View Full Version : Sorted!

I'm not going to live this down anytime soon.
Pixie and I removed the carbs and, hello! the slides only open half way.
Pulled the tops off and all 4 diaphragm springs are coil bound.
The tops haven't been off since we did the rejet way back when.
I reckon it was his cock up, he says I put the tops on. So we'll just have to agree................................that he did it.
It's like a new bike, not only has it got all the neddies it's supposed to have, but it's really smooth too.

So can you explain exactly how this occurred? i.e. what made the springs coil bound and all four to boot?

I'm trying to help others avoid the same mistake here - so how did you manage to get the springs coil bound - do they catch somewhere or you stick them in upside down or what? i.e. it obviously wasn't foolproof so what does one need to do to avoid this happening?

There's going to be full and frank discussion on their contribution.

Originally we dropped the carb tops onto the slides while they were in the closed position. This allows enough room for the springs to kink sideways inside the chamber. This time we lifted the slides open, then eased the top onto the slide. This kept the spring located correctly. You still need to be careful while doing it.
AND ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE SLIDES ARE OPENING FULLY WHEN THEY'RE ASSEMBLED.

Blame me you bastard?
I left it to you to do the work as I remember it,and stood by to make sure you didn't make any obvious cock ups.
It's not something I enjoy doing,as I have to watch you tighten the crap out of all those small screws with the wrong screw drivers.
Bloody butcher mechanics!

All I know is that when I did my carbs,I was careful fitting the vacuum chamber covers to ensure the springs located correctly and I had the sense to check that the slides moved before I refitted them.

As I am an excellent technician,if I had done your carbs there would not have been any problems.:motu:

There's got to be a reason a tradesman mechanic comes to me to have his bikes valve clearances adjusted

It does
I didn't mention shims at all
I think Lou is too blind and clumsy to trust himself to adjust them.

Yeah winja you were close. That would be the shotgun method of diagnosis then? Mention every possible cause, then crow when one was right.:done:

I assumed maybe it was shims since there was an implication of it being a big job. Why d'you have to remove the carbs to adjust tappets, normally it's just remove covers, feeler guage, and tighten or loosen, replace cover.
