnz crowd stuck cute little stickers all over our bikes when we weren't looking.
Not much on their site about the sprints. The pic. of some of the bikes lined up looks good. For those not there, there were about 45 bikes in all. More than what those pics let on.
And what's with the only wheelie photo being one of Tony's wobbly wibbly gixer. Man that bike had a serious case of a pissed out of their tree drunk trying to walk the straight line.
The wheelie session almost turned to custard. Talk about chaos in charge. All we heard was 'go out there somewhere and do your stuff ' Exactly where and in which direction and how do we know if the crowd are AWARE OF WHAT HAPPENING and being kept back was a mute point.
I went south following 2 others . We turn. I pop up the wheel and heading back towards the crowd as Fizzerman (I think, or Jay Lawrence) pulls out of the pits and wheelies towards me. Now this was getting interesting I think to myself. So he wants to play chicken! Alright mate game on. I'm in for a piece of that. Then I think (hope) we both realised how narrow that road was and what our combined collison speed was building too. Closing fast now. Shit-a brick, we're both still going for it. OK I can move a bit more left so long as he does the same. Bloody hell we were cutting it fine and discretion got the better of us both.
So we all pull up for a conference. This was the funny bit. About 5 of us. Anyone know which bit of road they want us to use?- lots of negative head shakes. Which direction ?- more head shakes. Do the crowd know and has anyone spotted a marshall?- more shakes. Hey says someone- I don't even think the roads closed. A good point a minute later as Jay pops it up a car facing him in the distance pulls out and moves towards him. %$#@ another abort. Another conference at the Hilton. This aint safe - lots of positive nods. Atleast we had an agreement.
Did those spectating realise how much we were shitting ourselves as we passed the crowd standing on both sides of the intersection, no barriers holding anyone and the kiddies back. Then just as you reach the point of no return people poke their heads out behind the person in front to get a better view, just like those people on the other side are doing. It was like watching a doorway slowly closing as you try and race through it.
Caught up in the moment with the others and the crowd watching I carried on but later on I had some serious guilt attacks that I crossed the line of public safety. We could all be discussing the worse case outcome today. Couple of us had a chat to Daryl afterwards and he was equally upset how it started, but once he swung the marshalls into position he was OK with it all.
As Tony wobbled towards us at 200kph+ on the back wheel we were thinking of bailing into the bushes. Bugger me his bike had a bad case of speed wobbles. Tony said it was a bitch to wheelie. If it looked bad during the wheelie he said it was worse after the landing.

25th September 2006, 21:31
We are all born leaders. The problem is that no one has been born to follow!
Don't get me wrong I'm not having a moan. It's just that the riders couldn't tell what the story was at the roadside. May have seemed perfectly fine to those at the roadside. Another funny bit was when we were all gathered 300m south and Daryl stands out in the distance waving his arms frantically up and down at us. We all reply with our arms stretched out in puzzlement? One of us says.. is he waving us to go for it? Or is that the don't go for it wave? Lets go for it and find out ..

My main input was contacting potential sponsors for the prizes, and I can't take all the credit for that either as I delegated some of it to others...Sparky Bills, Jimbo600, Darkman - these guys deserve some credit also.
The power of the internet was also very handy in getting the message out there, and probably accounted for the high number of entries.
I was arranging the prizes on the table in the hall when the wheelie session started so wasn't aware of the confusion, but I've noted the concern and will raise the matter at the 'debrief' meeting on 9th October.
Any other suggestions or improvements can be PM'ed to me for discussion at this meeting also.

In terms of safety I thought it was like going back in time!
When I turned up I was worried about the crowd control, or lack thereof, at the start of the timing. There was kids around shorter than the "safety rope", which I suggeted they put up. Would one of the farmers object to using one of the paddoks for the spectators?
Some haybales (sp) in front of the posts may just save a life too. Now before anybody starts saying "you hit a haybale at 300k and you're dead anyway" what if you came off, slid down the road for 50m and then hit a post/pole. You'd be right pissed off if there wasn't something to soften the blow.

Some fencing would be a good idea, although parents need to take some responsibility for their kids as well.
I don't think any of the farmers wanted their paddocks used, but will check it out.
That's a hell of a lot of hay bales and may not be practicable. There are wire fences on either side as well.
BTW - just for comparison - crowds watching WRC in Europe ?

