John you are the best cunt on this site. I want to help tyou fix up old bikes. Don't give up the faith brother.

I wish this shit didn't happen to people like you.

I get drunk and life seems so unfair.

Don't leave us, you've made our lives better.

Hey John and Donna, I just don't know what to say, words just seem so inadequate!
Thinking of you and wish you both well for the future.
Your world may be upside down right now but it will get better.
Strength and best wishes, John.

It is so comforting to go online and read all your thoughts. John is still being kept under sedation following his op so that his body has a chance to heal - whenever they start to wake him up, he is in too much pain so they sedate him again. He is still in ICU and no word yet as to when he will get moved to the Trauma Unit or to Burwood but I will update as often as I can - God bless you all Donna

I just came across this thread, never met John, and I don't think we've talked on online, but best wishes and all the best. Amazing to see the great support out there for a fellow biker. I live just round the corner from Burwood also, so when he's up to it I'll pop in and introduce myself. Yell out if there's anything you need, it's no trouble to call in.

Evening Inline.....and Donna :)

Stify and I have made a donation to help with whatever it is that the two of you might need to make this journey more comfortable.

Thanks for the updates Donna, I really appreciate your doing this for us and others here at KB who really do care about John.

I can't help thinking of when I had damaged my knee and I thought I was not going to be able to ride my bike to get my Full Licence.
I appreciated talking to you (Inline) how positive you were to me about when I would be able to ride again....your words were all based around following the advise of the doctors and believing that I could make it happen....

Kia Kaha John & Donna.

If you are still in Chch when I come down on work next I will come and visit.

Read the article in the paper and wondered if it was anyone we knew...only to find out who it actually was and then reading this awesome thread just now. I know your neighbour and met you briefly once, even disagreed on KB a few times but damn....no one deserves this.

If there is anything you, Donna and the family need, you know to just ask. There are enough locals here to help out with whatever...only too pleased to help out in any way I can.

All the best wishes in the recovery dude.

Been overseas for 2 weeks and come back to read this.

Even though (like many others) I haven't met IL4 in the flesh, I've definitely had a laugh over some of his posts in the past. Not over this thread, though - hell of a thing to have happen. All the best John and Donna - stay strong.

Donna has asked me to update this thread on her behalf firstly by thanking everyone who has sent their best wishes and also to the generous people who have made donations.
John is still in intensive care on a respirator unable to talk (a tube down his throat) and under sedation. He is getting very frustrated with the tube and may require a tracheotomy to allow him to talk.
Donna returns to New Plymouth this weekend so John will be left with other family members in Chch in the mean time.
Also bug UP's to Speedygirl for the way she has taken in Johns whanau and looked after them as well as supporting Donna while in Chch.

Been there, done that for many months a while back.

It will be very frustrating for him, and will probably make him angry and other side effects.
If its possible to convey to him that it WILL get better, and support to that effect works wonders on a drugged up sedated mind usually.
Times passes so slowly when you are that side of the bed, but with the time passing, health improves.

My neighbour spent several months in Burwood this year after a fall from a horse and she's doing ok now, its taken a while but she's up and about ok.

Pass on my best wishes, and convey from my experiences that it may seem a real bastard now, but it will get better.

Hi everyone
I am back from Chch again following a long week of sitting with my man and talking to him and not getting any response - did remind me of being at home with him and him sitting there with his laptop engrossed in this site and me talking to him and not getting any response!!
John remains sedated but his infection is under control and the CT scan today showed that his lungs are finally healing and there is very little fluid left in them now (hurray) He is still needing a lot of help with his breathing though so the respirator remains in place and they are still discussing whether they will do the trachestomy or not - the type they want to do is a temporary measure and he still will be unable to talk but he doesn't have to be sedated which will be good.
He is looking good and the doctors are all really optimistic - he is going to be okay but it is just taking a long time for the healing process to happen
Thanks again for all your support, best wishes and monetary donations - all of us in John's whanau are just overwhelmed with the love and support that has been shown to us.
I will make sure I log on every couple of evenings and keep you all up-to-date on what is happening. I phone Christchurch every day just to keep up-to-date
Speedy girl - that is one awesome chick and I feel honoured to know her.

Mr Inline Four is doing okay - he has all them nurses running around after him while he lies back in bed and snoozes all day. He is much better now that he has got the tracheotomy and able to be less sedated, although still a bit dazed and confused. Seems to understand what he is being told though. Still no word on when he will be well enough to have visitors or when he will be moved to Burwood. My guess is that we will all know when he feels better because the first thing he will ask for is his computer! Speedygirl will let him know where the thread is as she is looking after his his laptop (and other toys) at her place.

You guys are all awesome and I am serious about having a huge reception for our wedding. I am planning it for early February 2008 around Waitangi Day so that it can be a weekend thing. Will post more details as I plan them.

Haven't been on KB for quite a long time, but when I was first on IL4 was one who had positive things to say to me both on the forums and in the chatroom. Never had a chance to meet him in person but he came across as a really decent guy. I just can't believe it's happened. Can't turn my back for 5 minutes, honestly!

