For those of you that think he didn't deserve the title!
Tucked under the screen, knee down, and well sideways!
Pure determination.
And you've gotta admit....it's good for the sport to have someone else at the top for a change!
Rossi's had an amazing run of good luck over the years, had to run out sooner or later. That's racing.....

... and a dirt track background (what he started off doing).
I dunno if I've still got it, but there's a clip on youtube or whatever of him riding a SuperRetard (with Biatchi and others). There's one bit where he pops a wheelie, drops it into a stoppie, then slides it, the wheelies again. And going around the corners, he's doing it hybrid style: knee down, but sliding the rear.

he may well be....but he's one of the only ones to be around that height!
Check him when he stands next to just about all of the others....and lets face it, even 5'11" is hardly huge....I'm 5'11" but only weight 70kgs. Still small.

In that picture I see a man that was not to be denied.
I've seen all of the posts about just why Rossi may've crashed.
It's called pressure. And while only a fool would deny that of late Rossi has been untouchable.....only a fool would now say Hayden isn't worthy of the title. He wasn't the one picking his bike out of the gravel Sunday.

Good to see Haydon win the title,he did well to come back from behind on points.
But kinda sad Rossi couldnt pull off the final 990cc championship. He is a real champion and has an incredible mental strength and is the best rider without a doubt.

Like Rossi didn't; always poking his nose at the camera and doing tricks with stethoscopes and stuff like that? In comparison Hayden is rather mild. However, I don't mind that and as above I said I like Rossi, he is the true champion. Of late we have had a great bunch in MotoGP since Max left and took his attitude with him. Capirossi has been fantastic too.

He never won the Daytona 200 or at Isle of Man like Ago did nor 15 world championships riding 2 bikes on the same day. I'm not sure if comparisons are ever apples with apples. Doohan was certainly tough coming back from his disappointment of '92 and I did like him too; oh yeah he was on a Honda.
A lot of people say Ago had it easy, but not when Hailwood was around. The 1967 GP at the Isle of Man was a classic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_British_motorcycle_Grand_Prix.
Then for Ago to silence his critics by switching to Yamaha in '74 and still win the 350 championship and win at Daytona on the TZ750 first time out in USA was special http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/halloffame/hofbiopage.asp?id=112 and then go on to win the 500 championship also on Yamaha the man could ride.
Not to take anything away from Hayden, Rossi or Doohan of course - all champions.

Hayden had nothing to lose whereas Rossi had so much. That sorta pressure fucks with your head. But I guess, it came down to whoever rode better on the day. It is a shame that Rossi couldn't have put his name down in history as having complete dominance over the 990cc era.

Mate...you'll not see me argue the fact that Rossi IS a genius...he's shown that time and time again. But you need to also realise that Rossi has had the luck of the Gods for YEARS! Ever seen him break a bone before this year? Despite some huge crashes? NO. Yeah he had some troubles this year...but that's racing mate...and when it came down to the last race.....all in....it was he who threw it down the road and Hayden that won it! Credit where credit's due mate.

The Honda Hayden was riding was a disadvantage. Hayden had to overcome Honda before he could compete with the other riders. New parts every week and having to take backwards steps every time something didn't work, while the guys he was riding against generally got better every week. Except the Yamaha which went backwards more than once and Edwards' performance was probably more representative of the real performance of the Yamaha than Rossi's. ROssi is worth at least 2 seconds a lap.
Hopefully Hayden will now be able to tell HRC to take their test and development parts and shove them up their arse, much like like Doohan used to tell HRC.

I noticed a comment about Doohan- I read an article where they compared Rossi and Doohan. The basic idea was that Rossi loves racing, he enjoys it and he has a great time doing it and he has never seriously injured himself, while Doohan rode like he was being chased by his own demons, didn't seem to have a great time doing it, and did a fair bit of damage to himself in the process. Very different personalities.

But you need to also realise that Rossi has had the luck of the Gods for YEARS! .
Which sort of reminds me about a Gary Player golf story. Player had just won another major as a result of sinking a seemingly impossible putt. The comentator said to him words to the effect, "Sinking that putt was really lucky."
Player replied, "Yeah, the more I practice the luckier I get."
Perhaps we mortals don't always fully understand what we're looking at. I'm still amazed at Milandri's flourish at the finish of the Aust GP...
Fact is most of those guys can ride like that... Some (eg Biaggi) are very smooth, some (eg Hayden) can slide it, others (eg Rossi) can do it all.

Here's one of Nicky on the RS750,that's all we need eh Merv? The other is a painting of King Kenny on the bike they couldn't pay him enough to ride.I sometimes use it as a wall paper. He only used it once, just to clinch the title which hung on one race.It had enough speed on the straights to blitz anyone, and destroyed the rear tyre....but it must of been a handfull.
I've used that photo of Nicky before to show how with no front brake he has fully compressed the forks and loaded the front tyre, pushing the rear wheel out at the same time. He'll push the rear out some more, then hold it with the throttle as he powers out of the turn. This is why the American riders were able to cope with such evil handling bikes - but at the moment it was Rossi and not Edwards who could ride around the Yamaha problem this year.....and Caparossi on the Ducati would put any dirt tracker to shame!

Flattrack is different than the dirt riding Rossi would do in Europe - on a Mile they do 140mph on the straights and throw it sideways in the corners at over 100mph,that is why the American's are so good at high speed slides....not because they fang around an MX track. And as Ivan points out, even the ''slower'' speeds on a 1/4 mile speedway are damn fast riding hard out, totaly different to off road riding.....but all skills are usefull to add to your package.

They started using rear brakes in the '70's Merv, not used in the traditional sense on the track.
Here's another good shot of Nicky,it really shows he's riding the bike in a different style than the others.Brings to mind the Kenny Roberts maxim - ''You'll never lose the front if you're on the gas'' Look how often Stoner and Pedrosa lose the front wheel....how often does Hayden go down from a front wheel tuck?
Well, he went down from a front wheel tuck in Portugal, just happened to be Pedrosa's wheel.....

Great picture Motu! To me, that picture shows just how much they ride those 990's like 250's now. Huge lean angles with lots of corner speed....it's no wonder the young guns coming up from the 250's are going so well.
They're not really simply getting into the corner as deep as poss then picking them up and squirting them out like they used to with the 500's.
Can you dig up some pics from the early to mid nineties as a comparison?
I bet the 90's era guys are 'sitting on top' of the bikes more....shoulders open.
Also....how many more laps do you think the Ducati's rear tyre would do?

100% correct there, and hats off to Bayliss and Capirossi!
But......I doubt the tyre in that picture would've won a 30 lap race.