Trouble with this is that if a kid ran out and hit a WRC car the wee-un would bounce off...bummer for the kid. Kid hits a bike at 300km/h, no fun for anyone.
I think either more vigourous taping or some sort of fence.

I agree. Espesially for the wheelie sessions. At one stage Jay put his bike down pretty close to one of the guys in the crowd.

I believe the attraction of this event is that it should remain affordable, easy to enter and most of all fun for everyone. Those who enter must accept the risks and take responsibility for their own safety. If the organisers are forced into having to put up protection/hay bales etc and need to implement too many safety measures I suspect it will inevitably end up becoming overpriced and over regulated, and I would not blame the organisers if they flag the whole thing away. By all means there needs to be a focus on Spectator safety and ensuring that control of the road is done properly. My suggestion on how to help achieve this would be to use some of that orange "contractors" netting to close off the Pit side road, and maybe the other side - make it a "Taranaki gate" arrangement so that the Marshals could open/roll it back to allow competitors out ONLY when it is safe to do so, and in an orderly fashion. This also creates a clearer demarcation point for the Spectators and means Competitors would have to form up on a sort of dummy grid before the gate, which is safer than having individual bikes threading their way out through the crowd in dribs and drabs.

Ok I didnt end up coming till after the wheelies but my opinion was the meeting was run well ok there were people around but when the flying mile was run tape came up and people didnt step out on the road and the effort the others put into this as well needs to be appreciated they may not be kiwibiker members but they have been organising this for years now and is always a favourite and I cant wait to the next ones to enter them

I think I've got a vid of Hamish on the flying quarter. Pitty I missed filming his Standing wheelies on the GN250 , the last one was brill !, most entertaining rider of the day.
Will edit on weekend, I think I've also got a couple of other bikes low flying. It was a bit harder to film at the new venu, probably only a couple of frames of bike in the video .

Haven't seen or heard a single time of mine.
Surely they will post the results, Isn't that what we paid for?
Wasn't that what they were offering?
All in all though, a good event. I agree about the crowd being too close -Scary should something go wrong.
I still like the east by west venue but hey, had it been there this time, the wind would have ruined it. So turned out to be the better venue after all.
What a wicked ride home, It was like riding into a Hurricane when approaching featherston. Cool!

Here is a full frontal of my Italian girlfriend - taken in Garage (at home after the Sprints).
Note I had to tape up the number because the sticky was not too good - a few riders lost theirs along the way, probably just those like myself who actually apply polish to their bikes - not compatible with the adhesive on the sticky labels. Must remember to take some tape next time, I had to scrounge some Duct tape off those very obliging and very talented young racer types.

Thanks Deano for getting them to your place and also for a fanTAZtic ride today.
Well I got what I wanted.
Flying 1/4 5.56 sec. at an average speed of 260.51 kph (162.82 mph) :D Fastest 600 even beating the man MD by 00.47 of a Kph :D Oh I am soooooo happy
Please don't get me wrong I have the utmost respect for MD. he is a better rider than me and it's not worth me even talking about wheelies as I can barely get the front end up for more than a couple of secs!!!! but he has a new 636 and I'm on a K1 Gixer 600 (yes with a couple of mods but hey) :D and I wanted to get him at something.
He got me in the standing. I got 10.99 and his was better. I'm not going to say what as I'm not sure he knows yet till he gets his certificate.
Looking forward to the November one.
Hope you all had a great weekend and managed to get some K's in on your machines

Everyone knows red is the fastest colour, Pink decals help too when you're pushing 250kg of bike to 253.31km/hr. I'm undecided wether to enter again, although I could run with 20 odd litres less fuel, 5psi extra in the tyres and an extra cup of coffee for breakfast. Throw in $50 for a front sprocket and I could get to 275?? We'll see.

Last night's meeting with the organisers went pretty well - a good amount of money raised and suggestions for improvement were considered.
Discussion about which venue was 'better' arose, and Dalefield Road was accepted as much better spectator wise - the viewing is not as good as E-W Access Rd, but a lot more spectators were at Dalefield Road, possibly due to proximity to Carterton. Facilities at Dalefield also better.
November sprints will be at Dalefield Road as it's already booked, but I suggested asking the entrants for feedack afterwards. They are also going to look at other possible and suitable roads, so if you have any ideas yourself, please speak up.
Bear in mind the length, trueness, smoothness of the road and proximity to town and any facilities.
