Over 300 caught in speeding blitz

Friday September 1, 2006
By Juliet Rowan

Three Bay of Plenty drivers have been caught doing more than 150km/h in a weeklong speeding blitz, including a motorcyclist clocked at more than 180km/h on the winding State Highway 29 across the Kaimai Ranges.

Police say they are appalled at the results of the blitz, in which more than 300 motorists were issued with tickets for speeding in front of schools.

Of the worst three speedsters, another motorcyclist was caught doing 171km/h on State Highway 2 at Te Puke and then, later the same evening, doing 160km/h in a 50km/h zone in Tauranga.

The third was driving a car at 151km/h in an area of State Highway 33 between Te Puke and Rotorua known as Three Mile Hill, which has a history of fatal accidents.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, head of the Western Bay of Plenty strategic traffic unit, said the speeds reached by the trio were among the highest and most dangerous he had seen.

"It's blatant stupidity by people who have no regard for the safety of other road users or themselves," he said.

He said driving at more than 150km/h was a recipe for disaster on any road.

The driver doing 151km/h was stopped by a highway patrol officer and suspended from driving for 28 days, and is now due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on driving charges.

The motorcyclist who drove at more than 160km/h twice in one evening was found by police at his home. He is facing charges including reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of three months in prison.

Whoops - a timely reminder to be extra vigilant on the run up to Coro tonight. I'd forgotten that there was a blitz in the Central North Island. Cheers:Punk:

Definately not me although I've been trying to get a speeding ticked just to prove how fast it can go!

Saw a motorcycle copper on the southern today - he was parked when I saw him first then there he was in my left wing mirror "I'm getting pulled over" thought I but off he went through the traffic and I passed him a couple of minutes later discussing things with a cage driver - gave him a friendly nod as I passed.

Lucky me as I'd only just slowed down before the bend....

Funny how few 'Disasters' the Germans have on their Autobahns innit?

and the police keep telling us - one law for all...
(s'why cage learners can do 100 and bike learners can only do 70)
(s'why child killers have the right to remain silent and speeders in Invercargill get their bike destroyed for keeping schtum)
1 law for all......Muwahahahahaha!

Hmm... If it's who I think it is (sounds like his riding) It'd be an old work mate of mine. Rides a black Z1000 and is a complete fuckwit with no respect for his bike. Surprised he hasn't killed himself yet.
And his even more retarded mate who last I heard was on a Ninja 750 even after he went speeding down a road and forgot about a turn just before a brick wall that he luckily missed.

wow... Pretty dumb but wrong place at the wrong time.

If you double the speed limit in the states it's considered "attempted suicide"

Fail to see how this applies .... their autobahns are built for 300 km h, not the barely 80 kmh the roads in NZ are built for.

When they have a disaster ... it is farken big!

The cop said, "speeds are a recipe for disaster on ANY road".
Patently, they are not.

Wot he said...I was having a go at the use of the word ANY.

Is that all they were doing??!! (Tongue in cheek) Having just binned my bike I really should shut up. Needless to say I have learnt my lesson - so far in theory - don't have a bike to test that yet!! I'm trying to borrow my newphew's bike lol!! 250CC - well any bike is better than none (I lie - I won't ride a scooter - can't handle those things).
