Motorcyclist and pillion killed when their bike hit a 4X4 head-on on Riordans Bridge on Sh7 in the Lewis Pass.
Bloody grim eh?

Sorry, at present that's all I know.

Was in this mornings paper, reported as being the pilot vehicle of a 'wide-load' vehicle. RIP to both.

Whoops, mis-read the article. They hit the pilot vehicle, which as SD said, was more than likely a 4x4. I'll edit my first post.

Dom Post says the collision was with the pilot vehicle for a wide load.

Head-on on a bridge sounds like the bikers missed seeing the pilot vehicle coming.

Looks like I posted this simultaneously with you OAB.

oops cheer's lad's, however still i have seen this bastards miles ahead of the wide load vehicle at times, but this may been the 4x4 in the middle of the bridge?

His name was Hayden. His wife was riding pillion. They were riding with a good mate of mine. Nelson was going to be their first rally.

Sorry to hear that manuboy, hope your mate is handling it okay. Just another reminder to be thankful for everyday you have.

Um dont think he missed seeing the pilot vehicle...more likely he saw it right up to impact......Otherwise it would have been mcyclists collide with truck carrying wide load.
My condolances to Family and Friends , Sad to see this happen as most pilot vehicles are lit up like xmas trees and on bridges they dont normally go very fast across, I have transported some wide loads b4 and we allways slow down where it is unsafe, it is the resonsibility of the pilot to warn vehicles that a oversize load is coming , it is the truck drivers ultimate responsibility to move the load safely.
this was either an unfortunate accident or someones to blame.

Either way 2 more riders are down and as a mcyclist this is a sad day.

Unfortunately down in this area we often see pilot vehicles travelling some distance (measured in kms, not meters) in front of the vehicle they are escorting, and at a much higher speed. Other times there is almost no gap between the pilot vehicle and the load, and hence almost no warning. I'm not saying that either was the case here, as there is too much that we don't yet know.

Is the bridge where it happened a one way bridge by any chance?

Bugger sounds like they need a shake up thats not good practice.
just cause an oversize load has a pilot doesnt give them any more rights on the road ...in fact we need to be more responsible than normal.

Shee-it manuboy, sorry to hear that, always seems worse when it's a 'person' that is known to somebody you know yourself.

From what I heard at the rally.. this couple had 6 kids!! (I don't know if that is accurate or not...) A terrible loss to our motorcycling 'family'!!

At the rally, the band played "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd, in dedication to the couple. May they rest in peace.. together forever, cruising the open roads in freedom.

My thoughts & love go to their family & friends.

Yup - read the same thing and it sent a shudder straight through me.

It was something that haunted us for years while our kids were little and a major reson why we didn't ride together much then.

RIP you two - Didn't know you but we shared the same wind...

Did the rally organising club/group do/contribute anything toward the family?

I hear this Nelson rally is very large and takes ALOT of money.

Good question.. it needs to be clarified first however..

IF they were coming up here for the NRTC Rally at the Maitai Camp.. OR, as I understand it.. there was some kind of HOG gathering here too over the same weekend.. PLUS I heard that one of the 'gangs'.. (dunno which one) was having some kind of gathering too.. so.. if it can be confirmed exactly WHICH event the couple were coming too.. we can go from there...
