Second time this has happened this week.
Im riding my bike up the road, A STUPID car driver doesn't see me and pulls out infront of me. When I slam my brakes on in order to avoid the car he looks me right in the face and im sure he thinks to himself " serves you right you free-thinking, bike riding bastard" Im sick and tired of car drivers nearly hitting me and then looking at me as to say it's not there fault and then just carry on through the intersection.
Now I know you might be thinking that im some looney rider than rides and 70kms through town but im not. Believe me, I've been hit once by a car and since then i've tried to ride in a 'bubble' of saftey.
This my just be me in my drunken rage but let me know what you think.

every car etc is going to pull out on you, its good luck if they don't....
you have to be their eyes as well as yours.
give yourself options as you come towards a vehicle like that, look at the front wheels and that where the driver is looking (or not looking),
when (WHEN) they do pull into your first line of choice you can refer to the second choice (one you have prepared earlier) and go around the said fuckwit.
think about "what if" at all times
people will always pull out on you, expect them to do so :)

Yes, I agree. My first and hopefully only crash happened when I was going around the round about near noel lemmings or what ever that place is and as I exited the round about a lovely lady decided to remove her car from the nearest park to the round about at litespeed with out checking behind her. She backed straight into me and wrote off my poor innocent ZXR. :shit: I have been riding since I was 4 and I watch the tires, ect and I think thats why I haven't hit any cars so far. It just annoys me how they pretend they saw you all along.

Dont want to burst your 'bubble' Areo, but that sort of thing does/will happen from time to time, we (bikers) are the better road use's no question. We have a ton of vision and i hope, good reaction to such moments? Sometimes it wont turn out the you planned, cant educate every car driver, a bike license should be mandatory before advancing to a cage.....:done:

Yep....I look for head, hand movement you name it..just gives you more thinking time.
I think drivers over here get embarrassed and rather than a simple hands up they do the opposite................but as Kiwi says it is part of the game.
Different topic, but I saw some cage, not disabled card parked in a disabled bay tonight...left a note
"you are parked in my Daughters parking space, do you want her disability".....
probably screw it up but maybe they will think twice next time.

Aero,All car drivers are out to kill you ,remember that ,it might save your life . Yesterday ,southwest m/way ,black jeep pulls into where I was a nano second before . Twenty minutes later , southern motorway another black jeep does the same thing .Today two japanese Remuara tractors occupy my space .Everyday car drivers do something stupid in front of me . They are all IDIOTS .You have to be to drive in Auckland.

Aero, not all drivers are out to kill you.......but just appreciate that bikes can accelerate quickly and they do not always appreciate that.
I drive a Mazda MPV and it is not just bikers who come across bad driving so what I am saying is don't get into this hate cage attitude that some guys have...........not all drivers are bad.

At the moment there’s a lot of road works going along the Pakuranga Highway (Auckland). Two lanes merge into one on, on a gravely, ripped up surface. A mid-80s Japanese car came across and merged almost perpendicular to me, braking and swerving ensued (on my behalf) and the driver looks up from his phone sheepishly; and limp wristedly waves sorry. :bye:
It happens, it irritates me as much as you, guess it’s part of being on two wheels.

Well you got an acknowledgement of guilt which is rare in Auckland eh?

of course not, but they all must be considered guilty before proving themselves innocent

They're not actually OUT to kill us. They're too stupid to formulate such a coherent plan. Killing us is just an incidental side effect of their selfish stupidity.

Never ceases to amaze me that drivers just dont see bikes. and to top it off, the f***en rego is really high. But at least you can look at it this way......... $210, which goes to acc does ensure that you at least get a cart to scape you off the road and take you to a hospital where you get stiched back together. Not a bad cost for health insurance. Go and price the real deal for health insurance..........its not so bad afterall.

Not wanting to steal the topic ...but this is brilliant... I must remember to use that line in future. It's also one of my pet hates, ignorant, inconsiderate people who can't be bothered to walk an extra few metres.

....let me know what you think.Aero,
Since you asked...
When I ride in traffic I'm constantly watching other motorists to see what they are doing, what they might be thinking, where they might be tryig to get to and whether they have seen me.
I'm particularly cautious passing through intersections or when there is a car that wants to pull into my stream of traffic from the left or the right. In such cases I often position my self slightly ahead of, and to the left or right of a car or truck so that there is a large object in my vicinity. The theory being that there is a better chance of the stationary car seeing the larger vehicle near me and therefore NOT pulling out in front of me.
Basically I'm constantly intuitively scanning ahead and behind for motorists behaviour and trying to predict what might do next. Of course this technique won't protect against the really mad cagers who come at you totally out of the blue, but it goes a long way towards being safer.
It's one thing to be in the right as far as the road rules are concerned, but it's better to simply not be there when something goes wrong.
In the two years and 30,000+kms I've been riding I've not had one accident or near miss (touch wood!), which I think is largely due to this habit I've developed.

Yea you gotta hate the blind bastards on the roads. They do it when your in a car aswel so i already knew to expect this and even more so when i started riding my bike. Iv'e had to avoid more while driving my car than my bike but that is 3yrs vs 2 months :dodge:

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, but I'd rather hear this than you posting a thread saying I binned into the car and fcuked up my leg, hip and bike.
Reality about biking is cager clowns will pull out in front of you, but you have to be prepared, I've had worse ones than this and I am sure others have, even bad stories.
Key thing is to place yourself on the correct side of the road when commuting, look ahead, plan and be prepared for the unexpected (ie.a cager pulling out in front of you out of nowhere)
Advantage of bikes is, they are small and hence you can position yourself on different sides on the lane to be more safe. Watch out for this and practise it and see how it goes.
And yes if you get really fucked off give them the old harresment and bang on the window or a talking, or swearing and abusing, it sometimes works, then they won't stare at you like fuckwits!

Hmm... having just read this thread through it really does appear that most (and I repeat most) writers here think that all car drivers are totally blind, thoughtless, brainless twats. How many of you drive cars aswell? I do for one...so does that make me a totally blind, thoughtless, brainless twat too?
Lets face it, you can read a lot on KB that would only add fuel to the arguement that it's bikers that are seen by many as thoughtless, brainless hooligans who think they own the road. Fact is we don't own the road. It's there for everyone's use and enjoyment. But you have to abide by the rules and I'm afraid we as bikers are probably just as bad as other road users at not doing so. Yes I agree, many car drivers could well use some lessons in using their eyes, and hats off to all of us bikers who ride defensively and safely. Sadly there are too many bikers out there who don't. I think my point is that before we label other motorists as totally blind, thoughtless, brainless twats, we should get our own house in order.

I don't think most people think that they all are, it's just that everyone has had bad experiences with people not looking and have therefore adopted the attitude that if you treat them all as being blind bafoons you will be safer. 95% of the time they will look and be safe but its the 5% of the time that they don't you have to watch out for. So yea... i think the attitude just gets adopted as a safety mechanism.
Bikers have the problems of pushing themselves to hard, being arrogant or just being pricks. They generally have more awareness of what is around them and can't be distracted talking on the phone or putting on makeup. We still have our problems but they are generally putting ourselves in more danger than others.
Both have problems, both need different ways of dealing with.

Good point MC. Roll on the day when hand-held phones are banned in vehicles here in NZ. Not to mention the lowest legal driving age!! 15 year olds and "hot" cars do not mix. (IMHO)

that should be a good idea. In Australia talking on a celly whilst driving is illegal and poses heavy penalties!!! but were not Australia and shouldnt take much notice of them. - but this one i nz should imply this law as Australia has.
be much safer!!!
cheers
