If this thing lives up to the weight and power claims (and Duc don't normally overstate the hp of their bikes like the Japs), it will unstoppable!!
http://www.motorcycledaily.com/08november06_ducati1098.htm
From the above link:
"This incredible new machine produces 160hp and 90.4lbs/ft of torque, which results in making the 1098 the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle in the world, with the highest torque-to-weight ratio of any sport bike. In addition, the 1098 is also the lightest open class Superbike available, weighing 381 pounds."

And if my math is serving me correctly....that's 172kgs.....and most 1000cc fours weight that with more hp and torque....unstoppable? Pah....

Like I said, Duc don't normally overstate their hp...what they state is usually close to what you get at the wheel. Add in the fact that a 999s with it's meek on-paper stats will often lap as quick or quicker than a Gix 1k...and this bike could be a weapon.

Plain and simple, that Ducati is the sexiest looking bike ever. If I had the choice between Keira Knightley and Holly Valance jelly wrestling in my back garden or that Ducati, I'd take the Ducati. I'm not saying it would be an easy decision, but I would take the Ducati.

Given that Suzuki haven't release the performance or power figure on the new GSXR1000 yet, and it's not out till April, they've got plenty of time to ensure that the GSXR1000 tears the 1098 a new arsehole. For half the price. Without breaking down or costing $500 a service. And can be insured.

thats a great idea, everyone should just buy a GSXR thou, that way you will be the only one with a GSXR thou. Its not like every second bike you see is...... a GSXR thou now is it? Who gives a shit about which has more horsepower, if you want to have the most hp and the fastest bike, get a Busa or ZX14 and stick a turbo on it. GSXR's are common as a Ford Falcon or Honda Civic.
Ducati's used to have reliability issues, pre 1997 , and with Suzuki's latest run, I don't think I am the only one to notice how many gremlins the past few generation of GSXR's have had, not exactly bulletproof are they?
Who knows, it might be nice to have a bit of diversity on NZ roads.

This man knows the difference! Why the fuck would you buy a 'cutting edge sportsbike' unless you want the best? Want something different? Buy a Ducati 'Indiana'. You wanna ride bikes at the top of the scale?...makes sense to ride the best...especially when it's way more affordable than an inferior product.

I'm not disputing that.
Its just like listening to a demented COCKatoo saying "get a gixxer, get a gixxer" every thread about a new bike, your guaranteed someone will turn that fucking parrot back on. I'm not saying gixxers are crap or slow by anymeans, its just boring to see the same bike around every corner (normally in a ditch).
I know a few riders that can get around a track, and pretty much any road in NZ faster on a 600 then most people can get around on a thou, so numbers on paper about who has the biggest balls and HP means fuck all.

Unless I missed a thread The MV is the fastest proven production litre bike on the market.
Personally I with you Postie, diversity is a great thing. I'd definitely add one to my aircraft hanger full of bikes.
As for the GixxerFanBoyBrigade, they've been here longer than I have (although some of the names have changed along the way). Just think of them like rebelious teens who are all wearing the pants around their ankles and caps on backwards in order to be inderviduals like the rest of their "friends".
Seriously each to their own. I just don't see the point in fanboyism. Rather rate comparitive products on their merits compared to my requirements.
Anyway at this stage any litre bike is 750cc's too much bike for me.

Fastest? All sports bikes are restricted to 187 MPH...
Rate 'comparitive' products on their 'merits' compared to my requirements??
If your 'requirements' are wanting to spend more for an inferior product simply for the reason of being 'different'.....good for you.
"Any litre bike is 750cc's too much bike for me"
Are you saying that you have no experience with litre bikes?
Are you a good enough rider to 'push' a 'litre bike'?
Modern litre bikes are all too good for most riders.

