Anyone got one and if so what are they like?

What does everyone think of flip up lids? Do you reckon they make you look like an old git or a cop git?

They're stamped as being suitable only for those 55 years or older.

If you want to be able to talk to people and eat or drink with your helmet on, check out the UVEX brand full face helmets, which are apparently pretty good.

Flip-up helmets are only an option for pin heads.

Had one since I was 25 so I must be a complete pin-head. They're a bit louder than a normal lid but seriously handy in town, when filling up, on hot days, when asking for directions, etc etc etc. Seriously comfortable and usual good Shoei build quality and the visor replacement thingie is the best. Replacement visors are ridiculously priced though so buy 2 or 3 at a time on Ebay. Wear ear plugs on longer journeys and they're great.

Softcocks on litre sportsbikes don't tend to like them though as they don't go match the "image" of one piece leathers with racing humps or sidi boots.

Hi there

I tried the Shoei on when looking for a flip lid, so I must be a pin head too? But each to there own.

It didnt fit me properly so I decided on the Nolan N102, bloody good helmet :)
Go into Motomail and try them all on and see which one fits you better, at the end of the day its not the looks you really need them for

Cheers Scott

- When filling they'll usually ask to take the helmet off anyways
- Hot days they don't make any difference, in order to pass the CE standard testing they have to lock the front into place, making it technically illegal to ride a bike without the lid closed, so can't see any gains there.
- Directions? Just follow the road ahead.

As they can see my face I've never been asked to take off a flip up lid. I don't know anyone who's been asked to take off a flip up lid at a petrol station but I guess there's always an exception.

Technically yes, but show me anyone who's been prosecuted for this? Hell, the 'chopper' riders don't seem to get much hassle for wearing piss pot helmets so I can't see a cop bothering about someone riding with a lid flipped up.

I tried that once and ran out of gogo juice

I think they are great and I am under 55 years old! Had my Nolan for about 8-10 years and don't think I would go back to a standard full face. Likely to buy another Nolan. Sometimes ride with the lid up when it is really hot, although the ventilation system seems to work fine.

It came down to a choice between the Nolan N102 and the Shoei for me. I tried both of them on on several occasions, and eventually decided on the Nolan.

Go and talk to Lou up at AMPS. I got my Nolan there. I'm pretty sure they stock the Shoei, too. He might also be able to sharpen the deal for a KB'er.

The guy from schubert (not sure if thats spelled right) came to work the other day. Reasonably knowlegable german fulla who told me that flip top helmets are not as strong as normal full face helmets.

They can snap off the front section if you hit the road hard though none of the cops at work who have binned their bikes have had any problems with the baer ones.

Interesting,considering Schuberth make a flipface

Why? he was simply saying that the full face helmets are stronger (which they also sell) and that flip flap ones are not as strong.

I hope you are more discriminating when assessing evidence D50.
The better flip-fronts, Nolan, Shoei, Schuberth, to name three, are tested to the same specs as any full-face.
If you do manage to tear the chin bar off one, you will be dead.
If you had the same situation with a full face, you will be dead.

Dude why the low blow about my job? What has it got to do with policing?

Im just saying what the sales rep from schuberth told me.

The point I am making, is that you are not in possession of the facts, so you shouldn't repeat hearsay statements.
I also find it strange that Udo would bag a style of helmet that he sells.
Are you sure the guy you spoke to was him? Dark hair, beard, noticeable German accent.

Have looked at the science too.. and figure if you manage to smash the front off a flip top you will have other worries which are a bit more pressing.

I have been a pin-head for the last few years, I thought about going back to full face but eventually decided to go for the N102. It's a good lid, I havn't got the bluetooth system for it yet (after xmas I hope)

I find the visor is a bit loose, at about 200km wind (head on in to 90km wind at 110km/h) the tinted sun visor will snap shut. But apart from that it is a good lid.

Hmmm, first thing I did was take the golf shade off. I didn't like it. Normally I stick a pair of sunnies on under the visor.
