Well done Richard. Enjoy your new ride!

Nice choice of machine there sir, that blue stands out. That's the good 108hp motor too. They emasculated the GSX750 motor in '98, and it lost 20hp.

Was that the one from PN?

No, I couldn't visit that one in the end. This one was in Levin - still involved a trip back over Paekak in the dark for my first (other than test) ride on it :)

Congrats RWH, You'll be loving the extra horses on that machine.........

Congrats on the full licence too - No restrictions for breaking the law anymore.

Here's hoping the weather picks up.

Is the ride on this week? Weather looks good for the week and there may not be too many good days left.

I had a good ride on Sunday but by hump day I need another one. So who is up for it?

It was, though chilly.

Just the three of us (with quallman1234 and hsvboy06 - Wasp piked after turning up again), 1 1/2 laps of the inlet and Mana Macs for a bite.

Then, having observed that I'm not really that keen on the twisties in the dark, I went home to Karori via Makara ...

That'll do me - thanks guys.

It's been such a long time since I have done a Wednesday night ride so I thought "Why not give everyone a reminder?"

Today is the last day of waiting, the last 3 months have flown by. The last couple of Wednesday Night rides I attended it was "55 days to go" etc etc.

So tomorrow is the event of the year, well for me at least. Yes that's right....................it's SLAYER .:Punk:

I will update you all on the next Wednesday night ride, haha. If I can still hear!

http://slayer.net - Just in case anyone is interested. Yeah Right!

Rock on everyone.

Is a good idea slayer although it looks like, as in previous years, that the cold & dark weave their evil magic to discourage people and so it finally dies.

We seem to have found a very agreeable alternative however in the Sunday rides. The last three weekends have seen around 30 people involved. Sure the weather's been great which helps. This Sunday's forecast is for Fine, Dry, Light winds ... so we're all on again.

Come join us, the event is here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1243&day=2007-4-22.

See you there?

I'm keen to join this Wednesday. I FINALLY got my bike running again (after 4-5 months :( ) so I'm keen.

I've never been on a Wednesday night ride (well, I've never been on a group ride before :D), so can anybody please summarize for me what I need to know? (is there a set meeting point/course? And other stuff that is considered common knowledge for this run)

Thanks

The ANZAC ride is indeed a cool idea and I have another

I don't want to blaspheme this thread but given the consistently good turnouts on the Sunday rides it appears that a pattern is emerging, maybe to our advantage.

It's getting cold and dark on Wednesday nights now and everyone tells me that the TCWNR does an undignified sort of fizzle about this time of the year and reappears with new vigor along with daylight saving starting.

On the other hand, the Sunday rides seem to have become their substitute but without a regular forum home. Soooo ... would it upset the Order Of Things to start a new thread "TCSMR - Wellington 2007" ? (That's 'The Cruisy Sunday Morning Ride' (TCSMR) for those who are past their bedtime)

Also a good idea. This may make knowing numbers a little more difficult if you are planning to contact places for lunch, unless the calendar is used each week. But you will get a more regular group that follows the thread and attends the ride, which I think is a good thing.

Yep, good idea. (I think I've actually suggested it a couple of times already!)

There was also a suggestion (by Salo, I think) to alternate Saturday and Sunday, for those that can never make one or the other due to other commitments. What ya reckon to that?

If TCSMR was in the same vain as TCWNR then it would be a case of seeing who turns up on the day, making a joint decision on where to go, and then taking your chances for food when you get there. (Sunday lunch is definitely more of a chance than Wednesday dinner, though.)
And, BTW, we should meet at the duck pond!

All sounds great. My 2c is that an earlier start would be the go, to get ahead of the traffic. The last couple of weeks have been a bit too "middle of the day" IMO.

8:30 start on Sunday is much better. The hill is clear and the back roads are clear, post 9:15am coffee in Martinborough.

I wondered about that Hitch as it's coming up to the time when we close TCSMR for the summer. I wondered if we should just re-name them so that they remain as an active archive. They make good reading and become very informative for newbies to the site. Fer example ...

Wellington - TCWNR: Wednesday Evenings
Wellington - TCSMR: Sunday Mornings

I was thinking of suggesting "(Daylight Saving)" and "(Dark Months)" in the titles but in practice, it looks as if we often cross those arbitary start/finishes.

It's certain that people will go for long rides on Sundays and shorter ones on Wednesdays so having long-running threads for each maintains their rich history and character.

I presume when the Wednesday rides start the Sunday rides can still continue as I'm only a weekend biker you know?

I think they did last year Merv. There wasn't a thread as such but it seemed that just about on any Sunday we were at Rimutex.

