View Full Version : New To The Scene (Cache Wraith)

Hi all. Thought I would introduce myself as a new visitor to the site. Already got some very useful tips. I could be accused of having a mid-life crisis by getting into the scene (before I hit the 50's) but I've wanted to ride for many years, family and other commitments have held me back. Had my learners for over three years now but haven't been riding so pretty much a newbie. Just deciding which bike to get into first and then I'll be out there dealing with the nerves. Was formerly in the Police for 17 years and been to plenty of motor accidents, some nasty bike ones, so have to conquer those demons. Looking forward to the experience and hope to quickly get some skills. If it takes me as long though as its taking me to learn the guitar, I'm in trouble. Catch you for a ride some day maybe.
p.s. Been in quite a few vehicle pursuits over the years, caught most of them, but never caught the bikes! :crybaby:

I just have to laugh at the last comment. We all know bikes are superior to cars though.
Welcome to the site, don't feed us before dark, and make sure the light's off when you do - It looks nasty.

Once you get a bike make sure you come and join us on the 250 learner friendly run - plenty of stuff to learn and no pressure to hammer the pace.
Not all of us learners are teenagers!

Welcome to this loony-bin that's sort-of run by the inmates, you'll enjoy it if you don't feed the trolls or take things too seriously!
Get into your riding and just ride with the thought that most other road users are dunderheads and likely to do the wrong thing at the wrong time and you'll be right.
(Oh, that's right, as an ex-cop you already KNOW the above is true!!).

Good on you for taking the decision to ride two wheels of freedom! Plenty of good threads here on the art of riding with the usual dollop of humour. Hope to see you riding out there soon!

Welcome to KB Cache Wraith.
I'm sure you will have some interesting stories and experiences to tell us about at some stage! Thanks, here's an interesting story. Just got home this morning and discovered that my house had been burgled. I obviously disturbed the burglar as I found my electronic goodies strewn on the bedroom floor, including a PSP, binoculars etc. He took a digital camcorder and probably some other items I havn't quite discovered missing yet. As you can summise he didn't take my cherished mac computer as I am still posting. To bring this back on topic, he didn't take my bike, CAUSE I AIN'T GOT ONE YET

Phoned 111 (as the burglar was only leaving the scene) call answered in about 4 seconds. Senior Sergeant arrives on scene not long after. Area patrols carried out by other units, including I'm told the area controller (an inspector) who was in the area. Follow up by a constable who takes all details. Neighbours canvassed. SOCO (Scene of crime officers) on the way to take fingerprints. All in all, an impressive response, if I say so myself.

Too right, that is an impressive callout!
There are a lot of stories from the public to the contrary, but if all burglaries are handled in such a swift manner then public perceptions will improve dramatically.

We might even see the death of the "Cop bashing thread" as we know it.

welcome to KB.
I would surmise that when you rung 111 that you also mentioned that you are a ex-cop.... hence all the manpower to your residence....within minutes.
Cos If we got burgled etc the cops say they will be there in 3 days time... just like a MP I know, he was told the police would be there in 3 days after he got burgled.
Mind you, I mustn't complain about the police, it did take then over 5 weeks to come and take a statement from me re my accident... and 8 months to send me a final report on the said accident...
Cos they are very busy people the police...... chasing people and solving murders.
How about doing a quick search and look up BuckBuckNo1's threads.
He has a very good thread going on how he taught himself and all what he did in his practice days on the bike until he ventured out further...
Now he is joining in on a few get togethers with the Wellington crew.

PSP, bike, toys, that's a good mid-life crisis material alright. We won't ask about the binoculars and camcorder though.
Welcome aboard. As per earlier comments watch those drivers - paranoia is immaterial, they are out to get you.

 I had that one coming! Haven't used the PSP in about 8 months, nor the binoculars, but was using the camcorder to transfer heaps of digital tape to my Mac. Yep, there's some serious mid life crisis going on here. Anyone wanna swap a bike for a PSP and binoculars? Binoculars + Camcorder, now there's a thought!

Ahhh another rebel alliance member not seduced by the dark side, salutations again to a fellow Mac Rebel! Sorry to hear ya got burgled, seems not too long ago that Leong (fellow kber) was done too :(
Wonder if burglars are trolling here? :Pokey:  Ah well, good on ya for the little gadgets and gear (I think the more the merrier!) Nice to hear you've still got a sense of humor about the whole thing  Just remember when you get your new ride to secure it safely! (I'm so paranoid when I park my bike in Dorkland Central ... or just about anywhere else I can't see it!)

[QUOTE=Lil_Byte;788176]Whats wrong with ex cops.]
Nothing is the simple answer. It's the ones in uniform offering suspension notices, speeding fines, Non compliance orders and summons that cause the pain.
But, like lotto, if ya don't play ya don't have ta pay.

Hi - I have just returned to biking. And I am over 50 - 22 years about since I rode a bike. I got a lot of help from people on this site. Some probably thought I was mad; bought a new SV1000s. Yep probably should have got a 250 at least it would be easier to maneouver at low speed. Have a look at the help I got on the threads I started. My story is in the link in signature. Cheers
