Hi guys/gals, wasnt sure if I should introduce myself as of yet, as I don't actually own any bikes (except a four wheeler - woot):shit:. I would love to own my own road bike, something I have thought about for years, but only now just getting around to doing. I used to go riding (on the back) with friends, but now I am going to have to get one for myself. I  bikes what more can I say.

Texmo started on a scoot but now he's a real man with a Gixxer.
My personal opinion is that a decent 150 would be a good bike to start.
The places to do the basic handling test usually supply you with a bike to do the test on, but I'm pretty sure that they also offer a first time lesson and test all in one, would cost you more but it'll allow you to get the very limited basics as well as the basic handling certificate which is what you need to get before you can take your theory learners.
Welcome to the site, hopefully you'll be able to find whatever info you're after.

Thanks for that SuperDave... I don't think that my area has a driving school, would be great if they did, I'll have a look around, maybe talk to a few people.

Welcome aboard the site.
There is a guy in Wgtn that is really good at the whole instruction/licence thing - I would recommend giving him a ring for info.

Thats awesome guys!!! Thanks for your help. I went past Dave Andersons yesterday, but was too *shy* to go in. Its nice to get some support, most people I have told that I want to learn to ride, have either gone silent on me, laughed, told me its too dangerous, or just to stick to riding on the back with someone. Anyway I will go in and talk to them... thanks you rock! and squeeky clean

Belated Greetings - plenty of info and shite on the threads in here! Glad to hear you making the transition onto two wheels of freedom, I did a lot of lurking in here reading up plenty of stuff.
Get into a basic handling course, grab some books about the art of motorcycling riding (reading is a must!), study up the old Road Code for Motorcyclists and when you're ready with BHS cert in hand - book yourself in for the test!
And don't forget, the only stupid question is the question you don't ask! Happy travels in the wonderful world of two wheels

Not sure if this is the right thread to talk about it, but any way in case anyone’s interested. I have contact details for motorcycle training in my area, and will give him a ring tonight... Yippeee. Its not cheap but worth it if I want to learn the right way. Although I might want to go for the one-on-one instructing so I don't make an ass of myself in front of others.:shit: Also been offered a bike to buy (brand new apparently) so will be looking at that soon. So the next thing is to get some information and books to read I guess. Weeeeeeeeee

18th September 2006, 11:28
Have you searched the forums about the pros and cons of bikes yet?
what sort of Brand New bike are you being shown?
What do you intend to use it for?
How long do you plan to keep it?
I've spoken to a few people who have regretted their choice of first bike and have ended up out of pocket as a result - this is a good place to ask questions.
For example - I regret buying a VTR at $6200 - should have bought a Spada at $4000 - then I wouldn't have felt so bad about the bike sliding down the road 3 weeks after I bought it!

cant go wrong with a GN (http://www.suzuki.co.nz/motorcycles/bike.gallery/gn250.m.jpg) Lissa.. if you ass off it ( which isnt a matter of IF so much as WHEN..) its really no big financial hit.. sturdy little machines .. good value for $$
pop it on TardMe in a year and move up to a nice 400 or 650
EDIT: definatly go get your license ASAP..
Lissa
18th September 2006, 11:44
When I am ready to buy a bike I will most differently be on the forums asking questions... don't worry about that ;)
As for going for my licence... I will (I want it done by my next birthday, a little goal of mine) First though, (which is highly important) I have to learn to ride the damn thing :)

How long do you reckon it would be, before you will buy the bike??????
Now that is the question...!
Do you also have your Learners license yet?
You could start getting some gear now...
I would say leave the helmet to nearer the time, as they do have a use by date....
Buy gloves and boots now... to get them all worn in.
Gloves: summer and winter ones.
Do you feel you may loose or put on weight before you buy the bike?
Cos that can make a difference about buying the right sized bike jacket and bike pants.

18th September 2006, 16:37
My 2c, if you own 2 wheelers, (farm bikes?) then you probably know how to ride, and though the road is different to offroad, the skills do cross over easily.
Get the license (sooner is better, even if you aren't going to get a bike for a while, cuts down the time between upgrade steps) Buy the gear, this will motivate you to get the bike, which will motivate you to ride!! Which is good!!

I am in the process of looking for a 250 at the moment, and have started reading the roadcode :scooter: . I had no idea the process for getting your full license was so long and involving (although being over 25 has its benefits there). I will most defiantly get the gear soon... well the gloves, boots and prob a helmet to start with. Can't wait to learn!!

So have you booked that BSHT yet Lis?
ummm not yet skel. Don't think it would be a good look to sit it until I know how to ride. I have two options.... get rider training for $70 per hour, including bike hiring then sit it. Or get a bike first (which I am trying really hard to find one, looking in the paper, internet, and might go over to the hutt and visit some bike shops) and learn at my own speed and then sit it. I am giving myself until Jan to get my learners (my birthday).
Some of the comets I have seen advised by dealers are going for about 7-9k, not sure I want to spend that much on my first bike.

When I took a young fella for his BSHT (bullshit!) The guy said he would pass anyone that showed they could ride a push bike, and grasp how the controls work.
I stalled 16 times during mine, so they ain't too worried, just want to know you can control the bike when it is going, and stop it when you have to.
Don't go crazy on preparation, they realise most people have never ridden on the road before.
