I am looking at an olde goldwing, that I am intrested in purchasing, the compression test comes out

cylinder 1: 146
cylinder 2: 161
cylinder 3: 163
cylinder 4: 155

But there does not appear to be any smoke from the engine and the bike runs OK. 1980 model done about 75000 miles

the problem is I am not sure whether this is an acceptable amount of variance or if it suggests a burnt valve on the number 1 cylinder

If there are some more knowledgable members that could comment I would appreciate it

Thanks

Roj

Hot,cold? Do another couple to confirm the results.10% variation is considered ok,so it's in the ball park.Do a comparative cranking compression test using an oscilloscope as well, taking a voltage or amp reading.

Thanks, I believe the bike was warm, unfortunately I am not able to do this myself as the bike is in the south island and I am in the north, I had a pre purchase check done but wanted an idea of what is an acceptable range for the compression test, I suspect that it has only been done quickly but can't get alot more details about it just yet, bt you seem to have a better idea on this sort of stuff than I do

how in or out of tune is the bike--a couple of badly set valves could throw the compression out

Don't know but that is the sort of answer I am looking for, I am not well enough versed in this sort of thing to know what will make a difference and what sort of questions to ask further regarding the differences

You need to factor in a 'worst case' secnario and decide if it's worth it.

There are a few older wings coming up for sale so you can be choosey. I'd quite like an early one meself, minus all the munt of course....