If you get time, have a read through this link here (http://www.onewheeldrive.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=590&Itemid=0&limit=1&limitstart=0) and see if you still don't think that you would be riding the best!!
The 1098 has a new engine with less weight and more power, and using motoGP derived technology in the induction and throttle body. Magnesium cylinder heads.
Öhlins fully adjustable rear shock(height, spring and damper), 43mm Öhlins with low friction Titanium Nitride sliders forks, Brembo Monobloc callipers with 330m lightweight disks, forged-aluminium wheels and a new chassis, swing arm, tricked out cooling system, its in more detail in that link.
The S comes with 3 CD's for your laptop to programme and analyse the bike and rider performance.
So is all round Öhlins and Brembo brakes considered an inferior product???

Well you see mate....the thing IS....if you're gonna try and shoot someone down for "not knowing what you're talking about..."...you've gotta take XTRA care that you don't make a twat of yourself doing so.....
And by the way....magnesium has been used as material for all sorts of engine covers by Suzuki since the 70's. And nitrided fork sliders? K1 1000's had it back then.....and if Suzuki wanted to sell their GSXR for 30 K, it'd have Ohlins gear on it too....

Sweet, but according to that link though, your choice is red, red, red or the tri colour, but the tri colour with the Ities flag will cost another $5K or more.

For you Gixer lovers: The point is that anyone who wants to buy the 1098 will obviously be able to afford a GSXR1000 - IF THEY SO CHOOSE. Reason they will go for the Ducati is that they will enjoy owning it and riding it more than the Suzuki, they are not worried about whether the GSXR is faster or lighter/whatever. Its all about personal preferences and getting the best bike for you, that you can afford.
And maybe "Crasher" would like to come out of the closet and admit that he has a bit of a soft spot for Ducatis?

Are you saying that I’m not allowed to have an opinion now on KB just because I’m with someone? Or that my opinion is not as valid as everyone elses in regards to the new ducati.
I don’t need to come to the rescue of Postie or anyone else but I will support those opinions which I think are valid and am equally entitled to disagree, and in this instance I have taken the stance that you are arguing for the sake of it, and that your personal attacks are beyond the call of a well argued debate showing your lack of a wider understanding and extreme prejudice.

The new Ducati will be good. The 07 R1, CBR, ZX10 and GSXR will be too...let alone the new MV. They will ALL be better bikes than we are riders. But desmodronics while a great idea, are time consuming AND expensive to maintain. Most big Ducati's etc are bought for 'wank value' lets face it.
Big Japanese stuff is as good, at much less cost to purchase and maintain.
And don't even mention resale you Ducati people! We've got an 04 999 here with only 1200 km's on it that we're struggling to get 20k for.....
Anyone with too much money that wants the ultimate wank....buy a Ducati Moto GP Rep. The rest of you.....put the money you saved by buying a GSXR toward one.

I would consider that to be amateurish at best mate!
The 'ultimate' would surely have left your wrist with enough 'left' in the tank for an encore!

thirty grand? it'll be more than that.I suspect not. Ducati are saying the RRP is USD$14,995, which is less than the RRP on a 999 at the moment.
But who cares? We are happy looking like copycats on blue and white GSXRs..

If you think $30K is expensive for a new Ducati, you should check out the mighty Hyosung GT250R at Mr Motorcycles, they have it advertised in the Dec Issue of Kiwi Rider for a mere $67,595 ride away. Page 272 if you don't believe me.
They also have a new ZX636 for $15,649 or a new ZX10 for $15,649, what a bargain.

Feeeeel the love in this thread. Wow.
Fact - Ducati make nice bikes, with nice bits, but you pay for it.
Fact - The Japanes make nice bikes, with quality bits, but not as 'trick' as the Italians, but you pay less.
Fact - There will always be more Jap bikes on the road then Dukes, it's a price thing.
Fact - Owning a Duke does not mean you enjoy riding it more than the guy riding his 1988 CBR250.
Fact - Ride what you fucking like, and don't worry what others ride.

you're so full of shit......
Hi Dover - you seem to have BIG issues with people who like or own Ducatis. If you never want to own one thats fine by me but no need to slag me off like that. And FYI I part own a GSXR1000 so I am not a "brand snob".

No, I have no issues with people who like or own Ducatis, I have mates that fit in to those categories.
I have issues with people that are full of pretentious wankery like you were spouting in the post I quoted. Harping on about being able to afford this or that and enjoying it more. Pure shit.
