IMHO evasive manouvers and cornering in the wet need to be under the belt before emergency braking.
I base this on if you have no bike stability in the wet all the practice at braking in the world will do you no good.
In the wet you are more likely to take a corner than need an emergency stop.
On the other hand if it gets a bit twisted it pays to know how to straigten up before you give it a go live.
If you know how to turn in a hurry in the wet that will get you around a lot more trouble than you are likely to stop in.
If all goes well we can try some emergency stops in the wet when the tyres are warmer, but I would prefer to see some people showing some confidence and skills before we launch into wet weather braking practice.
Wet weather braking practice for me involves a carpark, a repeatable speed, and seeing how many spaces I can stop in.
Eg go around once at 50kmph and execute a no hurry stop from a landmark.
Note how many spaces that took and repeating trying to stop one space shorter everytime.
The big difference between dry and wet braking is that you still pull the lever just as hard, you just have to be more progressive about it.
Being progressive properly will heat the discs quickly and load the shocks properly. These are not so important in the dry where there is plenty of grip and tyres and brakes retain the temperature quite well.
In the wet these return to ambient very quickly.
If you only ever practice grabbing a fistful that will be your first reaction in an incident, even if there is a better exit strategy.
In the wet this will in many cases lock the front wheel, and the same attitude will lock the rear.
If you know how to be progressive, smooth and the difference between a exit and shit must stop you can brake really hard, with practice even when tipped in (do not try this until you have done braking in the wet often).
In the wet you have a lot more control than most bikers realise, you just have to be smooth enough to take full advantage of the grip you paid all that money for.
Don't believe me? Take the time to find out slowly.:Punk:

Really truly I do not have the nerve ,I Imagine it to be like ice skating on wheels.
You can do it so long as you stay smooth and don't rush anything.
When I was on an L plate I rode as often as I could in the wet figuring that if I could ride in the wet I could ride any time.
Personally I think this is why even at an enthusiastic pace or under hard braking most pillions complain that I was taking it too easy.
In the beginning I found the best way to get a good smooth action was to sing cheesy little ditties.
Takes your mind off the perceived danger and allows you to focus on the events around you. Songs you like are not such a good idea as you lose track of what you are doing.
A motocross riding friend who taught me the basics of riding said that was how he focused during the start and in the mud. It helped me a lot, try it. If it does not help try something else. Someone else I mentioned it to likes to recite his times tables. After a while when your confidence has improved you will stop without noticing.

Um. Let us just bear in mind that many of the "learner" type bikes have tyres as standard that are very shitty in the wet.

Exactly why I propose we don't go straight into braking in the wet.
However if they can ride those tyres in the wet they can ride any tire in the dry.

I will be there tonight, even in pissing rain.
My riding yesterday was extremely reckless, in the rain too, I had 7 potential death causing incidents, from oil on the road, white lines, and my own carelessness weaving in and out of traffic on the motorway at very high speeds...
I could do with talking about safe riding, calm me down a bit... otherwise everytime I have serious personal issues and jump on a bike, it could be the last time I do.
Confession over. I need a hug and a beer.

Blondini, riding in the rain is actually fine, but you need the tyres that can handle it. As Ixion so eloquently pointed out.... yours need some attention. You're probably better off speaking to someone relatively new to riding about their perception of what to learn (KeyStone comes to mind).
The lessons to be learned will be fresh for them - they'll recall what to learn and do whereas I can't remember all the stuff to be learned - most of it goes on instinct now.

If it is raining, I wont be able to come. I have only been on the road a few times and progressed to the motorway the other day with trepidation. I am a real newbie. I was happy enough to head west on the motorway today with an escort, but I am not at all keen to do this in the rain.
I figure if I make rules about not riding in the rain for the first wee while until I get road and bike experience under my belt, then I should stick to them. Gotta stay safe whilst I am new on the road (and of course when I'm an old fart to). I can move to wet riding when I have more confidence in my own ability on the bike.
If I'm not there - have lots of fun.

The only "bikers" on this site that have never had to ride home in the wet on a supposedly fine day are either not real bikers (also known and fair weather riders), or they only ride in countries that don't have rain.
I have gone out in blue skies only to get rained on in ten minutes.
My knees are getting better at telling the weather but I still go prepared for anything.
Many was the shirt ruined by wearing leather in rain that fell unexpectedly.

Rub in some dish liquid, leave for 5-10 minutes hose off. Job done.
Dish liquid is a mild degreaser that does not eat rubber.
Spray on degreasers eat rubber if left in place too long.