That's sort of why I was suggesting we ask for the current Sunday thread to be generically renamed so that we have a thread where everyone could go for their Sunday-Fix - which tend to be longer touring type rides than we can do on a Wednesday.

Being a Sunday morning, for various reasons, perhaps 10am is too early.

I was quite surprised at the Poll's 10am result as I like my Sunday lie-in and I was expecting that everyone else did too. I was hoping for 11 so maybe 10.30 will be the compromise.

yep - so nice at the taka summit at 0700hrs, and like all have said, no traffic on the way up. Guess we had better vote this time around for an earlier start time folks.
Sunday lie-ins are for when its pissing down with rain and no scheduled rides.
Hopefully have a bigger bike by then too.

Sounds like we'll end up with two groups then, the early and late, because I'm one of the late types by Sunday sick of getting up early for work all week. My e-riders mates do the early thing in summer so I don't ride with them much, hence happily joining the late KB crew. You could chase me back to Ulysses and their 10am starts I suppose.

So nothing wrong with an 8am group and a 10.30 group there's enough of us.

16th August 2007, 08:27
Its a seasonal thing surely - in the winter with less daylight and lower temps it makes sense to start later. In the main summer season an early start means more riding time.

And I suppose it depends on whether you want to go for a midday cruise or spend the day getting some K's on the clock

I can see both sides of this one. Although , as I get up at 4.45am 5 days a week, I would like to sleep in on a sunday, and take in a casual ride around 10.30am, stop off for lunch etc. etc.

Anyway thats my dimes worth,so lets see how many we get on either view..

Pizza:
Belvedere Brie - Chicken, Berry Sauce, Caramelized Onions and Brie Cheese.
Seafood Marinara - Mussels, squid, clams, shrimps and spinach
Satay Special - Chicken, Cashews, Satay, Poached Peaches, with Sourcream and sweet chilli sauce.
Hotty - Chilli, Red Peppers Jalapeno, Marinated Olives, Chorizo and Artichokes.

Of course theres the usual Hawaiian, Meat Lovers and Pumpkin pizzas as well.

Pasta: Spinach Fettuccine, Blue Vein Cheese, Vongole, Beef Lasagne

And Rosti, garlic bread and wedges. Loads more stuff as well.

sorry i hate putting a dampener on things, dont get me wrong though - I'm all for eating pizza

tcwnr was started as an alternative to trtnr - its point was to be 100% newbie orientated (but ppl can obviously go off and do their own thing if bored) and an alternative for those who didnt like their average speed being so high

Okay thats cool and all but whats that got to do with pizza you ask?

well, i'm not sure if other people remember their days as a newbie but i sure remember mine(probably cos they're not over yet  - the trtnr crew looked after me, i have no doubt about that - you guys and girls rock!) - i remember many times when after a tcwnr i got home between 9:30 and 10 - infact it was most nights and i lived in the Hutt! i never once stopped and wondered why some people left early and never clicked that it was the people who lived in the cbd

The problem is you see is that carterton is just that little bit further (according to wises - 20.7kms and 20 minutes from featherston) make that a round trip and thats 40 minutes later i would get home - letting the newbies get home at 10:40 is not an option sorry (plus don't forget that the Learners have to do 70km/h)

SO! i suggest a couple of alternatives

1) do it on a thursday night - meet with trtnr but go in your own groups (i doubt i will come for pizza with this idea due to prior commitments...cough...trtnr...cough...)

2) do it on a weekend - plenty of free time on a weekend -get an early start, take the back roads there, take some different back roads back - theres is going to be plenty of beautiful blue skies hot sun and plenty of time this summer

3) fuck tcwnr - no one is making you stay and help newbies, you're allowed to do what you want (yes we'll even let you ride with us afterwards...)

geez, i havnt ranted like that in ages but please oh please

won't someone think of the newbies?

p.s. i'm glad to see you all advancing but those of us a season ahead (or more!) had to go through the same thing last year, you are advancing but there will always be someone there with a new bike, an L plate, a dumb look on their face and bad lines to take your place! remember we were there to watch and help you - please remember our contributions and patience and try and do the same for some one new this season  :)

Hmmm it's a balancing thing isn't it. Skels, a LOT of newbies express fear and trepidation about coming out on group rides because they fear holding everyone up or being left behind. So I'm all for mentoring and sheparding.

Wasps point was about getting home after 10 I think ... and that's well made. However I don't agree that Carterton is not a good idea for the first TCWNR of the year. It's a bit of an event, an occasion, a celebration. In fact we should sacrifice virgins at the top of the takas as the sun goes down.

Normally we don't go that far and from my reading of the posts on the pizza matter so far, it doesn't seem that anyone is suggesting it as a regular thing.