Just don't know what to say, I'm totally gutted that one of KB's finest (and a decent Canterbury bloke) has had that happen. My thoughts are with you guys absolutely. I'm glad you're still kicking IL4. Just remember that as long as you can draw breath you don't give up fighting this thing.

Any update on when he can take visitors? I leave for England in a little over two weeks, but I'd like to be able to drop in and visit if it's in any way possible. I'll be sure to bring something tasty in with me :)

Ok call me slow... but I've only just found out IL4's Big News. Crikey. I've chatted to him in the chat room and he is always so helpful and kind and positive! You're a top bloke IL4 and we miss you!

It's actually a bit deja vu for me - my brother (also named John) had a car crash 17 years ago and broke T6 & T7. He had pins and plates inserted and has had to have a few ops over the years because with a crushing injury like that you can get bits of bone kind of floating around that have to be kept under control in case they start causing trouble!

Anyway my brother John had a girlfriend at the time and she stuck with him through the hard times. Now they're married and a couple of years ago they gave me twin baby nieces!

They also own a couple of companies, one here and one in Canada. My bro buys up old cars and fixes them up as a hobby. All this from a wheelchair. So IL4 may have swapped one set of wheels for another [I know it's early days yet and I'm not assuming it's permanent, although it might be]. Wheels is wheels and I bet he'll be racing whatever kind of wheels he has before long!

Donna, look after yourself. Please spend some of the donated money on yourself. NOBODY will complain if you use it to get yourself something pretty to wear to cheer up you and your man. You've got a long haul ahead of you both. In the hard times just remember how many people are thinking of you and sending their love to you.

I would like to add my name to the list of people for you to PM or call if you EVER need ANYTHING, even just a midnight chat. Will PM you my phone number.

John is doing better over the past few days. They are slowly reducing his meds and he is slowly working out what works and what doesn't by prodding himself and seeing what hurts. He stills has the tracheotomy in so cannot talk verbally but is becoming adept at writing down his needs and also facial and hand signals are working just fine.

His mum told me yesterday that when he got hold of the whiteboard his very first message was "it sure is hard to get a drink around here!" As it was only 11am I hope that he meant water and not his favourite Woodstock!!!

I second message was that he loves me - so that made me cry when Mum Megan told me.

He is still spending a lot of time sleeping but if any of the Chch kiwibikers want to pop in for a short time over this weekend, I am sure that he would like that - just give ICU a call first to check what is the best time. He has no family except for Speedygirl there at the moment so it would be nice to know he had a visitor or two

Cheers Donna:rockon:

Had good news yesterday from Speedygirl who said that John is much improved and in really good spirits. He has improved so much over the past couple of days that if he keeps up the good work they are now talking about his tracheotomy coming out in days rather than weeks. :sunny: That means I will be able to phone him up and talk to him in person. It also means that they may then transfer him to the trauma unit and he will be able to have his cell phone and computer so watch out because then he will be back on line!!!
I had ACC around on Friday to look at the house and give ideas as to what they think are the best ideas for modifications. Their first idea was to move :gob: but I put them straight and said that selling my house was not an option so they would have to work on making it liveable. The stupid thing is that the John will be assigned an OT and Case Manager in Chch when he goes to Burwood and so everything is going to take much longer because of me only going down once a month!! But I have an architect coming in the next couple of weeks and he will draw up the changes that I want and then it will be a matter of finding out how much ACC will cough up and how much we will have to fund. One of their ideas was for me to get a garage built at the back of the section but why would I want to do that when we already have a perfectly good garage:oi-grr:
Anyway that is my rant and rave for the week:done: Once again thank you for all your support and help

As for the ACC people telling you and wanting to put another garage on the back of your section ... Like WHAT ! Are they blind or something.
Tell them to open up their eyes and look at the other garage.
The money could be used for modifications to your home.

Oh well ACC do work in strange ways at times.

Great news Donna! Yay for John, stay strong and keep your spirits up. Remember that you can get the case manager to deal with you anytime by phone or email and it would be a good idea to contact some people in your area who have similar situations to John, they will give you the low down on the traps to avoid in your modifications. Some things are a good idea on paper but need adjusting in practice.

John is slowly beginning to improve and the nurses are encouraging him to be more independant and do things like shave and clean his teeth, instead of lying back and being waited upon:innocent:
His mum left today and has headed back to Perth so he has a couple of days on his own and then his son Brett who's 6 1/2 arrives for a few days accompanied by his mother (the EX-wife!!). They leave after the weekend and then its only 3 days before I arrive and I can't wait - the days are passing so slowly
John's biggest concern when his mum left was not who would be there to keep him company or to read to him (they have been reading The Hobbit) BUT would he run out of lemonade - he is allowed to have two sips an hour. He made his mum buy him several bottles of the stuff before she could leave to ensure that he would not run short!: The consultants have been around from Burwood and their latest plan is that John will be transferred there next week so he is there before Christmas. doctor: This all depends on whether or not his breathing keeps improving and whether they can get him down to the small portable ventilator
Thanks everyone for your continued kind wishes and help and also for the supportive PMs. You guys all rock:rockon:

Cheers Donna

Ok so sniper doesnt like to read out loud...... But I am sure that there are other KBers in Chch that could help out.... even if they arent into the Hobbit...
Mind you by the time they have finished reading it to John, they may be hooked on it.