Next one... indicated left.. went right.. everyone went left, my goup and I right... we got lost... ended up turning back... then I could smell burning rubber... stopped to find my front mudguard had bent downwards and rubbing on tyre... geesh... limped back to westgate... ...then ontop of all that, I see a past 'one-night-stand' sitting having a drink with some of her friends at miss q's.... that was a minty moment... thankfully she did not have the guts to come over!

to begin with, he indicated the wrong way at the round about. but i corrected him and we went the right way. (he was in front)

Spray on degreasers eat rubber if left in place too long.
In case some of the people on this thread did not already know, Pretty much all aerosol or silicon products are bad for tyres.
Even tyre shine will reduce your grip. If you put it on your tyres I would not recommend riding in the rain until it dulls.
When it rains the silicon runs down into your tread.
Aerosols contain chemicals that can change the properties of the rubber currently on the surface.
Most modern rubber contains petroleum products (or synthetic compounds with similar properties). Putting a degreaser on it can cause faster wear, softer side walls and or reduced traction.
Should you feel the need to clean your tyres use a mild detergent and lots of water.
Yes you tyre picks up worse as you ride around, but there is no point in giving fate a helping hand.

Hiya, sorry to leave you guys out on the ride, but Crashe informed me I had no headlight so called it an end there. Hope it all went well and that everyone enjoyed themselves.
Discovered my dash wouldnt light up at all - this caused an indicator problem so I didnt know I had left my indicators on (sorry Crashe!)
I got to the lights at an intersection back in Panmure, and the headlight and indicator lights all came back on on the dash. I could have kicked the bike over and walked off I was that annoyed lol.
So my bike is goin into hospital to get repaired tommorow as Im hanging out for a proper ride before Sunday.
See ya all there next week with legwarmers on this time! Im convinced they bring me good luck coz when I dont have them on things go wrong with my bike hehehe:yes:

Great stuff folks, was really good to see lots of new faces again and starting to get some regulars now which is fantastic!
We will be starting to push the limits of those who have been coming each week and have mastered the basics - taking you aside and taking you through into some slightly more challenging stuff, although still keeping within your limits of course!
Those that come for the first time and/or still need more practice can continue with the basics.
Hopefully the carpark is closed off for us again everyweek!! that was great!!
Thanks to all those that gave up their time to teach and everyone for making it a another great teaching session!!
See you all next wednesday!!!

Good effort tonight by both Mentors and Mentees. I enjoyed meeting some new faces.
The mufti cop that passed us on the outside of the KFC roundabout was a bit of a surprise! Did anyone see where he came from?
The guy he got on the Harley was not going fast, we were certainly catching him pretty quickly. In fact I thought he was after me!
I guess the Patch was acting like a cop attractant.
I will see some of you tomorrow for the Thursday ride, and the rest next Wednesday.

General observation from the braking line practice. There were some startling improvements made by a couple of you guys (LTeejay, and the guy on the GN come to mind). Really pushing it and hauling it up just nicely.
Very impressed with the speed of improvement but it tells me you're still in the learning phase - i.e. when you practice you get it right after a couple of goes.
A few more miles etc and guys will be stopping quick and safe every time - the way it should be. But don't rely on it. Good stopping ability does not translate to an entitlement to follow cars closer than previously. Braking in the wet is a different beast to be mastered also.
You need to get to the point of doing it right, first time, on instinct. Get yourself past the "FARRRRK - WADDOIDO" and into the process of find the safest out, brake/manoevre and avoid it.
Those that are getting good on the braking side next to start heading toward the latter

This week CaN has kindly offered his expertise and will be talking to us on the 'theory' side of things. Still going to have lots of practical hands on time, but with some 'classroom time' in the mix too this week! Arnt we lucky!
This is a great oppurtunity folks to really learn some new skills and concepts of riding and even those that have been riding for some time will benifit from being reminded of some of the basics.
Meeting same place - Westgate Shell Petrol Station
And again, if anyone is nervous about riding to venue please dont hesitate to PM me and I will organise a friendly Mentor to escort you there!

Tis a good idea. Something else I would like to suggest for general discussion - put a newbie on the back of a mentor's bike to look at lines etc. It's not a high speed romp, but a quick and practical example of what to do, how it feels etc.

Yes although you would also be fooled by the different machine (bigger bikes may well be smoother and "feel better" generally because of the bigger weight and more power etc.
Going two up on a medium sized machine (400?) might be the answer

Fall over? Possibly. Don't underestimate the strength of the wind. A mate of mine was on the back of my bike and we were carrying a shelf from A to B (scavanging as students do).

Great idea, I have been lucky enough to ride on the back of Qkchk and Vagrant and it was great. Qkchk for a faster ride and Vagrant for last weeks slow ride. I learnt something from each one. It is amazing how smooth it can be.