Not everyone is as confident in a new, group situation as you seem to think.

I rode in Wellington for a couple of years without going over 'the hill'. Yes it's just a hill, just a road..... but some people need support to make the next step in their riding.

I am sorry Skelster .. but that attitude sucks .. I think that either you have been riding a while or started riding when your balls told you your were invincible ... it is not about molly-coddling people ... its about building their confidence ... and this is done over time .... does everyone need to be comfortable going over the Rimis ... no ... is everyone ... no ... do people need to realise the world is bigger than them .. and that building confidence is a good thing ... maybe.

The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride.

Yes folks it's on again this Wednesday - Weather permitting.
Departing 6:30 at the southern end of Avalon park by the duck/elephant pond.
(Turn off the Hutt motorway and onto the Kennedy Good bridge, the carpark is 100metres past the end of the bridge, on your left hand side)

First ride for the season: Wednesday 13th September, 2006.

Please Note: This ride is arranged in order to provide a local social riding event for the local KB riders that are riding the smaller CC bikes and that generally prefer slower paced rides.
This event works well by having the group remain as a group when in transit and by travelling at predominantly road legal speeds.
All KB riders and friends are welcome to attend this ride. However, should you struggle to maintain the groups easy going pace, we ask that you be considerate and stick with it for this is a learner/introductory riders group event.

These rides generally consist of a group ride with a purpose - A pitstop at a pub! Pub destinations previously ranged from Featherston, Wellington city, Karori, Trentham, Paremata and Paekakariki.

All first timers are welcome. So feel free to tag along for an enjoyable social event.

Destination will be determined by the group on the day.
If the weather looks dodgey on any given Wednesday, tune in to the site for the group decision of do or die. See you there!

I am sorry Skelster .. but that attitude sucks .. I think that either you have been riding a while or started riding when your balls told you your were invincible ... it is not about molly-coddling people ... its about building their confidence ... and this is done over time .... does everyone need to be comfortable going over the Rimis ... no ... is everyone ... no ... do people need to realise the world is bigger than them .. and that building confidence is a good thing ... maybe.
If you knew me well enough, or at all, you would know that I'm not cocky, am quite careful about my riding. I went over the hill about two weeks after starting to ride (2 years ago actually). Didn't think I was invincible and it wasn't a big deal cause a big deal wasn't made of it.

Yeah anyway...

TCWNR destination is usually determined at the duck pond by those present on the night. However, I would think it acceptable to have a pre-planned destination, such as Carterton for Pizza, for 3rd Oct, as a kind of celebration that a new season is underway. If anyone considers that to be too far or difficult for them, then perhaps they give it a miss that week, and we look forward to their company the following week when "business as usual" - with hand holding for any that want it - should resume.

If TCWNR is headed to Carterton on 3rd Oct then it should be made clear on the new thread, so nobody turns up without that knowledge.

As usual, everyone is free to ride where they like, and even two TCWNR destinations is not out of the question - perhaps Carterton for some, and a local ride for those that don't want such a late night.

Spare a thought for those of us that have to ride back to Kapiti!

Ok the pizza place was just a suggestion, and I didnt think that we would make it a regular thing. But as it is a newbies ride, and I do consider myself a bit of a newbie... going all the way from Welly to Carterton could be alittle bit too much. Not sure what to do about it. Maybe like hsvboy06 said:

I do think that as a newbie the 'takas' can seem abit scary at the best of times, so I would hate to think anyone was coming over who didnt feel confident in going all the way to Carterton and was only do it cause the rest of 'us' were. Not that we are holding the newbies hand Skel but we do have to think about the people who arent so experienced or confident. I have been riding for quite a while now as you know, but I still have my moments, everyone learns at their own pace eh... :calm:

Perhaps we should table a plan to "go all the way" (to Carterton) in the middle of the summer when (a) there's more light and (b) newbies can be safely pre-informed and if necessary bought up to speed.

What say, ye?

1 vote for skels from me. I rode with skels when he first started. I know I speak for myself and one other who is no longer here, that we liked riding with skels because he rode how he wanted too and to what he felt he was comfortable with. We didn't mind waiting at intersections because he always turned up (not that we were waiting that long).
Didnt hold his hand, all of us have advice but he progressed at his own pace.

I'm easy (not that easy!) The pizza shop will be there for a while, so whatever everyone decides is fine. I will be at the first ride anyway even if we just go to feathers like we use to. (but not if its raining!) :D Although Carterton is only another 20mins down the road.

If the main issues with Carterton are going over the hill and being back by 10pm will it really make any difference to have it in the middle of summer. The hill will be the same, we'll still get back at the same time and itll still be dark by 10pm.