:innocent: Hi everyone
twas the night before Christmas (well almost) and John is astir - he is still in ICU because there are no beds out at Burwood and now looking at the beginning of January. I got some extra days off this week and came down on Sunday evening - speedygirl picked me up and we snuck me into ICU - she asked him if he wanted to phone me and he wrote her he was waiting for me to phone he thought I would have by now - so I pulled the curtain back next to his bed and said "or would you rather speak to me in person" His jaw dropped to the ground and he looked absolutely gobsmacked :gob: - it was a wonderful sight He has improved so much in this last week since I have arrived down here and it gladdens my heart to see. He has finally got the confidence to be weaned off the ventilator during the day and is just using a dehumider through his trachy tube. On Monday he wheeled himself halfway down the ward by wheelchair and he has been standing up each day on the tilt table which he loves. Yesterday they let down his trachy cuff for the first time and he spoke - his first words were "hi doll, I love you" :sunny: Then today he got his sister Rachel to go out and buy me a dozen red roses - who says that romance has died :innocent:
So this message goes out to all our kiwi biker friends to say "have a wonderful festive season" We think you are all wonderful people and please take care on the roads over the festive season - there are a lot of idiots out there in cars!!!!!!!!!!
Love IL4 and Coaster:done:

Just back from visiting John and we had a bit of bad news today - he has aspiration pneumonia which means more IV antibiotics and the worst part is he is nil by mouth again. He is already in withdrawals for his apple juice and blue powerade. BUT he is staying in Ward 19 and will keep the mini trachy in so can still talk and boy is he making up for lost time.
He has become physically unwell but is still emotionally quite chirpy. Is looking forward to going to Burwood Spinal Unit and starting the rehab. We watched a programme on Sunday morning called Attitude about the Wheel Blacks and one of them has a four wheel drive motorised wheelchair and John has now decided that would be a great thing to have.
He is slowly getting more confidence which is a great thing.

The wedding is going to be on Sunday 30th December 2007 so anyone who wants to come - PM me your details - name and address and then I will know where to send the invites. Everyone is welcome - it will be one big party and a brilliant way to end this year.

Yep you will soon be wheelieing around on the two back wheels real soon....
Learning to do jumps off curbs and flying back up those curbs......
Doing your own burnouts/donuts in the wheelchair as well.

It wont/shouldn't take too long to master the wheelchair....

Build up your upper body strength and you will be having wheelchair races with Motobob.

Have to concur with most of the (on topic) posts here. I don't know you except through KB but can't help but be moved by your situation.

Having been confined to a wheelchair, (which I never thought I'd get out of), I have personal experience of the challenges you face. It is great to see you have a good sense of humour and the strong support of so many friends and family.

Once a biker, always a biker and never think you don't belong here because you can no longer ride.

All the best for your rehabilitation, perhaps you and Paul can be of encouragement and support to each other, as well.

Mrs. Edbear and I offer our kindest regards and thoughts.

13th January 2007, 10:04
Hey John keep the RD250LC and mount its engine in your wheel chair, next week when I get a new arc welder I'm mounting a 125cc two stroke (GT125 p-twin :blip: ) into a wheel chair. The engine is dropping one cylinder and the points are fucked so need to do some modifying with exhuast and shit but she still pulls 60 kmp/h in an RG frame on the one cylinder so all good. Give you a race!

RT527
13th January 2007, 14:55
I reckon a trike Chariot would be kool....So instead of the engine in the back like most have ..have a normal position motor then have an area thats like a chariot with ramps in the back that way john just rolls on in pulls up the ramp and off he goes wonder if you used a shaft driven bike as a start then add an axle and diff and build the area above for the wheelchair with the handle bars coming right back .

wonder if we have any mechanics with the parts etc to be able to build something like that .

RiderInBlack
14th January 2007, 12:14
Trikeworks Taupo have done quite a few cool bike-ta-trike conversions. Most Trikes I've seen have the engine in "normal" bike position. Racey Rider had a cool avatar of a R1 trike at one time.
The only one's I've seen with the engine in the back are the homey VW conversion jobshttp://www.vwtrike.net/images/hidden3.jpg.

I'm thinking of later down the line getting a trike with a Jap car engine and auto gearbox which will need to be converted to hand controls (cost of about 4 grand alone). I've just had to argue like fark with LTSA, who until today was going to take my motorcycle licience from me (not without a fight). Finally found a staff member who could and would answer my questions and after a short simple exchange of viewpoint, I get to keep my motorcycle licience on the understanding that any ride I have in the future is kitted out with the hand control I need as a paraplegic. Happy to say John's back in New Plymouth & settling into his flat at Omahunui on the corner of Northgate & Mangorei road. It will take a few days to get comfortable & stocked up and he'll be back online when the phone line is sorted. Cheers to everyone who has had a hand in helping him - he really appreciates it. We may need a local roster to pop in & make sure he's behaving himself and running errands as although he is able to drive by himself John is unable to get his current wheelchair into his car with him.