Don't try it on your back! The wind effect could be nasty. Put it on the footpeg on one side between your leg and the tanbk, then tie/bungy it in place. I've carried large sheets of building material that way

WEDNESDAY 24th-
Venue confirmed:
I have just secured our venue for tomorrows meeting, we will meet at shell westgate as usual then follow me as a group to a tavern up the road where we have our own bar and our own big carpark to practice in for the evening. There is a large outside area with picnic benches next to our carpark so very handy find!
If you need an escort to westgate PM me and I will organise it.
If you are really nervous/far away you are welcome to bring your cage and sit in on the lesson from CaN and others - but then how will you practice on your bike in our special carpark? :innocent:
Food will be available until 8pm and we will have our own bar for refreshments.
This is a great opportunity to learn from the experience of others, and you can never get enough training!
Again if you are attending this please follow this link and subscribe - so I can make sure there is enough seating for everyone. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1131&day=2007-1-24&)

I can't figure out how to register either, perhaps we can have a lesson on driving the website too!
For the record I will be bringing one other with me (if he can get his battery issues sorted in time)
Pillioning would be something good to look at as well, both pillioner and being a pillionee. Its very scary riding a bike with a new pillion on the back, perhaps more so if they mostly ride up front. Their perception of the bikes position and speed can be quite different.
I had a serious crash quite a few years back, caused by my pillion deciding we were turning too hard for the corner, and leaning out to correct it! Needless to say we didn't get round the corner, and destroyed a little old ladies prize roses.:gob:
Broke the bike, broke my foot, just about got killed by said little old lady.
Turns out John had never ever been on the back of a bike. He didn't say, and I didn't ask. I assumed that because he had been riding for a couple of years, he would be fine.
Lesson learnt the hard way.
See you all later tonight.

A good turnout tonight, with a new venue on trial. As per, Dan got lost on the way, even driving a cage with a huge map on a white board. Who were you following again??
Thanks very much to CaN for leading a very informative discussion tonight.
We covered a lot of ground tonight, so don't be afraid to ask if didn't fully understand something we talked about.
Remember, there are no stupid questions! We are here to help, so just ask.
If you want some one on one coaching, or just someone to go riding with, throw one of the Mentors a PM or start a new thread in the events section.
See you out there.

Disco_Dan arrives at the tavern and tells us that he was following this rider there......
Um hello Dan you were the LEADER and supposed to be leading us all there. As you knew the way and wouldnt get LOST.
Poor Disco_Dan managed to loose everyone as well... as he took a very sudden change of direction at the very last minute almost running over a island.

Oh well the rest of us, all had fun riding our own ride...........
Oh for those wondering what was going on with me on Triangle Rd...... and why I was slowing down.......
All of a sudden I had no power...... I was changing gears and all sorts to try and sort it out..... even threw my hands up in the air "WTF".
Figured it out thou...... somehow my kill switch had gotten turned off......
once I turned it back on, I zoomed off again.....
I was a tad worried thou..... as I had just put in new fuel...
That had never happened to me before..... so no idea how it did that.

yeah yeah.... I know.... ....I got confused - got the roads mixed up and panicked... map was upside down and then Noel(?) turned left and I just went with him! Still managed to pull out in front of Crashe and the others in time to show you all where the pub was!
Great turnout folks! I am very pleased with how tonight went! Big thanks to Noel and everyone else for the words of wisdom and giving us all the benifit of your experiences!
I wont speak for Frosty, but when he's back from racing his "pink bits" around the track I will be asking him very nicely if he could show us all a few 'mechanical' tips - to keep our rides in top notch shape!
Will keep shaking this up, trying to keep it fresh and new while still being of benefit to 'real fresh virgin' newbs!
Deathstar, you too chicken too 9 1/2 today?

Was informative indeed. Alot to think about and practice.
I liked your idea of the 'workshop' and mechanical side of the bike albeit even if it is a basic one. Just enough to maybe pick up problems early like worn brake discs or just adjusting the bikes hand lever settings for an easier ride....yeah, that basic.
Little steps....

Noel was leading you along Royal Rd and down that side road onto Triangle Rd
so it was Noel leading US all to the pub, NOT you.
Actually the rest of all knew where the pub was...... and how to get there, without a map.........

A spanner night:yes: I would love to know how my bike works and how to keep it working and fix when needed if within my capabilities...My first oil changed freaked me even though I have done more complex work on cars, only because I know absolutely nothing about bikes except that I LOVE sports bikes no offence to anyone but thats my buzz.SO.....bring on the tools.

Thanks for er, carrying the CaN?
Excellent night, nice to see even the "experienced" visibly having things click.
Can't remember who said it in what book but "The difference between a racing line and road line is that on a track there is a reasonable expectation that there is no-one coming the other way."

Thank you all for the kind comments.
Well, I ain't no racehorse, unless of course it is a Clydesdale race.
As for the food - not a problem at all, I got enough of it stored up to last a fair while.
Tankslapper, hopefully you wont need to know about this for a while, so we can cover that off next time.

You will not EVER encounter a true tankslpper on an FXR150. In fact they are so rare nowdays that not many people have had one. And if you do there's not a lot you can do anyway. You either live. Or you die. Which, is in the capricious hands of the Biker Gods. Forget about them.

Unless... your bike was naughty and threw you off... then you can slap your tank.
SUGGESTIONS FOR NEXT WEEK?
- On a postcard: PO Box Disco Dans Brain.
As discussed last week, we may go for a slow easy ride to Huia.

Practice sessions are one thing, but you can't beat some real world experience... I'd vote for a slowish ride somewheres.

I agree, there is a fair bit to wade thru to catch up on discussions.
Perhaps we can get a new thread started up for 2007?
